How 49ers adjusted defensive scheme after loss of star DL

An interesting defensive adjustment helped the 49ers win on Sunday.

It seemed inevitable the San Francisco 49ers were going to need to try something different schematically given how the first three weeks went.

The 49ers in those games were dreadful on third downs and allowing the third-most yards per play in the NFL. It was a far cry from the dominant efforts we’ve grown accustomed to seeing from San Francisco’s defenses.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated some schematic changes may be necessary, especially once defensive tackle Javon Hargrave went down and dramatically altered the strength of the 49ers’ pass rush on the defensive front.

One of those schematic changes popped up in Sunday’s win over the Patriots when the 49ers started blitzing heavily.

Per ESPN Research, the 49ers blitzed on only 14 percent of opposing quarterback dropbacks through the first three weeks. That number skyrocketed to 33 percent against the Patriots and quarterback Jacoby Brissett on Sunday.

In an ideal world the 49ers won’t need to throw as many blitzes at a QB to get pressure on them. However, the NFL is about adapting and San Francisco’s personnel dictates something has to be done differently with its defense.

Perhaps the blitzing sticks and they become a more blitz-heavy team. Perhaps they do something a little different each week where we see new wrinkles to the way they attack opposing offenses.

Whatever they did Sunday worked like a charm, though. The Patriots went at a paltry 3.5 yards per play and their lone touchdown came off a 49ers fumble that placed them at San Francisco’s 27 to start the drive.

So far, so good on the schematic adjustments on defense. Now they need to find the right button to push against a much better Arizona Cardinals offense in Week 5.

49ers get 1st touchdown vs. Patriots from unlikely place

Run Fred Warner his DPOY.

The NFL might want to start making the Defensive Player of the Year trophy for San Francisco 49ers linebacker Fred Warner.

He’s up to three forced fumbles and two interceptions this season after snagging an interception off of Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett.

What made the play so remarkable is that Warner not only had the athleticism to get up and make the interception, but he had the athleticism to get up and follow a couple of blocks into the end zone for the 49ers’ first touchdown of the game vs. New England.

It put the 49ers ahead 13-0 and gave a much-needed spark to a defense that had been struggling.

49ers rookie RB draws comparison to former 49ers playoff hero

Are the 49ers about to develop the new Raheem Mostert?!

San Francisco 49ers rookie running back Isaac Guerendo finally got some real NFL work in his third regular season game.

After getting one carry for no yards in Week 2, Guerendo had five carries for 19 yards in Week 3 against the Los Angeles Rams. He had another five-yard carry called back for holding.

While his numbers were pedestrian, 49ers offensive line coach and run game coordinator Chris Foerster said Guerendo nearly ripped off a long touchdown run.

“Loved him. Loved him,” Foerster said in a press conference Thursday. “We had, oh man, if you guys watched the all 22, if you saw the play, [LG Aaron] Banks went up to get a linebacker and kind of didn’t go right at him, he kind of slipped and fell on his butt and, but it was right about on the 50. That’s a good feeling, right on the emblem. He fell backwards and missed the linebacker on that play. If he’d have got on that guy, there was a crease that he, I would’ve loved to see if he would’ve hit it. If he just could have, I thought he might have split the safety.”

The home run run plays have been missing from the 49ers’ offense so far this season. That one evaded Guerendo on Sunday, but Foerster’s comparison for the rookie fourth-round pick from Louisville indicates he could be seeing more time in the backfield soon.

“He reminds me of another 31 [Miami Dolphins RB Raheem Mostert] we had here in his running style,” Foerster said. “He’s got that upright, good-speed running style. And I’m not putting him in that category yet, but he really does. I want to see him get a chance to get, we just haven’t gotten him the space yet. I like him. He’s got a ways to go, obviously. He’s got a lot of developing to do. And that position is a hard, tough position. But he’s nothing but a positive upside. He really looks to be that, I won’t say change of pace. Shoot, he could be your lead dog, but he’s got that little, that extra gear we’ve been looking for in a change between, Christian’s playing fast, JP’s playing fast, but he’s got a little bit something different from those guys.”

Mostert worked largely in a reserve role until 2019 when he broke out late in the year and sent the 49ers to the Super Bowl with a 29-carry, 220-yard, four-touchdown performance in the NFC championship game. His specialty with the 49ers was the explosive run play where every touch was liable to go to the end zone.

It would be a huge boost for the 49ers offense if Guerendo starts executing those big run plays the way Mostert did. Starting RB Jordan Mason’s longest carry of the season is just 24 yards. Having a threat in the run game who can flip the field or score a long touchdown on the ground would make life easier on the 49ers’ offense. And if Guerendo turns into Mostert, they need to start getting him the ball more often.

49ers rising star QB off to best statistical start to career in team history

Brock Purdy’s numbers through his first 25 starts are going to be absurd.

It’s tough to get off to a better start than San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has in his career.

In fact, it’s so hard that no other QB in the 49ers’ storied history of quarterbacks has been as good as Purdy has. He has a chance to set a slew of benchmarks for San Francisco signal callers in his 25th start Sunday against the New England Patriots.

Purdy didn’t even need a 25th start to set new high watermarks in several statistical categories. He’s at a 69.7 percent completion rate, 46 touchdowns and a 113.6 passer rating through 24 games. Those numbers are all highs through 25 games and Purdy hasn’t even started his 25th game yet.

If he throws for at least 278 yards Sunday he’ll have the most passing yards by a 49ers QB through his first 25 starts as well. That’s made even more impressive by the fact he needs 15 completions to reach the No. 3 spot in completions over that stretch. First in yards, third in completions would be a nice summary of the efficiency that has helped define Purdy in the early portion of his career.

This start for Purdy is why the 49ers are ultimately going to give him a massive long-term extension this offseason. How he grows through his next 25 starts will determine just how far San Francisco can go with him under center. If his numbers look like they did in his first 25 starts, they should be good for a long time.

Brandon Aiyuk breakout unlikely to come vs. Patriots lockdown CB

The Brandon Aiyuk breakout game is coming … just not this week … probably.

The long-awaited breakout game for San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk may not be coming in Week 4 when the 49ers host the New England Patriots and star cornerback Christian Gonzalez.

Aiyuk through three games has just 11 catches for 119 yards on 20 targets. He’s still looking for his first touchdown in 2024. For comparison, he was at 17 receptions, 320 yards and two touchdowns through his first three games last season.

There’s an understandable frustration bubbling up from fans after Aiyuk missed all of training camp and the preseason before agreeing to a four-year, $120 million contract on Aug. 29. His absence from camp is being blamed for his paltry production and two drops through three games (he had two drops all of last season).

It stands to reason there’s a breakout coming for the 2023 All-Pro eventually. Aiyuk is getting separation, there’s clearly a little rust with him and quarterback Brock Purdy still and the entire 49ers’ offense is still settling in without running back Christian McCaffrey.

On the other hand, it’s nigh impossible to expect Aiyuk’s first big performance of the season to come against Gonzalez, who has been sensational through the Patriots’ first three games.

In Week 1 he matched up with Cincinnati Bengals’ superstar WR Ja’Marr Chase. He held Chase to just 15 yards and three catches on three targets.

In Week 2 he drew Seattle Seahawks WR DK Metcalf. Gonzalez notched one pass breakup and held Metcalf to four catches and 27 yards on seven targets.

Last week it was New York Jets WR Garrett Wilson who did log a touchdown against Gonzalez per Pro Football Focus. The TD was the highlight of a nine-target, five-catch, 33-yard day for Wilson against the second-year CB.

That trio of receivers combined for 19 targets, 12 receptions, 75 yards and one touchdown when matched up against Gonzalez. He held quarterbacks to a passer rating of 88.7 when targeting Chase, Metcalf and Wilson.

Chances are Aiyuk will draw Gonzalez more often than not when the Patriots visit Levi’s Stadium on Sunday, especially with WR Deebo Samuel still out. Perhaps Gonzalez matches up with WR Jauan Jennings instead after Jennings’ monster outing against the Rams in Week 3. In that event we may see a big-time day for Aiyuk. If it’s Gonzalez on Aiyuk though, it may be a fourth consecutive quiet day for San Francisco’s superstar receiver.

Tom Brady retires with 2-1 record vs. 49ers

Tom Brady retired with a 2-1 record vs. the #49ers. A look back at the 3 matchups:

Tom Brady on Tuesday announced his retirement from the NFL. The Bay Area native will hang up his pads with a 2-1 record against the 49ers – the team he grew up rooting for.

Despite the 49ers appearing in two Super Bowls during Brady’s career, and the QB appearing in 10, they never managed to meet up on the NFL’s biggest stage.

In 2011 when the 49ers appeared in the NFC championship game for the first time since Brady entered the league, they fell to the Giants who went on to knock off Brady’s Patriots in the Super Bowl.

In 2012 San Francisco finally got over the hump, but this time Brady and the Patriots lost to the Ravens.

In 2013 both teams lost in the conference championship.

By the time the 49ers went back to the playoffs in 2019 and made another run to the Super Bowl, Brady’s time in New England was coming to a close and the struggling Patriots lost at home to the Titans in the wild-card round.

While the perfect postseason picture never materialized in the Brady-49ers matchup, San Francisco and New England met three times in the regular season while Brady was there and healthy. Let’s look back at those three contests.

Observations from throughout 49ers 33-6 win over Patriots

The 49ers were all over the Patriots from the jump on Sunday.

The 49ers were excellent Sunday in a rout of the Patriots in New England.

Here are our notes from throughout a thorough 49ers victory:

– Jeff Wilson Jr. started at running back.

– Third down for the 49ers and Jimmy Garoppolo broke a couple of tackles and dove across the first down marker. The 49ers have to love seeing that from the quarterback.

– Deebo Samuel’s first touch is a swing pass off the action the 49ers used as a sweep for Samuel last week. That was a nice design.

– Touchdown! Wilson plows in from three yards out for the score. Good blocking from Kyle Juszczyk and Daniel Brunskill helped open that hole. It’s the first time in 32 home games for the Patriots that they allowed an opening drive touchdown. 49ers 7, Patriots 0

– Jason Verrett briefly left the game, but he only missed one play. It looked like he might’ve gotten the wind knocked out of him.

– Backup free safety Tarvarius Moore flew up to make a nice play to end the Patriots’ first series. That was a great set of downs by the 49ers defense, especially in coverage.

– Ross Dwelley got blown up bad on a run play that lost two yards to open the 49ers’ second series.

– Third-and-11 and George Kittle beats reigning Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore for 14. The Patriots have done a great job on opposing TEs this year, but Kittle is cooking early.

– Second-and-17 after a sack, no problem. Garoppolo finds Aiyuk who broke a couple tackles to get the extra couple yards for a gain of 19 and a first down.

– Oof. A bad Garoppolo miss leads to an interception. He airmailed a throw for Kittle and it went directly to Patriots safety Devin McCourty. That’s the quarterback’s first incompletion.

– A nice hit by Tarvarius Moore gets another third-down stop for the 49ers. He’s playing really well so far.

END OF FIRST QUARTER: 49ers 7, Patriots 0

– The first play of the second quarter is a 40-yard field goal by Patriots kicker Nick Folk. 49ers 7, Patriots 3

– Back-to-back runs of 13 and 9 yards for Wilson. Good burst from him after some tough sledding early.

– The 49ers are gashing the Patriots on the ground right now. Wilson is getting multiple yards upfield before he’s first touched.

– Jet sweep to Aiyuk behind a great block from Juszczyk. There are so many good playmakers on this offense.

– There’ve been two tosses to Samuel as a running back. That’s one way to make up for Raheem Mostert’s injury. The gain was called back by a hold on Trent Williams.

– Third-and-13 and Garoppolo misses Kendrick Bourne. There was pressure coming everywhere. That throw still needs to be complete, although it probably wouldn’t have gone for a first down.

– Robbie Gould drills a 41-yard field goal after the incompletion. He’s been good this season. 49ers 10, Patriots, 3

– Wow. Fred Warner’s second interception of the year comes on a terrible throw by Cam Newton. It was the first play of the Patriots’ third series and Newton tried to jam a throw into his receiver, but it left it short where Warner could reach down and snag it. Heck of a catch by the linebacker who now leads the club in interceptions.

– Touchdown! Kyle Juszczyk gets his first score of the season on a four-yard plunge into the end zone. Robbie Gould’s extra point was blocked and banged off the upright and out. 49ers 16, Patriots 3

– Newton looks terrible.

– Another holding call on the 49ers — their third of the game. One on each tackle and one on George Kittle. They have to clean that up. Starting in first-and-20 isn’t great for this offense.

– A JaMycal Hasty sighting. He goes 16 yards on a little swing pass and did well to tiptoe the sideline and finish the run hard. Then he follows that with a 20-yard dash.

– Touchdown! The 49ers are just punching the Patriots in the mouth repeatedly. Wilson races in untouched from 16 yards out to put San Francisco up 23-3 with less than a minute to go in the first half. His 92 yards are nearly more than he had all of last season (105). 49ers 23, Patriots 3

– Another interception for the 49ers. This time Emmanuel Moseley hauls in a bad overthrow by Newton. He had a nice return too to put the 49ers offense in a spot to put up more points before the half.

– And another interception by Garoppolo. He airs one out for Aiyuk on the last play of the half. The rookie was double covered and the Patriots intercepted the throw.

– The 49ers are out-gaining the Patriots 301 to 59 at the half. They have 18 first downs to New England’s four, and the 49ers have run 40 plays to the Patriots’ 16. Dominant first 30 minutes.

END OF FIRST HALF: 49ers 23, Patriots 3

– The Patriots open the second half with a couple of long runs, one for 7 and another for 12.

– Too easy for New England. They’ve cruised down to the 49ers’ 21 in just four plays.

– Big sack by Dre Greenlaw who rushed off the edge. He never got touched — that was great work by the second-year LB.

– Nice job by the 49ers defense to stiffen up. They forced another field goal try. This one is from 41 yards out. That sack from Greenlaw was huge in slowing the Pats offense down. 49ers 23, Patriots 6

– A deep shot to Aiyuk puts the rookie over 100 yards. Not a great looking throw from Garoppolo, but it was a completed deep shot which is good to see from the QB.

– Why not? Wilson again one play after the Aiyuk catch. He runs in from 7 yards out for his third score of the game. He’s been sensational and seems to have gotten strong as the game has gone on. He got rolled up on the touchdown and appeared to have hurt his ankle. Wilson limped off to the sideline under his own power. 49ers 30, Patriots 6

– Another interception. Sheesh. Jamar Taylor snags this one after a throw bounces off the hands of Julian Edelman. It’s the third one of the day for the 49ers.

END OF THIRD QUARTER: 49ers 30, Patriots 6

– Uh oh. Deebo Samuel on a third-down run appeared to hurt his knee. He stepped out of bounds and bent over grabbing his knee. That is a horrible sign for San Francisco.

– Another Gould field goal puts the game even further out of reach. 49ers 33, Patriots 6

– Jamar Taylor registers his second pick of the game. This time it’s against Jarrett Stidham who replaced Cam Newton for this series. Tough day all around for New England’s signal-callers.

– Mitch Wishnowsky punted for the first time with 3:14 left in the game. Good to see him still on the team.

– Kevin Givens notches a sack on the final play of the game. Good for the young defensive lineman to get that one. He’s been a good player for the 49ers all year.

FINAL SCORE: 49ers 33, Patriots 6

Watch: Fred Warner intercepts Cam Newton

The 49ers got a highlight play from their defense when Fred Warner intercepted Patriots QB Cam Newton.

The 49ers got a big-time turnover on the first play of the Patriots’ third series. Pressure forced Cam Newton to roll out and throw on the run. His throw was low and behind his intended target and Fred Warner made a sensational snag. It was Warner’s second pick of the year and set up the 49ers for a chance to go up two scores.

49ers take early lead on Patriots with Jeff Wilson Jr. touchdown

The 49ers went ahead of the Patriots with a game-opening touchdown from Jeff Wilson Jr.

The 49ers opened the scoring at Gillette Stadium with a nine-play, 75-yard touchdown drive on the game’s first possession. Deebo Samuel was key on the drive with two catches for 37 yards, but it was Jeff Wilson Jr. who finished it off. He bashed his way in from three yards out for his second rushing touchdown of the year to put the 49ers up 7-0 over the Patriots.
