Watch: 49ers waste no time striking first vs. Seahawks with Jordan Mason TD

The 49ers wasted no time getting started against the Seahawks on Sunday.

The San Francisco 49ers wasted no time striking first against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday afternoon in Santa Clara. Within the first minute of action. Jordan Mason punched in a short touchdown to give the 49ers an early 7-0 advantage.

Via @49ers on Twitter:

Mason’s touchdown was set up by a long run from Christian McCaffrey to start the game. On the first play from scrimmage, McCaffrey blitzed by the Seahawks defense for a 72-yard run.

49ers inactives: RB Elijah Mitchell, RG Spencer Burford officially ruled out vs. Seahawks

The #49ers are pretty banged up for Sunday’s game. Here are the inactives:

The injury bug caught up with the 49ers heading into their Week 14 matchup with the Seattle Seahawks. Of their seven inactive players,  five are out because of injury.

Here’s who won’t suit up for San Francisco:

QB Brandon Allen (QB3)
DL Robert Beal Jr.
DL Arik Armstead (knee, foot)
TE Ross Dwelley (ankle)
RB Elijah Mitchell (knee)
CB Darrell Luter Jr. (hamstring)
OL Spencer Burford (knee)

Mitchell and Burford were both considered doubtful going into Sunday and now they’ve been officially ruled out.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan originally indicated Mitchell was dealing with some knee soreness, but his absence all week in practice and during Sunday’s game are a sign there may be more than general soreness. There’s been no official diagnosis for the RB.

Burford was a little banged up going into Week 13, but played through it. Now he’s dealing with a different knee injury that will keep him out this week.

Seahawks QB Geno Smith questionable vs. 49ers

The #49ers may not face the Seahawks’ starting QB on Sunday.

The 49ers may not face the Seahawks’ starting quarterback Sunday at Levi’s Stadium. QB Geno Smith was a full go in practice until Friday when he showed up as a non-participant with a groin injury. Seattle is listing him as questionable for Sunday.

If Smith can’t go it would likely be backup QB Drew Lock starting in his place. Lock was acquired by the Seahawks from the Broncos in the deal that sent QB Russell Wilson to Denver.

Lock lost a QB battle last offseason to Smith and didn’t play last season. This year in two games he’s completed 4-of-12 throws for 66 yards and an interception. Sunday would mark his first start in a Seahawks uniform.

Smith isn’t the only player on the injury report. Seattle is also listing linebacker Jordyn Brooks (ankle), cornerback Tre Brown (heel), running backs Zach Charbonnet (knee) and Kenneth Walker (oblique), wide receiver D’Wayne Eskridge (ribs) and defensive tackle Jarran Reed (hamstring) as questionable.

Good and bad from 49ers Thanksgiving win over Seahawks

There’s a lot of good and not much bad from the #49ers win in Seattle.

Almost everything went the 49ers way on Thanksgiving when they visited the Seahawks in Seattle.

San Francisco jumped out to a 7-0 lead on its first drive and never looked back en route to a 31-13 win and their second-largest margin of victory ever in the Pacific Northwest.

We went back through Thursday night’s game to find the good and bad from a terrific 49ers performance.

Seahawks game plan to draw penalties vs. 49ers didn’t work

Seattle had a game plan to attack the #49ers secondary down the field. It did not work.

The Seahawks had a plan Thursday night against the 49ers at Lumen Field. They were going to attack their defensive backs deep down the field, and they did so to the tune of five deep shots throughout the game. It turns out their goal was to draw flags. It did not work.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll on Friday hopped on Seattle Sports 710 AM and said the increased depth of target for quarterback Geno Smith was an attempt to take advantage of a flag-happy 49ers secondary.

Brady Henderson, who covers the Seahawks for ESPN, posted on Twitter about Carroll’s appearance:

This plan didn’t work for a couple reasons.

First, the 49ers were only flagged once on defense. It was a hold on safety Tashaun Gipson that was offset by a Seahawks penalty.

Second, Smith completed only one of his five throws more than 20 yards downfield. That lone completion was the remarkable one-handed snag by rookie wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

San Francisco’s secondary was exploitable for a couple weeks and the Seahawks tried taking advantage of that, but that unit has tightened up since the bye and there may not be a better illustration of that than Seattle’s failed Thanksgiving game plan.

Ambry Thomas has another excellent outing vs. Seahawks

Ambry Thomas’ numbers the last three weeks since he joined the #49ers starting lineup have been outstanding.

Cornerback Ambry Thomas continues to be a revelation for the 49ers’ secondary, and his insertion into the starting lineup after the bye week has been perhaps the biggest key to San Francisco’s defense getting back on track.

The addition of defensive end Chase Young has undoubtedly helped as well, but it’s hard to argue with Thomas’ production since Week 10 in Jacksonville.

In that game against the Jaguars he allowed two catches for 14 yards on three targets. The following week vs. the Buccaneers he gave up three catches for 16 yards and a touchdown on five targets.

His string of good performances continued Thursday night against Seattle where he allowed two catches for 16 yards and hauled in an interception on four targets.

In those three games Thomas has been targeted 12 times. He’s given up seven catches for 46 yards and a touchdown. He also snagged an interception. Quarterbacks have a dreadful 59.7 passer rating when throwing his way per Pro Football Focus.

This isn’t the first time Thomas had a stretch of good play. He was very good to close his rookie year in 2021 as well. This time though his play has coincided with the 49ers defense playing as well as it has all season. It’s also been a key factor in the team getting right after some defensive struggles in the middle of the schedule.

Perhaps he comes back down to Earth at some point, but if Thomas keeps playing like this there aren’t many weaknesses in the 49ers defense.

6 takeaways from 49ers thumping of Seahawks on Thanksgiving

The 49ers pounded the Seahawks 31-13 on Thanksgiving. Here are some takeaways:

The 49ers are the best team in the NFC West and it showed Thursday night in Seattle. San Francisco dismantled the Seahawks 31-13 at Lumen Field and got themselves back to a two-game lead in the NFC West.

Here are our six quick takeaways from Thursday’s game:

This Brock Purdy TD throw to Brandon Aiyuk is a DIME

This throw from Brock Purdy to put the Seahawks away was awesome.

The 49ers were on their way to a win over the Seahawks midway through the fourth quarter Thursday night. They led 24-13 and were driving. Then Brock Purdy slammed the door.

On a second-and-7, Purdy dropped to throw, flipped his hips, and as pressure closed in he uncorked a beautiful pass to wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk between four Seahawks defenders.

To make it even more impressive, he hit Aiyuk in stride and allowed the receiver to split two Seattle defensive backs to find the end zone.

It was only Aiyuk’s second catch of the night, but the TD put the nail in Seattle’s coffin.

On a night where Purdy wasn’t his best, he stepped up and made an excellent throw in a huge spot and helped put an important division game away.

WATCH: 49ers chow turkey on Seahawks home field

Hey #49ers fans — wanna see your dudes eating turkey on the Seahawks home field? Happy Thanksgiving!

The 49ers dominated Thursday night in Seattle and wrapped up their Thanksgiving with a feast on the home field of their biggest division rival.

For 49ers fans who were around in 2014 when Richard Sherman and Russell Wilson buried the 49ers and ate turkey on the 50-yard-line at Levi’s Stadium, the moment surely provided some catharsis.

This time it was their team’s stars standing around after a thorough thumping of the team just behind them in the NFC West.

The Seahawks-49ers rivalry went dormant for awhile while San Francisco struggled through various rebuilds. It’s a thing again now though, and the image of the 49ers eating a Thanksgiving meal at Lumen Field will be the new image that represents the superior team in the division.

49ers injury update: George Odum suffers possible season-ending biceps injury vs. Seahawks

It sounds like 49ers S George Odum could be out for the season.

The injury list from the 49ers win over the Seahawks on Thursday wasn’t long, but it sounds like safety George Odum suffered a significant biceps injury.

Odum was quickly ruled out of Thursday’s game after getting hurt covering a punt. Head coach Kyle Shanahan in his postgame press conference said Odum most likely tore his biceps, which would likely be a season-ending injury.

This is the second blow to the 49ers’ secondary in as many weeks. Talanoa Hufanga is already on IR with an ACL tear. Now Odum’s season could be done, leaving San Francisco with only veteran Tashaun Gipson and rookie Ji’Ayir Brown in its safety room.

Shanahan also said tight end Charlie Woerner was evaluated for a concussion and cleared.
