49ers rookie was NFL’s best in Week 8

The 49ers’ defensive back landed at the top of PFF’s latest set of rookie rankings for Week 8.

During their much-needed win over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 8, the San Francisco 49ers’ rookie class stood out. Rookies Ricky Pearsall, Isaac Guerendo, Dominic Puni, Renardo Green and Malik Mustapha all helped contribute to the 49ers’ 30-24 win over the Cowboys.

Following their impressive performance against the Cowboys, one member of the 49ers earned the top spot on Pro Football Focus’ latest ranking list. Rookie defensive back Renardo Green was the highest-graded rookie of Week 8 with a 91.3 grade. Green finished ahead of fellow rookies Jer’Zhan Newton, Brian Thomas, Ladd McConkey, Bucky Irving and first-round quarterback Bo Nix.

49ers big win over Cowboys didn’t move them in NFL power rankings

Win over the Cowboys didn’t help the 49ers much in the USA TODAY power rankings.

The San Francisco 49ers needed to beat the Dallas Cowboys in Week 8 to put themselves on more solid footing heading into their Bye week.

While the 30-24 victory at Levi’s Stadium helped the 49ers in the standings, it didn’t do much for them in the USA TODAY NFL power rankings. San Francisco entered the week as the No. 17 team. Their win over the scuffling Cowboys moved them up to No. 16, behind the Los Angeles Rams and Arizona Cardinals.

It’s hard to argue that the 49ers belong much higher.

Trying to order the NFC West is nigh impossible, but both the Rams and Cardinals have wins over the 49ers, and the Rams are getting healthier at wide receiver with Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua both returning.

The fact of the matter for the 49ers is that through eight weeks, they’re a middling NFL team. They have a ceiling much higher than that, and if they get on a roll after the Bye we should see them skyrocket in the power rankings to get back into the tier of Super Bowl contender.

For now, they’re in the middle of the pack because of too many mistakes in big moments that have left them 1-2 in their division and tied with the Seattle Seahawks and the Cardinals for the top spot in the NFC West.

Christian McCaffrey’s return should help, but they need to start stringing wins together with some frequency if they want to re-earn their place in the Super Bowl conversation.

49ers offense gets boost from unlikely source vs. Cowboys

Shoutout to Isaac Guerendo.

The San Francisco 49ers’ offense was stuck in a little bit of a rut Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys, but an unlikely hero helped them turn it around.

In the first half of a 30-24 win over the Cowboys, the 49ers scored only six points. Their run game in particular struggled with running back Jordan Mason churning out only 18 yards on six carries in the first quarter and change.

A shoulder injury wound up forcing Mason into the locker room before halftime, opening the door for rookie fourth-round pick Isaac Guerendo. He entered the game with just 23 carries on the season, including only one in Week 7 against the Chiefs.

Sunday wasn’t the first time Guerendo got an opportunity for extended playing time, but it was certainly his best outing. He rushed for 85 yards on 14 carries and scored his first-career touchdown. He also got to 85 yards with a long run of just 19.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters after the game that the improvement for Guerendo has been clear.

“I think he’s learned from each run he’s gotten,” Shanahan said. “There are a couple runs earlier in the year that he did alright on, but we grade him pretty hard, everybody pretty hard. And he had a couple, like four-yard runs we thought he could have got seven yards on. We go pretty hard on him. And then you watch how he takes that to practice and everything we’ve really kind of been pushing him with, he’s been real coachable, he’s not a sensitive guy, he’s real detailed and he’s very poised for a rookie. Things aren’t too big for him and didn’t get a lot of preseason, but once he got healthy there and throughout this year, I feel he’s gotten better each week.”

Guerendo also played a big role in the 49ers’ Week 6 win over the Seattle Seahawks, but he struggled to find running room in that game before a 76-yard run late in the fourth quarter helped the 49ers seal the victory. He finished the game with 10 carries for 99 yards.

He was more consistent Sunday night with runs of 19 and 15 yards on his first two touches. He flashed his speed and his power, and in general looked more patient in waiting for running lanes to develop.

Shanahan also said Guerendo was running well enough that they didn’t even try to put Mason back in the game after he came out for the second half with his helmet on — a sign he was ready to go.

Guerendo rewarded the 49ers’ faith in him by going for 47 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries in the second half. He also contributed as a pass catcher, hauling in three of his four targets for 17 yards.

The talent has always been apparent with Guerendo, he just wasn’t catching on the way we’ve seen other RBs do in Shanahan’s scheme. Sunday night was his coming out party and it came in a game where the 49ers desperately needed their run game to get rolling to help them turn things around after a rough first half.

With Christian McCaffrey set to return soon, Guerendo may not get another opportunity as a lead RB this season, but he took his opportunity Sunday night and played well enough to be a major cog in a huge 49ers victory.

How 49ers win over Cowboys impacts their trade deadline moves

The 49ers’ win over the Cowboys makes their trade deadline easy: Buy, buy, buy.

The San Francisco 49ers find themselves in an interesting spot with the NFL trade deadline looming on Nov. 5 at 1:00pm Pacific Time.

With a 30-24 win over the Dallas Cowboys, the 49ers pushed their record to 4-4 and put them in a tie for the NFC West lead with the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks.

They figure to get running back Christian McCaffrey back after the Bye week, injecting new life into an offense that struggled to find the end zone for much of the first half of the year.

Had the 49ers lost to the Cowboys, they might have become sellers at the trade deadline with a couple of key players like cornerbacks Charvarius Ward and Deommodore Lenoir headed to free agency and big paydays in the offseason.

However, a win puts San Francisco firmly in the buyers market.

This is a team that in 2021 was 3-5 at one point before finishing 10-7 and making the playoffs. In 2022 they were 3-4 and then won 10-consecutive games to win the division.

Given the impact McCaffrey figures to have, the 49ers can easily talk themselves into contending in 2024.

They need help on the defensive line and at linebacker. Their wide receiver room is a little thin as well. Offensive line help is always welcome, and running back depth could insulate them from a setback from McCaffrey or ongoing issues with RB Jordan Mason’s shoulder that he re-injured Sunday night.

What player(s) the 49ers acquire at the deadline will depend largely on market, injuries, and an internal analysis of their roster. They’ll surely be aggressive in making acquisitions ahead of the deadline though now that they’ve pulled themselves to 4-4 going into their Bye week.

The 49ers won’t get to play another game to analyze what they need, so they can get to work ASAP to find upgrades that may help them rise back into the ranks of Super Bowl contender.

49ers injury update: Deebo Samuel (rib) questionable to return vs. Cowboys

The 49ers pass catcher is listed as questionable to return against the Cowboys after suffering a rib injury during Sunday Night Football.

After Jordan Mason exited Sunday Night Football in the first half, another playmaker for the San Francisco 49ers picked up an injury against the Dallas Cowboys.

Following an exit from the game in the fourth quarter, Deebo Samuel is listed as questionable to return against the Cowboys due to a rib injury.

Via @LindseyThiry on Twitter:

Samuel exited last week’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs after three snaps due to an illness. Samuel was later hospitalized due to pneumonia but was able to return to practice later in the week.

With Samuel’s status questionable on Sunday night, the 49ers will need to lean on rookies Ricky Pearsall and Jacob Cowing along with veteran Chris Conley. George Kittle will likely continue to help lead the 49ers passing attack with Samuel sidelined.

49ers 4th-round pick gets 1st career TD

Isaac Guerendo punched in his first career touchdown on Sunday Night Football against the Cowboys.

After Jordan Mason exited the game in the first half with a shoulder injury, the San Francisco 49ers turned to rookie rusher Isaac Guerendo. The fourth round pick stepped in for Mason and delivered in scoring fashion to start the second half.

Following a long catch and run from George Kittle, the rookie out of Louisville punched in his first touchdown run of his young career. Guerendo burst through the trenches for a four-yard touchdown to cap off the 49ers’ first drive of the third quarter.

49ers RB Jordan Mason exits to locker room early vs. Cowboys

Jordan Mason left to the locker room before the first half ended.

San Francisco 49ers running back Jordan Mason left the team’s game against the Dallas Cowboys early Sunday night.

Mason was hurt in the first quarter after a six-yard carry, but jogged off the field and never went to the blue medical tent. He wound up returning to the game, but jogged to the locker room before the half ended according to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner.

He is officially questionable to return with a shoulder injury.

The 49ers offense was supposed to take the field with just under three minutes to go, so it wasn’t a matter of just getting a head start before the half.

It’s unclear what Mason hurt on the earlier carry, but he did suffer a shoulder injury in Week 6 that made him questionable for Week 7 against the Chiefs.

He seemed to get through the Chiefs game without issue, but he’s not headed to the locker room after just six carries Sunday night.

Those six carries hadn’t been particularly effective. He had only 18 yards with a long run of six yards.

49ers defense off to good start vs. Cowboys

Ji’Ayir Brown comes up with an early interception off Dak Prescott against on Sunday Night Football.

The San Francisco 49ers defense set the tone early against Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football. After drilling a field goal to take a 3-0 advantage, Ji’Ayir Brown came up with a timely play to get the ball back to Brock Purdy and the 49ers’ offense.

With just under five minutes remaining in the first quarter, Prescott fired a deep shot toward Kevonte Turpin that landed in the open arms of 49ers safety Ji’Ayir Brown.

Prior to the interception, Nick Bosa was able to apply some pressure in the face of Prescott. With Bosa looming,  Prescott wasn’t able to get much power into the pass downfield. After Prescott got rid of the football, Bosa blasted the Cowboys’ passer.

49ers injury news: George Kittle, Deebo Samuel active vs. Cowboys

49ers inactives do NOT include George Kittle and Deebo Samuel.

The San Francisco 49ers got good news on the injury front just before their game against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night.

Neither tight end George Kittle nor Deebo Samuel were listed among the team’s inactives, meaning both are officially playing in a massive game for the 49ers.

Kittle was questionable because of a foot injury. Samuel was questionable after a bout with pneumonia. Both players missed Wednesday’s practice and were limited Thursday and Friday.

After going through pregame workouts, both players were good to go in the game.

Here’s who won’t be active for the 49ers:

QB Joshua Dobbs (QB3)
WR Jauan Jennings (hip)
DL Kevin Givens (groin)
K Jake Moody
LB Jalen Graham
CB Rock Ya-Sin
OL Ben Bartch

Cornerback Deommodore Lenoir was also questionable with an illness, but he’s good to go as well.

An interesting twist is that second-year TE Brayden Willis is active for only the second time this season. That may be because the team has questions about whether Kittle will be able to play a full complement of snaps. They may also be aiming to run more multiple TE sets against a Dallas defense that hasn’t been particularly effective at stopping the run.

Kickoff at Levi’s Stadium is set for 5:20pm Pacific Time.

With players like Brandon Aiyuk and Christian McCaffrey already ruled, the San Francisco 49ers are banged up when it comes to playmakers for their Week 8 game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Before meeting the Cowboys in a primetime contest on Sunday Night Football, Kyle Shanahan revealed the latest injury report for the 49ers on Friday.

Via @mattbarrows on Twitter:

For the second straight week, the 49ers will be without Jauan Jennings. Jennings will miss his second consecutive game due to a hip injury. Both Deebo Samuel (illness) and George Kittle (foot) are listed as questionable against the Cowboys.

Here’s the full injury report:
