49ers roster moves good news for defensive line ahead of Week 11

49ers roster moves ahead of Week 11:

The San Francisco 49ers are getting a key piece of their defensive line back ahead of their Week 11 showdown with the Seattle Seahawks.

Defensive lineman Yetur Gross-Matos has been activated off IR according to an announcement from the team. Punter Mitch Wishnowsky and cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. were both placed on IR, and punter Pat O’Donnell was promoted from the practice squad.

Wishnowsky is dealing with a back injury that initially cropped up in training camp and forced him to miss the preseason. He’ll now be out at least four weeks before he’s eligible to return. The team signed O’Donnell to the practice squad early in the week, signaling bad news for Wishnowsky’s status.

The Gross-Matos return could be significant for a 49ers defensive end rotation that has struggled to produce this season. Gross-Matos tried playing through a knee injury he suffered in training camp, but eventually it landed him on IR. That knee issue may have slowed him down some because in three games he posted only one tackle, one quarterback hit and five pressures according to Pro Football Focus.

Ideally Gross-Matos will fit as a defensive end who can also rush the passer from the interior. His return may help make up for the lack of acquisitions on the defensive line at the trade deadline. Sunday will mark his first action since the 49ers’ Week 4 win over the New England Patriots.

San Francisco also brought up cornerback Nick McCloud from the practice squad on a standard elevation. McCloud is a standout special teams player who will replace Luter who is now out for at least four weeks after suffering a pelvis injury in the lead up to Week 11.

Veteran safety Tashaun Gipson was also elevated from the practice squad to provide depth at a position where the 49ers have Ji’Ayir Brown, Malik Mustapha and George Odum on the roster.

49ers roster move isn’t good news for ailing specialist

The 49ers added a new punter to their practice squad while Mitch Wishnowsky deals with an injury.

The San Francisco 49ers might once again be dealing with a missing specialist.

Punter Mitch Wishnowsky has been dealing with a back injury that flared up during the team’s Week 10 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday said the team would be evaluating treatment options, and left Wishnowsky’s status for Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks up in the air.

San Francisco’s practice squad tweak before Wednesday’s game wasn’t a good sign for Wishnowsky’s availability.

The 49ers on Tuesday announced the addition of punter Pat O’Donnell to their practice squad. They released veteran defensive tackle T.Y. McGill in a corresponding move to make room on their 16-man practice squad roster.

O’Donnell, 33, was a sixth-round pick of the Chicago Bears in the 2014 draft out of the University of Miami. He played in 145 games across nine years, including eight with the Bears, and one each with the Green Bay Packers and Atlanta Falcons. His stint with the Falcons last year was only on their practice squad.

He’s averaging 45.1 yards per punt across 616 kicks in his career.

Ideally the 49ers wouldn’t need to replace Wishnowsky, who also missed time in the preseason. However, this is something they’ve dealt with on the kicking side where kickers Jake Moody and Matt Wright both suffered injuries that caused them to miss time.

Given the team’s special teams struggles, having to replace reliable players on those units could be a significant issue moving forward.

49ers re-sign one RB, release another in practice squad shuffle

A familiar RB is back with the 49ers.

The San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday announced a couple of corresponding roster moves before they begin their on-field preparations for Week 11 against the Seattle Seahawks.

Running back Patrick Taylor Jr. re-signed with the 49ers on their practice squad. To make room on the 16-man practice roster, the team released Ke’Shawn Vaughn.

Taylor spent the first nine weeks of the season with the 49ers, but was released Friday before their Week 10 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to make room for Christian McCaffrey when he returned from IR.

It isn’t a huge surprise to see Taylor back in the team’s facility. He was with the club throughout training camp and the preseason and was fine when called upon. He primarily contributed on special teams, but he did see 21 snaps on offense and posted 25 rushing yards on seven carries.

Taylor will provide internal depth for the 49ers behind McCaffrey, Jordan Mason and Isaac Guerendo on the 53-man roster.

Vaughn also spent significant time with the 49ers in the preseason, but he never broke through to carve out any kind of role. He was released ahead of final cuts and re-signed to the practice squad. Vaughn didn’t appear in a regular-season game.

The 49ers will open their Week 11 practices Wednesday.

49ers waive veteran S to make room for CB on practice squad

Renardo Green’s injury may have catalyzed a change on the 49ers’ practice squad.

The San Francisco 49ers on Monday announced a couple of roster moves that impacted their practice squad.

Cornerback Nick McCloud was signed to the 16-man practice squad, and veteran safety Adrian Amos was released in a corresponding move.

The addition of McCloud is likely related to an injury suffered by rookie cornerback Renardo Green during the 49ers’ Week 10 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Green injured his toe and didn’t return according to head coach Kyle Shanahan immediately after the game. Shanahan should have additional information about Green’s injury when he speaks with reporters Monday. McCloud provides some internal depth if Green misses time.

The Buffalo Bills signed McCloud as an undrafted rookie after the 2021 draft. He’s spent four seasons in the NFL and played in 40 games for the Bengals and Giants. McCloud has 10 pass breakups, one interception, three forced fumbles and 1.5 sacks in his career.

Amos became expendable for the 49ers when they added veteran safety Tashaun Gipson. Gipson was up over Amos for Sunday’s game in Tampa Bay because rookie Malik Mustapha was working through a calf injury. Mustapha wound up playing the entire game, and having two veteran safeties on the practice squad didn’t make a ton of sense.

The 49ers will begin Week 11 practices Wednesday.

49ers waive RB, pave way for Christian McCaffrey return

49ers roster move, but no CMC activation yet.

The San Francisco 49ers are officially gearing up for the return of running back Christian McCaffrey.

While they haven’t officially activated McCaffrey off IR, they did make a roster move Friday to clear a 53-man roster spot for the reigning Offensive Player of the Year.

The 49ers on Friday announced running back Patrick Taylor was waived. There was no corresponding move announced, presumably because the spot is being given to McCaffrey.

Taylor joined the 49ers in the offseason and primarily contributed on special teams. He wound up seeing some action on offense while RB Jordan Mason dealt with a shoulder injury. Taylor posted seven carries for 25 yards and one catch for 12 yards on 21 snaps in Weeks 6 and 8.

McCaffrey’s return lessens the need for RB depth in San Francisco. He’ll be backed up by Mason and rookie RB Isaac Guerendo.

It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Taylor re-sign with the 49ers’ practice squad to work as internal depth since they don’t carry an RB on that portion of their roster.

The roster move to officially activate McCaffrey will likely occur Saturday before the 49ers visit the Buccaneers in Tampa Bay. McCaffrey has missed the entire season with Achilles tendinitis. His practice window was opened Monday and he is expected to play in Week 10.

49ers add WR to practice squad, open practice window for injured DL

Some good news in these 49ers roster moves!

The San Francisco 49ers announced a handful of roster moves ahead of Wednesday’s practice.

They officially announced the acquisition of defensive lineman Khalil Davis from the Houston Texans. San Francisco dealt a 2026 seventh-round pick in that move.

The 49ers also announced the signings of wide receiver Russell Gage and safety Tashaun Gipson to the practice squad.

Gage is an intriguing veteran option who missed all of last season with a torn ACL. Before hurting his knee late in the 2022 campaign, he’d played in 74 games across five NFL seasons. Gage as a sixth-round pick of the Atlanta Falcons in the 2018 draft out of LSU.

In his 74 games he racked up 244 receptions for 2,491 yards and 14 touchdowns. He’s the exact type of receiver the team likely would have aimed to acquire via trade. Instead of trading draft capital to acquire that player, they added Gage to the practice squad where he’ll get a chance to acclimate to the offense while they determine whether he can help their wide receiver depth.

Gipson spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons with the 49ers. He was recently released by the Jacksonville Jaguars, and gives San Francisco some much-needed veteran safety depth.

In a corresponding move to clear a practice squad spot, the 49ers released WR Malik Turner.

Finally, the 49ers have opened the practice window for defensive lineman Yetur Gross-Matos. He’s a key piece of the defensive line rotation and his pending return may have been why the club wasn’t more aggressive in looking to add defensive end help at the trade deadline.

Gross-Matos has been dealing with a knee injury since the final game of the preseason, and he’s been out since Week 6. He’s played in three games this year and has one tackle and one QB hit.

49ers roster moves may be good news for 2 49ers offensive stars

49ers roster moves for Week 8:

The San Francisco 49ers on Saturday announced a pair of practice squad elevations that bode well for wide receiver Deebo Samuel and tight end George Kittle.

San Francisco elevated kicker Anders Carlson and safety Adrian Amos from the practice squad for their Week 8 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football.

Carlson is the only healthy kicker in the building while Jake Moody nurses a high ankle sprain, so it’s not a surprise the 49ers used one of their two elevations on the kicker. He drilled a pair of field goals in Week 7, but missed an extra point.

Amos gives the 49ers some safety depth behind Ji’Ayir Brown, Malik Mustapha. George Odum dealt with a knee injury during the week and is officially questionable on the injury report.

By not elevating a wide receiver or an additional tight end, the 49ers may be hinting that Samuel and Kittle are expected to play Sunday night. Samuel has been dealing with pneumonia that hospitalized him, and Kittle has a foot sprain he suffered in Week 7. Both players are officially questionable on the injury report after missing Wednesday’s session, and getting limited practices in Thursday and Friday.

The 49ers have WRs Terique Owens, Trent Taylor and Malik Turner on the practice squad. Taylor and Turner in particular appeared to be viable options because of their special teams contributions. Neither will be up for Week 8.

Undrafted rookie Mason Pline is the only tight end on the practice squad. He’s yet to be elevated for a game this season.

49ers release DL for 3rd time as part of practice squad tweaks

More practice squad moves for the 49ers:

The San Francisco 49ers on Thursday announced a small tweak to their practice squad.

Defensive end Jonathan Garvin, who spent most of August with the 49ers in the preseason, was released to make room for defensive tackle Nesta Jade Silvera.

This marks the third time Garvin has been let go by the 49ers. They released him as part of final cuts on August 27, but re-signed him to their practice squad shortly after. He was released from the practice squad in mid-September, then re-signed to that unit in early October. Now he’s been released again to become a free agent.

Jade Silvera spent the first portion of this season with the Las Vegas Raiders after they made him a seventh-round pick in last year’s draft. As a rookie he posted two tackles in two games. This season he played in all seven games for Las Vegas and racked up eight tackles.

It makes sense the 49ers would want to add some defensive tackle depth to the practice squad after undrafted rookie DT Evan Anderson was promoted to the active roster. San Francisco has dealt with a slew of injury problems on the DL, so having an additional DT in the building helps insulate them from another injury up front.

49ers roster moves: WR Ricky Pearsall officially activated

Some 49ers roster moves!

The San Francisco 49ers officially activated first-round pick Ricky Pearsall off the Non-Football Injury list as part of a flurry of roster moves ahead of their Week 7 bout with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Pearsall has been on the NFI since suffering a gunshot wound to the chest during an attempted robbery in San Francisco the week before the regular season began.

The No. 31 overall pick in this year’s draft had his 21-day practice window opened Monday before the team’s bonus practice. They didn’t need more than a week of practice to decide to activate the rookie receiver. He was a full participant Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and was officially listed as questionable on the injury report.

His activation makes it appear he’ll suit up for the first time as a pro Sunday.

In a corresponding move, kicker Matthew Wright was placed on Injured Reserve after suffering shoulder and back injuries while trying to make a tackle on a kickoff in Week 6. He was with the club because kicker Jake Moody was hurt the week prior, also while making a tackle on a kickoff.

With no kicker on the active roster, former Packers kicker Anders Carlson was elevated from the practice squad after signing early in the week. Carlson, 26, connected on 27-of-33 field goals last season with Green Bay in his only NFL season.

Undrafted rookie safety Jaylen Mahoney was also elevated from the practice squad to provide depth at safety and special teams contributions.

The 49ers and Chiefs kick off at 1:25pm Pacific Time from Levi’s Stadium on Sunday.

49ers add depth from practice squad at DL, S for Week 6

Some 49ers roster moves!

The San Francisco 49ers on Thursday announced a pair of practice squad elevations for their Week 6 matchup with the Seattle Seahawks.

Undrafted rookie defensive lineman Evan Anderson and undrafted rookie safety Jaylen Mahoney were both brought up as standard elevations for Thursday’s game. They’ll revert to the practice squad Friday.

It makes sense this pair was called up for San Francisco. Defensive tackle Jordan Elliott is out with a knee injury and safety Talanoa Hufanga was placed on IR with a wrist injury.

Anderson made his debut against the New England Patriots in Week 4. He had a sack and forced fumble in that game after beating out a couple of veterans to earn the elevation in that week of practice. He’ll provide rotational depth on the D-line.

Mahoney was also up for the Patriots game. He has yet to play on defense, but he did record a tackle in seven defensive snaps. He figures to contribute on special teams while providing depth at safety where Ji’Ayir Brown and Malik Mustapha are the likely starters.

The 49ers and Seahawks kick off at 5:15 from Lumen Field in Seattle.
