What do the Rams need to do to beat the 49ers for the first time since 2018?

The 49ers have the Rams’ number recently. How can LA change that?

The last thing standing between Matthew Stafford and his first Super Bowl appearance is the San Francisco 49ers. For the Los Angeles Rams, this is a problem.

The Rams haven’t beaten their in-state NFC West rival since 2018. San Francisco is 6-0 against Los Angeles, sweeping the regular season home-and-home series in each of the last three years. The Niners’ dominance in that stretch has taken on several forms. They’ve won low-scoring affairs (20-7 in 2019) and shootouts (34-31 later that season). Most recently, San Francisco punched its playoff ticket by overcoming a 17-0 deficit in a Week 18 overtime win.

That leaves a difficult puzzle for Rams coach Sean McVay to decipher. Los Angeles is a 3.5-point favorite at home, but history suggests his team will fail to live up to those modest expectations. So what does he have to do to stop the surge of a Niners team that’s feasted on opponent’s miscues to rally to the NFC Championship game this winter?

The San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams battle in the NFC Championship Game with a trip to Super Bowl LVI on the line. Kick-off from SoFi Stadium for the NFC West foes is set for Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the 49ers vs. Rams odds and lines; check back for our NFL picks and predictions.

The 49ers stunned the Green Bay Packers with a 13-10 victory in the Divisional Round Saturday despite not scoring a single offensive touchdown. They won with strong special teams play including a blocked field goal at the end of the first half and a blocked punt that was returned for a touchdown with just under 5 minutes remaining as they capitalized on the Packers’ miscues.

San Francisco has won four games in a row, including three elimination games as underdogs against the Rams, Dallas Cowboys and Packers.

The Rams pulled off an upset of their own Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a 30-27 road victory. They led 27-3 at one point in the third quarter but allowed the Bucs to score 24 unanswered points to tie the game with 42 seconds remaining.

However, QB Matthew Stafford hit WR Cooper Kupp for a 44-yard gain with 5 seconds left and PK Matt Gay drilled a 30-yard field goal to win it for the Rams. They’ve won back-to-back games since losing to the 49ers in Week 18.

49ers at Rams head-to-head

This will be the third meeting between the Rams and 49ers this season. The 49ers won both games in the regular season, including a miraculous overtime victory in Week 18 after erasing a 17-point deficit with an incredible comeback.

The 49ers have now won six games in a row against the Rams, sweeping them the last three seasons. The 49ers are 7-3 straight up and ATS in their last 10 against the Rams.

The Over/Under is split 5-5 in those 10 games but the total has gone Over just once in their last three meetings. San Francisco has had L.A.’s number in recent years, despite often being the underdogs.
