Russell Wilson said he understood Mike Zimmer’s decision to go for it

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson appeared on Bill Simmons’ podcast to discuss Mike Zimmer’s decision to go for it in Week 5.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson appeared on Bill Simmons’ podcast and talked about the team’s Week 5 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. Specifically, he delved into Minnesota’s decision to go for it on 4th-and-inches in the red zone that ultimately got Seattle the ball back.

Wilson said he understood coach Mike Zimmer’s decision because of the position the Vikings were in at the time.

“It’s raining, and if they miss (the field goal), they’re in trouble,” Wilson said. “But also, if they get it there, they obviously get the first (down). I think the move by the coaches is honestly a sign of respect, them just saying, ‘Hey, listen, we got to end this game.’”

Fortunately for Seattle, Minnesota’s gamble did not pay off and the Seahawks were able to capitalize with one of the most memorable game-winning drives in recent history to move to 5-0. They are now on their well-deserved bye week and will play the Cardinals in Week 7 barring any postponements.

Pete Carroll praises Seahawks involved in 4th-and-inches stop

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll praised the play that set up the team’s final drive, the red zone stop on 4th-and-inches Week 5.

Following the Seahawks’ improbable Week 5 victory over the Minnesota Vikings, coach Pete Carroll talked about the play that set up the Seahawks’ unforgettable final drive, the red zone stop on 4th-and-inches.

This defense has a tendency to make crucial plays with the game on the line regardless of prior struggles. Carroll praised them for doing just that with that play.

“It was awesome. A freaking great moment in the game and a great moment in football when you can stop somebody,” Carroll said in his Monday press conference. “And the whole game relies on that foot and a half that they’ve got to make, so we’re going crazy because we know we have a chance to win the game right there.”

On the play, Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins handed off to running back Alexander Mattison. Seahawks linebacker Cody Barton pushed the RB’s lead blocker back, and a split second later, Bobby Wagner and Benson Mayowa crashed down on Mattison short of the line of scrimmage for the turnover on downs.

“Our guys kicked down in there and were ready for the sneak and both linebackers – Cody made a great scrape to turn the ball to Bobby – and a phenomenal job by Benson Mayowa when you really dig in to what he had to do and throw his body at that play and made it happen,” Carroll said.

The Seahawks found the perfect way to enter their well-deserved bye week at 5-0 atop the NFC. They will play the  Cardinals on the road in Week 7.

Seahawks advance to 5-0 start for 1st time in franchise history

After beating the Minnesota Vikings Sunday night, the Seattle Seahawks have advanced to a 5-0 start for the first time in franchise history.

The Seattle Seahawks notched another one for the history books Sunday night when they beat the Minnesota Vikings 27-26 to advance to a 5-0 start to the season for the first time in franchise history.

Seattle was shut out 13-0 by Minnesota in the first half but rallied for the win on the national stage. Quarterback Russell Wilson and the Seahawks offense put on a magic show in the final minutes of the game to win it all with just seconds left on the clock.

“We just believed that if we got the ball back, something great was going to happen and we just said that on the sideline – stay neutral, and keep believing,” Wilson told NBC’s Michele Tafoya after the win. “We made a crucial catch by D.K. on fourth down, what an unbelievable catch. We went up and down the field there, and we had a couple chances to score early on, but it actually worked out better that we scored on the last play there on fourth down.

“It’s always a heavyweight fight.”

The Seahawks now enter their bye next week undefeated and have earned themselves some much-needed rest and relaxation after the victory.
