How much will A.J. Terrell’s 5th-year option cost the Falcons?

How much would it cost the #Falcons to pick up A.J. Terrell’s fifth-year option in 2024?

On Friday, the Miami Dolphins made Tua Tagovalioa the first player of the 2020 NFL draft class to have his fifth-year option picked up. The Atlanta Falcons must make a similar decision regarding cornerback A.J. Terrell by the NFL’s deadline on May 1.

Terrell, who was drafted with the 16th overall pick back in 2020, has become one of the team’s most reliable defensive players. The Falcons will almost certainly pick up his option, but how much will that cost?

Fifth-year options are broken into four categories: basic, playtime, one Pro Bowl and multiple Pro Bowls. Each player’s salary is dependent on which category he falls into.

As for Terrell, he falls into the “playtime” category because he doesn’t have any Pro Bowl selections. This means his option would cost the team $12.34 million in 2024 — a very digestible number for a player of Terrell’s caliber.

Last offseason, the Falcons chose to exercise right guard Chris Lindstrom’s fifth-year option, while passing on right tackle Kaleb McGary. Atlanta could have used the franchise tag on McGary, who had a solid season in 2022, but the team will let him test free agency instead.

Falcons CB A.J. Terrell questionable for Sunday’s game vs. Bears

The #Falcons have listed CB A.J. Terrell as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears. TE Feleipe Franks is OUT

The Atlanta Falcons are allowing over 280 passing yards per game, but cornerback A.J. Terrell’s potential return could help change that in Week 11.

Terrell was limited during all three days of practice and the Falcons have listed him as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears. Safety Erik Harris is also questionable for Week 11, and tight end Feleipe Franks has been ruled out.

Falcons offensive lineman Colby Gossett returned to practice on Friday and is good to go for Sunday. Check out the team’s final Week 11 injury report below.

Falcons are hopeful CB A.J. Terrell will return this week

Arthur Smith said the #Falcons are hopeful CB A.J. Terrell (hamstring) will return to practice this week

On Monday, Falcons fans finally got an answer regarding the quarterback situation in Atlanta. Head coach Arthur Smith said Marcus Mariota will remain the starter going forward despite his recent struggles.

While several media members and fans alike have suggested the team should give rookie QB Desmond Ridder a look, Smith said he feels good about where the Falcons are at since the playoffs are still within reach.

That wasn’t the only news of the day, though. Smith said cornerback A.J. Terrell will “hopefully” make his return to practice this week, per team reporter Tori McElhaney.

When healthy, Terrell is considered one of the NFL’s best young cornerbacks, but 2022 just hasn’t been his year. The former first-round pick has missed three consecutive games since severely injuring his hamstring in the first quarter of Atlanta’s Week 7 loss to Cincinnati.

Injuries have hindered this Falcons secondary all season. Casey Hayward signed as a free agent over the offseason, but the former Pro Bowler has been on injured reserve since suffering a shoulder injury during Week 6.

The Falcons are allowing an NFL-worst 280.1 passing yards per game this season. If Terrell returns, it will take some pressure off of Darren Hall and the rest of the team’s secondary.

Player Prowl: Panthers pick off Falcons CB A.J. Terrell

Falcons CB A.J. Terrell may not be playing against the Panthers tonight, but we’re still glad to highlight him.

For us, the first divisional rematch for the Carolina Panthers means the first double-dip of “Player Prowl.” And for our second shot at (hypothetically) poaching the Atlanta Falcons roster, we’re (with tight end Kyle Pitts already chosen) taking a player we highlighted last year—cornerback A.J. Terrell.

Even though Terrell will be inactive for the second time in this matchup for 2022, he’s more than worthy of our attention. The third-year defensive back has quietly become one of the best players at his position, as he was named an AP Second-team All-Pro (and a Pro Football Focus First-team All-Pro) for his work in 2021.

That campaign saw the former 16th overall pick amass 81 tackles, three interceptions, a sack and a forced fumble. He also, as we reference our pals over at PFF once again, earned the second-highest coverage grade (85.6) for any starting cornerback that season.

Teaming up Terrell with fellow standout youngster Jaycee Horn, along with Donte Jackson still on hand, would give the Panthers and general manager Scott Fitterer a dream duo on the boundaries. So tonight, you may see why Atlanta—who boasts the NFL’s worst pass defense—misses their man.

Previous Player Prowl picks:

  • Week 1 (Cleveland Browns): DE Myles Garrett
  • Week 2 (New York Giants): DE Kayvon Thibodeaux
  • Week 3 (New Orleans Saints): CB Marshon Lattimore
  • Week 4 (Arizona Cardinals): QB Kyler Murray
  • Week 5 (San Francisco 49ers): DE Nick Bosa
  • Week 6 (Los Angeles Rams): DT Aaron Donald
  • Week 7 (Tampa Bay Buccaneers): WR Chris Godwin
  • Week 8 (Atlanta Falcons): TE Kyle Pitts
  • Week 9 (Cincinnati Bengals): QB Joe Burrow

Falcons vs. Chargers: Final injury reports for Week 9 matchup

Injury report: Chargers rule out WRs Mike Williams and Keenan Allen, Falcons without CB A.J. Terrell for Week 9 matchup

The Atlanta Falcons (4-4) will look to stay atop the NFC South when they host the Los Angeles Chargers (4-3) in Week 9. Considering the injuries each team is dealing with, the matchup to watch is the Falcons’ secondary against the Chargers’ wide receivers.

Since Atlanta has ruled out cornerback A.J. Terrell and Los Angeles will be without receivers Mike Williams and Keenan Allen, we’ll see whose backups come to play during Sunday’s game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Check out each team’s full Week 9 injury report with game designations below.

Falcons rule out two starters for Sunday’s game vs. Chargers

The Falcons have ruled out CB A.J. Terrell and LG Elijah Wilkinson for Sunday’s game against the Chargers.

The Atlanta Falcons will be without two starters when they take on the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 9. On Friday, the team ruled out cornerback A.J. Terrell and left guard Elijah Wilkinson, both of whom missed all three days of practice this week.

Terrell will miss his second game in a row with a hamstring injury. In his absence, the Falcons could look to CB Rashad Fenton, who was acquired from Kansas City in a trade at the deadline.

As for Wilkinson, he’s been battling a knee for some time. Backup center Matt Hennessy has been filling in all week at left guard, so look for him to get the start on Sunday.

Cordarrelle Patterson has been designated to return, but the Falcons will wait until Saturday to decide if they should activate him for Week 9. Check back for the full Friday injury report following today’s practice.

Falcons CB A.J. Terrell misses 2nd practice in a row

#Falcons CB A.J. Terrell and LG Elijah Wilkinson missed their second straight practice on Thursday

The Atlanta Falcons defeated the Carolina Panthers in Week 8 to stay atop the NFC South, and they did so without two of their best players. But while RB Cordarrelle Patterson is on the verge of returning from the injured reserve list, things are less clear regarding the status of CB A.J. Terrell.

On Thursday, Terrell missed his second practice in a row due to a severe hamstring injury. Starting left guard Elijah Wilkinson was also out for the second straight day recovering from a knee injury.

Safety Jaylinnn Hawkins, who missed Week 8 due to a concussion, has practiced in full the past two days. Check out Atlanta’s full Thursday injury report below.
