More disappointment for 49ers in USA TODAY predictions

Ouch.

A potential Super Bowl hangover isn’t being factored into preseason prognostication about the 49ers. They might just have a roster that’s too good and too experienced to fall victim to it. A prediction from Nate Davis at USA TODAY certainly has San Francisco avoiding a Super Bowl hangover, but their season still ends in disappointment yet again.

Davis has the 49ers finishing with a stellar 13-4 record, along with the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

That in itself would be a rousing success considering the hurdles they’d have to clear as the previous season’s Super Bowl runner up.

Alas, they not only don’t win the title in Davis’s prediction. They don’t even make it back.

Davis has the Packers (the No. 2 seed) representing the NFC against the New York Jets and losing on the NFL’s biggest stage. To get to the Super Bowl the Packers defeat the 49ers at Levi’s Stadium in the NFC championship game.

What a gut punch that would be.

Not only to lose in yet another NFC title game, but to have it come against the Packers – a team the 49ers have defeated in five consecutive playoff matchups – would be particularly brutal. It might also lead to some hard questions about San Francisco’s ceiling now that a team like Green Bay has eclipsed them in an NFC that appears to be catching up to them.

In the big picture another NFC championship trip would be a success for the 49ers organization, but zooming into the last six seasons, it would be hard to deem this version of the 2024 campaign anything less than a failure.

7 things 49ers must improve from divisional round to win NFC championship

The #49ers have 7 things they need to improve from the divisional round if they want to win the NFC championship:

The 49ers didn’t play their ‘A’ game in the divisional playoffs. They may not have even played their ‘B’ or ‘C’ game. It was a mostly rough outing that saw the more talented San Francisco team make a handful of plays that allowed them to pull out a win.

In the NFC championship game the talent gap will close when the Detroit Lions enter Levi’s Stadium. Another subpar performance won’t be overcome with a handful of plays in the closing minutes. If the 49ers want to ensure they don’t fall short in a third consecutive NFC championship, they’ll need to improve these seven things:

Takeaways from a rollercoaster 49ers win over Green Bay

Takeaways from a wild 49ers playoff win over Green Bay:

The 49ers somehow got out of their divisional playoff matchup against the Packers with a 24-21 victory. They’re on to the NFC championship game.

There was no shortage of drama Saturday night with miscues from both teams that kept the game tight the entire way. Here are some of our takeaways from a wild one at Levi’s Stadium:

The good and bad from the 49ers late comeback win vs. Packers in playoffs

Looking at all the good and bad from the 49ers’ rainy comeback win over the Packers in the divisional round of the playoffs.

With a little over six minutes remaining in the divisional round of the playoffs, it looked like the San Francisco 49ers‘ season was heading toward an abrupt and disappointing end. However, a missed 41-yard field goal from Green Bay Packers kicker Anders Carlson opened the door for the 49ers.

Following a flat performance for the first three and a half quarters, Brock Purdy woke up when it mattered most, The 49ers sophomore passer led his team down the field for a go-ahead touchdown. With just over a minute remaining, Christian McCaffrey punched in his second touchdown of the game to give the 49ers a three-point lead.

While the Packers had one last chance to move the ball into field goal range, 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw came to the rescue with a game-ending interception of Jordan Love.

Although it wasn’t easy, the 49ers punched their ticket to the NFC championship game with a roller coaster 24-21 victory over the Packers. Here’s a look at some of the good and bad from San Francisco’s performance in the divisional round of the playoffs.

Why Kyle Shanahan had mixed emotions after Dre Greenlaw’s game-winning INT vs. Packers

Kyle Shanahan was happy Dre Greenlaw snagged his game-sealing interception … until he wasn’t.

The 49ers weren’t good Saturday night vs. the Packers, but they came up with some big plays late to seal a win. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw came up with one of those big plays to snag an interception that sealed the game on Green Bay’s final drive. Head coach Kyle Shanahan was glad his LB came up with the pick, but he had mixed emotions after the play.

What Greenlaw should have done after his diving grab was stay on the ground. There were less than 50 seconds left and the Packers had only two timeouts. The game was over if Greenlaw just stayed down.

Instead, Greenlaw sprang to his feet and started trying to return the ball for a touchdown. He broke tackles, threw stiff arms, reversed field, and gave the Packers ample opportunities to knock the ball out. If they had and recovered, they would have retained possession.

Greenlaw’s return attempt left Shanahan with some mixed feelings after the play.

“The play that Dre made there at the end to get the pick – still have mixed emotions,” Shanahan said in his postgame press conference. “I can’t believe he didn’t get down right away, but that was kinda like the whole day. All the guys I would get really upset with are also the guys I have a lot of love for at the end too because they were the ones that pulled it off to get us the W.”

It was an ugly game for the 49ers right down to the very end on Greenlaw’s return. It worked out for Greenlaw though just like it worked out for San Francisco.

Next time surely Shanahan would like his LB to stay down to take the win without any additional drama. And surely he’d like his team to put together an overall better performance where his emotions aren’t as mixed,

49ers vs. Packers: Dre Greenlaw calls game

Dre Greenlaw called game.

Despite Christian McCaffrey’s late touchdown to take the lead in the fourth quarter, the Green Bay Packers still had a little over a minute on the clock with the chance to tie or win the game.

With the season on the line, the San Francisco 49ers needed one last clutch moment from their defense. After notching a first down, Jordan Love looked down the field for another strike. With the Packers threatening again, Dre Greenlaw called game.

While running out of the pocket, Love floated a pass across his body over the middle of the field. Greenlaw stepped up, coming with a clutch interception. Greenlaw stepped in front of Christian Watson to end the game and the Packers season.

Notes and observations from a thrilling 49ers divisional playoff victory over Packers

Somehow the 49ers won that game. Thoughts:

The 49ers on Saturday got off to a poor start against the Packers at Levi’s Stadium, but they somehow, someway pulled out a 24-21 win over Green Bay.

Here’s a quarter-by-quarter breakdown of a roller coaster playoff game:

Watch: Dre Greenlaw snags interception on tipped pass from Packers’ Jordan Love

Following a tipped pass from Jordan Love, the 49ers linebacker came down with a timely interception.

After having to punt the ball away while trailing by seven points in the second half, the San Francisco 49ers leaned on their defensive unit to hold Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers.

Facing a third down, Love opted to hit his tight end, Tucker Kraft, underneath. Instead, the ball tipped off Kraft’s hands high into the air. 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw was standing underneath the ball, corralling the much-needed interception.

With Greenlaw’s clutch pick, the 49ers defense gave their offense positive field position at the Green Bay 48 yard line with the chance to tie the game.
