Aaron Judge’s very bad October keeps on getting worse

Aaron Judge has been a letdown. There’s no other way to put it.

This is For The Win’s daily newsletter, The Morning Win. Did a friend recommend or forward this to you? If so, subscribe here. Have feedback? Leave your questions, comments and concerns through this brief reader survey! Now, here’s Mike Sykes.

Good morning, Winners! Welcome back to the Morning Win. Thanks so much for rocking with us today. We appreciate you.

You know who probably isn’t having a good morning? Aaron Judge.

His Yankees have all but lost the World Series after falling 3-0 to the Dodgers. This series, which felt like it had the potential to be one of the greats, but has undoubtedly been a complete dude so far outside of Freddie Freeman’s historic Grand Slam to win Game 1.

It’s never over until it’s over, obviously. But this one certainly feels over. That’s mainly because Judge has not played his part in making the Yankees the postseason powerhouse they should be. I don’t mean to sound harsh, but it’s true.

Judge’s batting average is a paltry .140 overall for the postseason. In the World Series so far, he’s a 1 for 12 with seven strikeouts and a walk. It’s been all bad for the likely AL MVP so far in these playoffs — especially in this World Series when the Yankees have desperately needed his bat.

It’s on him. He’s forcing things and chasing pitches out of the zone like he hasn’t done all season long, The Athletic’s Tyler Kepner writes. Judge’s chase rate was only 17.7 percent during the regular season, which meant he rarely swung at pitches out of the zone. That number has risen to 29.7 percent in the postseason. The guy seems to be in his own head right now.

It’s such a shame to see because, barring a miraculous comeback, the book on him will be the guy who couldn’t get it done for the Yankees when they needed it the most. It’ll be unfair because Judge is so much better than that. He’s proven himself as a historically great player. But when you fail at this stage, it tends to stick with you. Just ask Alex Rodriguez.

But he’s not the only great to struggle in the World Series. Plenty of greats have. I mean, just look across from him. Shohei Ohtani’s .091 World Series batting average is just as bad. But he also has Freeman on his side, who will probably be the World Series MVP at this point.

It’s baseball. Things happen. No matter where we go from here, this series shouldn’t be some indictment on Judge and who he is as a player.

But I’d be lying if I said this outcome so far hasn’t been extremely disappointing. Let’s hope it kicks up for however much longer we have to go.

First 50-ball of the season!

Mandatory Credit: Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images

I’m not sure how many of you accurately predicted that Paolo Banchero would be the NBA’s first 50-point scorer of the season, but if you did, I hope you bet on it.

Banchero dropped 50 points (including a 37-point first half!) against the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday, completely dominating the game from start to finish.

The Magic needed every single one of Banchero’s buckets, too. The Magic only won by four points. What Banchero did was necessary.

It was a clinic in bucket-getting. Masterful stuff here from the 21-year-old.

He also played elite defense on the other end.

He looked like a combination of Giannis Anteokounmpo, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony all in one game. That’s a scary combination if you’re the rest of the league.

We’ll see if Paolo can keep this up. Let’s hope he does.

Nick Bosa’s stunt may cost him

Mandatory Credit: Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Nick Bosa drew a lot of attention to himself by wearing a MAGA hat after the 49ers game on Sunday. It seems that some of that attention might be coming from the NFL.

He could possibly face a fine for it, our Charles Curtis writes. It seems to have been in clear violation of the NFL’s rules:

“Rule 5, Section 4, Article 8 of the NFL rulebook says that the entire time a player is ‘visible to the stadium and television audience,’ including during pregame warmups and in postgame interviews both on the field and in the locker room, they are ‘prohibited from wearing, displaying, or otherwise conveying personal messages either in writing or illustration, unless such message has been approved in advance by the League office.’”

Bosa could be fined the same way the league fined George Pickens for putting a message on his eye black. He’s using his attire to convey a personal message to the audience.

Hope it was worth it, Nick!

NICK BOSA’S COWARDICE: Bosa refused to talk about whatever statement he was trying to make with his hat on Sunday.

Who is Aaron Judge’s wife? Meet Samantha Bracksieck.

A look at the pair over the years.

Aaron Judge has fast become one of the best sluggers in all of baseball, and he’s had his wife Samantha Bracksieck by his side during that meteoric rise and even before that.

Turns out, per People, they met in high school in California and then both attended Fresno State University. And they became Instagram official in 2014, as you can see in this link. They then got married in 2021. Since then, we’ve seen the pair pop up in photos here and there, including celebrating the Yanks’ 2024 World Series berth.

Maybe we’ll see them celebrating another kind of ring at some point in 2024.

Aaron Judge finally hit his first Yankees home run of the 2024 MLB postseason

He finally did it!!!

After going cold in the 2024 MLB postseason so far, New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge finally hit an October home run.

In Game 2 of the ALCS on Tuesday night in New York, Judge homered off a pitch from Cleveland Guardians pitcher Hunter Gaddis to widen the Yankees’ 4-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning.

There was a New York runner on base during Judge’s hit, making this a major double for the Yankees.

After such a long wait (considering the talent at hand), MLB fans finally got to see Judge knock one out of the baseball diamond in the 2024 playoffs.

Even Livvy Dunne was stunned Paul Skenes struck out Juan Soto and Aaron Judge back-to-back

Paul Skenes!

Pittsburgh Pirates rookie pitcher Paul Skenes further proved his absolute excellence on the mound on Saturday by striking out two superstars in a row.

During his team’s first inning against the hosting New York Yankees, Skenes impressively struck out Juan Soto and Aaron Judge back-to-back to keep New York from getting on base with two of its best players.

This was just outrageously cool from Skenes. LSU gymnastics star Livvy Dunne, who is dating Skenes, also had the best reaction in the stands to her boyfriend’s stellar sequence in the game.

Skenes’ rookie season has been one for the ages, as moments like this more than prove.

This is the Yankees’ third AL East title in the last six years, but the team has not been to a World Series since 2009.

Aaron Judge is pushing himself from one of baseball’s greats to one of baseball’s immortals

You can debate who the best player in baseball is. But you can’t debate Aaron Judge’s greatness.

I hope you’ve had an excellent weekend.

Aaron Judge certainly did. He hit his 50th and 51st homers of the season on Sunday, extending his homer lead over Shohei Ohtani (41) to ten.

Judge is having an incredible year. The stats tell the tale themselves. At the pace he’s currently at, he’ll probably be the AL’s MVP. His .333 batting average is only second to Bobby Witt (.347). His 1.201 OPS leads the Majors by quite a bit. The next closest player is his teammate, Juan Soto (1.035). Nobody is closing these gaps anytime soon.

At this point, you can’t really compare him to his peers. You can only compare him to himself and the legends before him.

He’s on pace to hit 63 homers this season, according to ESPN, which would break his own AL homerun record at 62. There’s more. With another 50-homer season, Judge is one of five players to hit 50 or more dingers in at least three seasons.

The other four? Babe Ruth, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and Aaron Rodriguez. That’s not just impressive — it’s legendary stuff.

You can make other arguments for the best baseball player this year. Shohei Ohtani’s 40-40 season is historic in its own right. And Bobby Witt is actually ahead of Judge in wins above replacement this season.

But what Judge is doing right now isn’t just about this year. It’s all-time stuff. He’s further cementing himself as one of baseball’s immortals and it’s super fun to watch.

A walk-off…bunt?!?!?

Florida beat Chinese Taipei in the Little League World Series on Sunday 2-1, but they did it in a way you’d never expect.

It was a walk-off BUNT, folks. Not a homer. Not a sac fly. But a bunt! I don’t think I’ve ever seen this at any level of baseball, softball or anything else that has to do with a ball and a bat. This is insane.

Our Mary Clarke with the breakdown:

“With the runner on second thanks to the extra inning, Hunter Alexander put down a bunt in an attempt to move the runner to third. Chinese Taipei fielded it cleanly, but in the ensuing throw to first, no one was covering the base! The error allowed the runner on second to score the winning run, which caused Florida’s bench to erupt in celebration.”

Seeing is believing.

Just a wild play. My heart breaks for Chinese Taipei. I’m also ecstatic for Florida. What a win. What a way to do it.

The ups and downs of the LLWS, folks. I wish all those kids could win. Alas.

The rookies are winning

Mandatory Credit: Brian Fluharty-USA TODAY Sports

The tally of rookie quarterbacks starting for week 1 might be growing soon.

Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo hopped on the local radio station this morning in New England and all but named Drake Maye the team’s starting QB after an impressive performance against the Commanders on Sunday.

“What I will say this is a true competition and I would say, at this current point, Drake has outplayed Jacoby [Brissett]. Now, in saying that, we have to take in the full body of work, going all the way back to the spring and beginning of training camp,” Mayo said.

The official decision on the Patriots’ starting quarterback will come in the next few days. It certainly sounds like Maye here. Brissett’s shoulder injury is a complication that might make the decision a bit easier. But we’ll have to wait and see.

If Maye does get the nod, that would give us four rookie starters for Week 1 so far, including Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels and Bo Nix.

It’s going to be a fun season. Just don’t tell Tom Brady I said that.

MLB fans rip White Sox manager for a dumb intentional walk that led to Aaron Judge’s 300th home run

What are you THINKING, Grady Sizemore?

OK, look: when you’ve got a lineup that has Juan Soto — who is hitting everything right now — followed by Aaron Judge, you have to be very, very afraid.

So you can’t TOTALLY blame Chicago White Sox rookie manager Grady Sizemore on Wednesday, when he intentionally walked Soto to get to Judge, who was sitting on 299 career homers.

But maybe you can, because Judge took a 3-0 pitch and hit it out for home run No. 300. On top of that? Judge said he was motivated by the intentional walk to Soto, so in hindsight, not such a great call by Sizemore.

Here’s the moment, Judge’s talk about the walk and fans reacting:
