Player Prowl: Panthers pick off Falcons CB A.J. Terrell

Falcons CB A.J. Terrell may not be playing against the Panthers tonight, but we’re still glad to highlight him.

For us, the first divisional rematch for the Carolina Panthers means the first double-dip of “Player Prowl.” And for our second shot at (hypothetically) poaching the Atlanta Falcons roster, we’re (with tight end Kyle Pitts already chosen) taking a player we highlighted last year—cornerback A.J. Terrell.

Even though Terrell will be inactive for the second time in this matchup for 2022, he’s more than worthy of our attention. The third-year defensive back has quietly become one of the best players at his position, as he was named an AP Second-team All-Pro (and a Pro Football Focus First-team All-Pro) for his work in 2021.

That campaign saw the former 16th overall pick amass 81 tackles, three interceptions, a sack and a forced fumble. He also, as we reference our pals over at PFF once again, earned the second-highest coverage grade (85.6) for any starting cornerback that season.

Teaming up Terrell with fellow standout youngster Jaycee Horn, along with Donte Jackson still on hand, would give the Panthers and general manager Scott Fitterer a dream duo on the boundaries. So tonight, you may see why Atlanta—who boasts the NFL’s worst pass defense—misses their man.

Previous Player Prowl picks:

  • Week 1 (Cleveland Browns): DE Myles Garrett
  • Week 2 (New York Giants): DE Kayvon Thibodeaux
  • Week 3 (New Orleans Saints): CB Marshon Lattimore
  • Week 4 (Arizona Cardinals): QB Kyler Murray
  • Week 5 (San Francisco 49ers): DE Nick Bosa
  • Week 6 (Los Angeles Rams): DT Aaron Donald
  • Week 7 (Tampa Bay Buccaneers): WR Chris Godwin
  • Week 8 (Atlanta Falcons): TE Kyle Pitts
  • Week 9 (Cincinnati Bengals): QB Joe Burrow

Falcons vs. Chargers: Final injury reports for Week 9 matchup

Injury report: Chargers rule out WRs Mike Williams and Keenan Allen, Falcons without CB A.J. Terrell for Week 9 matchup

The Atlanta Falcons (4-4) will look to stay atop the NFC South when they host the Los Angeles Chargers (4-3) in Week 9. Considering the injuries each team is dealing with, the matchup to watch is the Falcons’ secondary against the Chargers’ wide receivers.

Since Atlanta has ruled out cornerback A.J. Terrell and Los Angeles will be without receivers Mike Williams and Keenan Allen, we’ll see whose backups come to play during Sunday’s game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Check out each team’s full Week 9 injury report with game designations below.

Falcons rule out two starters for Sunday’s game vs. Chargers

The Falcons have ruled out CB A.J. Terrell and LG Elijah Wilkinson for Sunday’s game against the Chargers.

The Atlanta Falcons will be without two starters when they take on the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 9. On Friday, the team ruled out cornerback A.J. Terrell and left guard Elijah Wilkinson, both of whom missed all three days of practice this week.

Terrell will miss his second game in a row with a hamstring injury. In his absence, the Falcons could look to CB Rashad Fenton, who was acquired from Kansas City in a trade at the deadline.

As for Wilkinson, he’s been battling a knee for some time. Backup center Matt Hennessy has been filling in all week at left guard, so look for him to get the start on Sunday.

Cordarrelle Patterson has been designated to return, but the Falcons will wait until Saturday to decide if they should activate him for Week 9. Check back for the full Friday injury report following today’s practice.

Falcons CB A.J. Terrell misses 2nd practice in a row

#Falcons CB A.J. Terrell and LG Elijah Wilkinson missed their second straight practice on Thursday

The Atlanta Falcons defeated the Carolina Panthers in Week 8 to stay atop the NFC South, and they did so without two of their best players. But while RB Cordarrelle Patterson is on the verge of returning from the injured reserve list, things are less clear regarding the status of CB A.J. Terrell.

On Thursday, Terrell missed his second practice in a row due to a severe hamstring injury. Starting left guard Elijah Wilkinson was also out for the second straight day recovering from a knee injury.

Safety Jaylinnn Hawkins, who missed Week 8 due to a concussion, has practiced in full the past two days. Check out Atlanta’s full Thursday injury report below.

Falcons vs. Panthers: Final Week 8 injury report

The Falcons have ruled out A.J. Terrell for Sunday’s game against the Panthers after the cornerback missed all 3 days of practice.

The Atlanta Falcons (3-4) and Carolina Panthers (2-5) will face off on Sunday, and for the first time all year, the Falcons are favored to win.

Atlanta was blown out by Cincinnati in Week 7, while the Panthers shocked the NFL world by upsetting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers just a few days after trading away running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receiver Robbie Anderson.

The two teams released their final injury reports on Friday and each has ruled out a key player. The Falcons will be without A.J. Terrell after the cornerback missed all three days of practice. On the other side, the Panthers have ruled out running back Chuba Hubbard for Sunday’s matchup.

Check out the full Week 8 injury report for each team below.

Falcons CB A.J. Terrell OUT Wednesday, Dee Alford to return

Falcons CB A.J. Terrell is OUT Wednesday, but DB Dee Alford will make his return.

The Atlanta Falcons will practice on Wednesday without starting cornerback A.J. Terrell, head coach Arthur Smith announced earlier this afternoon. In Week 7, Terrell attempted to play through a thigh injury but left the game in the first quarter and did not return.

On the flip side, cornerback Dee Alford, who was held out of last Sunday’s loss to the Bengals, will return to the practice field Wednesday, per team reporter Tori McElhaney.

The Falcons could be in some trouble if Terrell isn’t able to play this week since the team is already without starting CB Casey Hayward (injured reserve) and safety Jaylinn Hawkins (concussion protocol).

Stay tuned for Atlanta’s full injury report following Wednesday’s practice.

Falcons coach says CB A.J. Terrell is ‘week-to-week’

Falcons CB A.J. Terrell is considered “week-to-week” and S Jaylinn Hawkins has been ruled out for Week 8.

The Atlanta Falcons lost two starting members of their secondary during Sunday’s 35-17 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Cornerback A.J. Terrell left the game in the first quarter due to a hamstring injury, and safety Jaylinn Hawkins suffered a concussion in the second half.

Falcons head coach Arthur Smith gave some updates on his banged-up secondary on Monday afternoon. Terrell is considered “week-to-week” and Hawkins has been ruled out for Week 8 as he enters the concussion protocol, per team reporter Tori McElhaney.

Atlanta played without both Casey Hayward and Dee Alford during Week 7, but it sounds like Alford is close to returning. Hayward is required to miss at least three more games since he was placed on injured reserve last week.

The Falcons defense got torched by the Bengals on Sunday, allowing 481 passing yards to Joe Burrow. On the offensive side, Atlanta passed for just 124 yards. Fans are getting frustrated with starting QB Marcus Mariota, and some are calling for rookie Desmond Ridder to step in.

Things aren’t going much better for Matt Ryan in Indianapolis, though. The Colts benched Ryan for the remainder of the season on Monday.
