What’s at stake for 49ers in Week 12 action?

Here’s what’s at stake for the #49ers in Week 12:

Typically a Sunday off for the 49ers means there are several games for fans to keep an eye on that could impact San Francisco. That’s not the case in Week 12 with only one game affecting the 49ers and their quest for the No. 1 seed.

That one game is massive though. It’s the Bills visiting the Eagles for a 1:25pm Pacific Time kickoff.

If the Eagles win it lightens the stakes of the 49ers-Eagles showdown in Philadelphia a little since Philly would still have a two-game lead on San Francisco. It would still be a huge game since the Eagles could effectively lock up the one seed by beating the 49ers, while San Francisco would still be one game back even if they won at Philly. They would hold the all important head-to-head tiebreaker though, which would be crucial in the scenario where they’re still a game back.

However, that situation pales in comparison to what happens if Philadelphia loses to Buffalo.

If the Bills win and drop the Eagles to 9-2, it sets up a showdown for the NFC’s top seed in Week 13. A 49ers win over a 9-2 Eagles squad puts both teams at 9-3 and gives San Francisco the head-to-head tiebreaker. A 49ers loss in that scenario would effectively end their hopes of a top seed in the NFC since they’d be two back and not hold the tiebreaker.

Things could get messy down the stretch in the NFC with the Lions also in the mix for the No. 1 seed. For now though the Eagles are directly ahead of the 49ers and losses for them put San Francisco in a more advantageous spot heading into their NFC championship game rematch in Week 13.

49ers practice report: Deebo Samuel limited ahead of Week 12

WR Deebo Samuel showed up as a limited participant in practice with a hamstring injury.

There was a bit of a surprise on the 49ers’ practice participation report when they returned to practice Wednesday.

Prior to the session head coach Kyle Shanahan said DL Arik Armstead would be out with his foot and ankle issues, and quad/Achilles injuries would make DE Samson Ebukam a limited participant. LT Trent Williams was given a veteran’s day off.

All of those players were on the practice participation report as expected. WR Deebo Samuel also showed up as a limited participant though with a hamstring injury.

There was no indication after Monday’s game that Samuel was injured, so it could’ve happened in practice.

Thursday will give a better indication as to whether the limited session was precautionary or something more serious.

Samuel on Monday tied his season high with 10 touches while hauling in six receptions and notching four carries for 94 yards with a 39-yard rushing TD.

49ers roster moves: 3 practice windows open, WR added to practice squad

The #49ers made a handful of roster moves coming out of the bye week.

The 49ers on Monday issued a handful of roster moves as they returned to the team facility following their week off.

A bye week had the anticipated effect of giving a few injured players time off enough to get healthy, and the team opened the practice windows of three players that have been on IR for at least four weeks. The club will have three weeks to decide whether to activate each player or place them on season-ending IR. They won’t count against the roster and they won’t show up on practice participation reports until they’re activated.

San Francisco also made a couple changes to their practice squad ahead of their Week 10 preparations.

Here is a quick rundown of the roster moves:

MRI confirms torn ACL for 49ers CB Emmanuel Moseley

An MRI confirmed the worst for #49ers CB Emmanuel Moseley.

The 49ers on Monday had the bad news on cornerback Emmanuel Moseley confirmed. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported an MRI confirmed Moseley tore his ACL in San Francisco’s 37-15 win over the Panthers.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan immediately after the game said the club feared the season-ending ligament tear for the veteran cornerback. The MRI confirmed the initial on-field tests.

Moseley went down late in the fourth quarter  Sunday when he landed awkwardly after defending a deep pass by Panther QB Baker Mayfield. He immediately clutched at his left knee before eventually limping off the field with the training staff. San Francisco will place Moseley on IR.

This was a tough year for Moseley to go down with a major injury. He’s playing the best football of his career in an excellent 49ers defense, and he’s due to hit free agency this offseason.

Moseley on Sunday had a pick-six at the end of the first half that put the 49ers up 17-3. In five games this season he had 21 tackles, one interception and five pass breakups.

49ers options with Jimmy Garoppolo limited after Baker Mayfield

One of the few potential trade options for Jimmy Garoppolo is now off the table after the Baker Mayfield trade. Now what?

The 49ers are running out of cards to play in the ongoing Jimmy Garoppolo saga. It appeared the Carolina Panthers were the best bet to land the QB, but they traded for Browns QB Baker Mayfield and slammed the door shut on one of the final landing spots for Garoppolo.

San Francisco still has a handful of options, although none are particularly appealing. The Browns are eating part of Mayfield’s salary and only acquired a conditional fifth-round pick to make the choice. It’s likely the 49ers would also need to absorb some of the $25.55 million just to get a late Day 3 selection.

Lets run through the few options San Francisco has left with Garoppolo:

49ers to add DL Hassan Ridgeway

The #49ers bolstered their defensive line depth with an experienced free agent.

The 49ers are bolstering their defensive line depth. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported veteran DL Hassan Ridgeway is joining San Francisco on a one-year deal worth $2.5 million.

Ridgeway, 27, was a fourth-round pick of the Colts in 2016. He spent his first three seasons in Indianapolis before joining the Eagles for three years.

Over six seasons he‘s played in 65 games with 12 starts at multiple spots along the defensive line. That versatility will play well for a San Francisco defensive front that values the ability to play different positions.

Ridgeway for his career has 80 tackles, 13 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks. He’ll be a candidate to help make up for the loss of DL DJ Jones who’s headed to Denver.

49ers LB Dre Greenlaw to miss 6-8 weeks

The #49ers will be without LB Dre Greenlaw for 6-8 weeks.

The 49ers on Thursday got bad news on linebacker Dre Greenlaw. Matt Barrows of the Athletic reported Greenlaw will have surgery on a groin injury he suffered in the season opener. NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported the procedure will keep Greenlaw out six-to-eight weeks.

Greenlaw returned an interception for a touchdown late in the first half of the 49ers’ Week 1 win over the Lions. He missed the next series and exited to the locker room early.

Azeez Al-Shaair, who was excellent in Detroit, figures to slide into the Will linebacker role. Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles was the first linebacker off the bench after Greenlaw’s injury, so it stands to reason he’ll be the starting Sam LB in Philadelphia.

Former Eagles LB Nathan Gerry is the only linebacker on the practice squad. He could be elevated Sunday if the 49ers want some additional LB depth.
