49ers change at CB helped spark defensive turnaround vs. Jaguars

The lineup tweak that helped spark the #49ers blowout of the Jaguars:

The 49ers defense looked more like itself in a Sunday romp over the Jaguars, but it looked more like itself thanks in part to looking a little different.

It turns out Steve Wilks’ move to the sideline wasn’t the only change for San Francisco over the bye week. They also made a change in the secondary with cornerback Deommodore Lenoir moving into the slot and CB Ambry Thomas taking over at outside CB. That pushed CB Isaiah Oliver to the bench.

Thomas played 46 of the team’s 57 defensive snaps. Ward played 54, and Lenoir played 53. Oliver was relegated to just three snaps in garbage time.

This is the second time this season the 49ers have made a tweak in the makeup of their cornerback group. It started with a timeshare between Thomas and Oliver as the third CB. That changed when Thomas struggled in Week 2, prompting the coaching staff to move Lenoir outside and Oliver to the slot full time.

Oliver struggled during the team’s three-game losing skid though. In that stretch of games he allowed 15 receptions on 15 targets for 127 yards and two touchdowns while only notching one pass breakup. He also missed three tackles – a huge issue for San Francisco during that losing streak.

It appears the change helped.

The 49ers were better in coverage against the Jags and it helped give the defensive front time to notch five sacks and 10 quarterback hits. Thomas helped hold Jaguars star receiver Calvin Ridley to two catches for 20 yards on three targets. He also forced a fumble by Jags WR Christian Kirk deep in the red zone that ultimately helped San Francisco seal their Week 10 victory late in the third quarter.

Finding the best three cornerbacks has been a journey for the 49ers’ coaching staff, but their ability to adapt as needed has been key to the team’s 6-3 start, and Sunday’s change might have been the biggest key in sparking a 34-3 blowout win.

The good and bad from the 49ers’ blowout win over the Jaguars

Here’s a look at all the good and bad from the 49ers’ blowout road win over the Jaguars.

With the pressure on, Kyle Shanahan, Brock Purdy and Steve Wilks answered the bell in a big way. Behind an impressive performance on both sides of the ball, the 49ers rolled to a 34-3 win on the road against the Jaguars. 8 takeaways from 49ers’ rout of Jaguars

8 takeaways from the #49ers’ destruction of the Jaguars:

The 49ers badly needed a win coming off their bye week. They not only got a victory Sunday in Jacksonville, they appeared to get all the way back on track by throttling the Jaguars 34-3 in a game that was never particularly close.

San Francisco won the turnover battle decisively and outgained the Jags by 216 yards. It was a win reminiscent of the first five weeks, and not the club we saw in the three games before the bye week where they lost and looked out of sorts on both sides of the ball. The opposite was true Sunday.

Here are eight takeaways from the game:

Fred Warner on adjustment with DC Steve Wilks on sideline

Fred Warner talked about how Steve Wilks’ move to the sideline went.

The 49ers defense responded well to defensive coordinator Steve Wilks’ move from the booth to the sideline. In his first game on the field instead up up in the coach’s box, San Francisco’s defense allowed only 221 yards and three points in perhaps their best performance of the season.

Team captain and defensive signal caller Fred Warner in his postgame press conference talked about the adjustment from the coach.

“It was good. It was good having him down there,” Warner said. “The communication was flawless, and yeah, it was good having him down there.”

Communication was a big key in Wilks’ decision to get out of the booth and onto the field. When he’s upstairs he has to relay play calls to a coach on the sideline who then relays the plays to Warner.  Then there’s the issue of direct communication between players and the DC.

Those issues would seem to make some of the team’s defensive woes make sense. There have been a lack of in-game adjustments and some struggles specifically with players being in the wrong spots.

Warner said the improved communication was helpful.

“I think it was pretty similar honestly,” Warner said. “I think the thing was just kinda like us just going into it we wanted to make sure the communication was good in terms of the microphone and him getting the calls to me and I thought he did a great job.”

There were other things the 49ers defense needed to do well Sunday. It was better in coverage and better at getting to the quarterback, but those were likely things fixed over the bye and not a matter of where Wilks called plays.

If the improved communication was helpful, then it’s likely the sideline move will be a permanent one for Wilks.

49ers escape Jacksonville with win, no injuries immediately after game

The #49ers appear to have gotten out of Jacksonville without any injuries.

The 49ers needed a win in Jacksonville to get their season back on track. They got a resounding 34-3 victory, and notched another win by keeping their health intact.

After the game head coach Kyle Shanahan said the team didn’t sustain any injuries in the immediate aftermath of the game.

“No injuries right now,” Shanahan said to open his postgame press conference. “I’m sure there’ll be some tomorrow, but nothing right now.”

Shanahan is scheduled to speak with reporters Monday on a conference call. Typically there are a handful of injuries that crop up in the hours after the game and those are noted in that Monday call.

There were a couple injury scares for the 49ers during Sunday’s game. Defensive tackle Arik Armstead left the game briefly with what appeared to be a leg injury. He returned to action quickly. Defensive end Nick Bosa also got shaken up and momentarily left the game.

It appeared left tackle Trent Williams and wide receiver Deebo Samuel both got through the game without any issues. Williams was dealing with an ankle injury that caused him to miss the previous two games. Samuel missed the same contests with a hairline fracture in his shoulder.

If the 49ers can get into Week 11 without any additional injury problems it would be almost as significant as getting a win in Week 10.

Kyle Shanahan jokes about penalty that negated 49ers defensive TD

The #49ers nearly made a catastrophic mistake, but now head coach Kyle Shanahan can joke about it.

The 49ers averted a self-inflicted disaster Sunday.

A takeaway generated by cornerback Ambry Thomas led to a long fumble return for a touchdown for Thomas. His TD was waved off though for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty thanks to a slew of 49ers, including head coach Kyle Shanahan, leaking out onto the field during the return.

Instead of getting a TD, the 49ers had to take over at their own 19 where the ball was placed after a 15-yard spot foul. San Francisco scored on the ensuing drive which allowed Shanahan to joke about the penalty in his postgame press conference.

“I was real disappointed with getting those first two turnovers and not scoring on either of them and. having to punt,” Shanahan said. “Then when we get the third turnover, we actually score ourselves on defense, but we had to call it back. And that was strategic so we could let the offense do it. So we were finally able to do one.”

Of course the penalty wasn’t actually a strategic play by the 49ers, but their offense took care of business once they got the ball back. They went 81 yards on seven plays to effectively seal the game. Deebo Samuel capped the drive with a 23-yard touchdown run that put the 49ers ahead 27-3 late in the fourth quarter.

That turnover Thomas created wound up being a huge play in the game though. Jacksonville was down 20-3 and going in to score inside the 49ers’ 10. They were on the verge of making it a 20-10 game going into the fourth quarter. Instead Thomas stripped wide receiver Christian Kirk and recovered for the takeaway.

There was a chance the 49ers’ penalty could have been a massive swing play in the game, but they overcame the mistake and a possible disaster is now something the team can joke about.

Watch: Ambry Thomas rips ball away from Jags’ Christian Kirk for clutch forced fumble in redzone

With the Jags threatening, Ambry Thomas stepped up for the 49ers in the red zone.

For the first time in the game, the Jacksonville Jaguars appeared to be threatening. Trailing by 17, Trevor Lawerence led a drive down the field and into the red zone in the second half with the chance to cut into the San Francisco 49ers’ lead.

However, Ambry Thomas and the rest of the 49ers’ defense had other plans. Following a catch and run from Jaguars wide receiver Christian Kirk, Thomas managed to dislodge the ball from Kirk, forcing a clutch fumble in near the goal line.

Via @NFL on Twitter:

Following the fumble, Thomas picked up the ball and ran all the way back for what appeared to be a touchdown after nobody from the Jags touched him down. Yet, after an extended review, the ball was ruled down where Thomas recovered it from Kirk.

After Thomas came up clutch with a forced fumble, the 49ers offense made it count, punching in another touchdown on a Deebo Samuel run.

Notes and observations: The 49ers are back after rolling Jaguars in Week 10

The #49ers looked like the 49ers again in a 34-3 blowout of the Jaguars. Notes and observations from each quarter:

The 49ers didn’t look right in the three weeks leading up to their bye. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said before the bye that the team needed the week off. It looked like a week away paid off for them Sunday in a 34-3 drubbing of the Jaguars in Jacksonville.

Here are our observations and notes from each quarter of San Francisco’s sixth win of the year:

Watch: Brock Purdy hits George Kittle for long TD pass down sideline vs. Jags

The 49ers TE was able to walk in for the score to start the second half against the Jags.

Coming out of halftime, the San Francisco 49ers quickly opened the game up against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Following a Jake Moody field goal in the final seconds of the first half to stretch their lead to 13-3, the 49ers went to work in the second half to cushion on their lead.

With the pocket collapsing around him Purdy flicked a pass over the offensive line to an open George Kittle down the sideline. Kittle was able to shake free of the Jags linebacker Devin Lloyd on his way to walk-in 66-yard touchdown reception.

Via @49ers on Twitter:

Following the fireworks from Purdy and Kittle, the 49ers pushed their lead to 20-3 in the second half.
