49ers Week 18 injury report: Help could be on the way at WR

Here’s the #49ers Week 18 injury report where reinforcements could be coming at WR:

There weren’t any surprises on the 49ers’ Week 18 injury report. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said cornerback Jason Verrett suffered a season-ending shoulder injury, but Verrett was on the practice squad and not required to show up on the status report for Sunday’s game.

No surprises is good news for San Francisco since they already had as many as seven players expected to miss the game, including running back Christian McCaffrey.

The 49ers have six players ruled out and four others listed as questionable. Two of the questionable players are wide receivers aiming to come off IR. In fact, the team could have as many as three WRs come off the injury report to play in Sunday’s game.

49ers injury report: WR Deebo Samuel will return vs. Rams

No news was good news for 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel on Friday. The 2019 second-round pick has missed the 49ers’ last three games with a hamstring injury, but he was not listed on the team’s status report for Sunday’s game against the Rams. …

No news was good news for 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel on Friday. The 2019 second-round pick has missed the 49ers’ last three games with a hamstring injury, but he was not listed on the team’s status report for Sunday’s game against the Rams.

Samuel initially injured his hamstring late in the 49ers’ Week 7 blowout win over the Patriots. The ailment wound up pushing him out all the way through the Bye week as the team tried getting as healthy as possible for a late-season playoff run.

This wasn’t the first time the second-year receiver has missed games. He was also out the first three weeks with some lingering effects of a foot injury he suffered during an offseason workout. Sunday will be just his fifth game of the year. He has 16 receptions for 185 yards and a touchdown to go along with six carries for 14 yards.

Here’s what San Francisco’s official status report looks like:

49ers practice report: Dee Ford misses practice with neck injury

The San Francisco 49ers were without defensive end Dee Ford in Thursday’s practice.

A surprise name landed on the 49ers’ practice report Thursday. Defensive end Dee Ford missed the session with a neck injury after participating in full Wednesday.

Ford spent most of last season working through quad and knee injuries, and had surgery in the offseason to clean up a chronic knee tendinitis issue. Now there’s a new ailment he’s dealing with.

Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh told reporters after Thursday’s session that he wasn’t too concerned with Ford’s injury though. A better indicator of his availability for Sunday will come Friday.

A bit of good news for the 49ers and their ailing secondary was the return of cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon who went into concussion protocol Wednesday after a hit in last Sunday’s season opener. He wasn’t a full go, but he did participate in a blue non-contact jersey.

Here’s Thursday’s full practice report:

Did not practice

DE Dee Ford (neck)
CB Jason Verrett (hamstring)
WR Richie James (hamstring)
TE George Kittle (knee)

Limited participation

CB Ahkello Witherspoon (concussion)

49ers injury report: Deebo Samuel officially out vs. Cardinals

San Francisco 49ers WR Deebo Samuel was listed as “out” on the injury report.

The 49ers won’t have wide receiver Deebo Samuel for their season opener against the Arizona Cardinals. He was officially listed as “out” on the team’s Friday injury report. Samuel didn’t practice Wednesday or Thursday, and was out again Friday which put the writing on the wall that he wouldn’t be available Sunday. The injury report made that official.

Any optimism the team had about the second-year receiver’s availability for Week 1 was always guarded. Playing in Week 1 would’ve put him on the front end of the reported 12-16 week timeline on the Jones fracture he sustained in June. San Francisco’s training staff typically handles injuries pretty conservatively. They weren’t going to risk losing Samuel for an extended period by forcing him into the lineup to start the season.

Samuel was taken off the Non-Football Injury list before the season though, so the team has to be optimistic that he can return within the first couple weeks.

Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is officially listed as “questionable” with a hamstring injury after a pair of limited practices to wrap up the week. Center Ben Garland is in the same spot while he works through an ankle injury. We likely won’t know their statuses until Sunday just before kickoff.

Here’s the full injury report:

Out

WR Deebo Samuel (foot)
CB Jason Verrett (hamstring)

Questionable

C Ben Garland (ankle)
WR Brandon Aiyuk (hamstring)

49ers injury report: Brandon Aiyuk returns to practice

49ers rookie WR Brandon Aiyuk was back in practice Thursday for the first time since late August.

The 49ers on Thursday got a little bit of good news when they took the field for practice. Rookie wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who hasn’t practiced since injuring his hamstring late in training camp, was back in action on a limited basis.

While Aiyuk is still an unknown commodity and a rookie who has to find his NFL legs, having an additional explosive player available. Sunday would be good for the 49ers’ offense. The No. 25 overall pick in this year’s draft was initially labeled “week-to-week” by head coach Kyle Shanahan after the receiver suffered a minor hamstring strain in an August 23 practice.

The team has sidelined him since then, and a limited Thursday session doesn’t necessarily guarantee he will play or play with a full workload Sunday in the season opener.

There were no other changes from Wednesday’s injury report though. A final injury report Friday will put official statuses on each player before Sunday’s 1:25pm kickoff.

Here’s Thursday’s report:

Did not participate

WR Deebo Samuel (foot)
CB Jason Verrett (hamstring)

Limited participation

C Ben Garland (ankle)
WR Brandon Aiyuk (hamstring)

Arik Armstead to miss 49ers’ practice with back irritation

Arik Armstead will miss 49ers practice with some back irritation.

The 49ers aren’t pushing the envelope with injuries early in training camp. Defensive lineman Arik Armstead won’t participate in Saturday’s session with back irritation according to reporters on site. Jalen Hurd and Jordan Reed will also be eased back into practice after missing all of 2019 with injuries.

Armstead earned a five-year, $85 million deal in the offseason after leading the 49ers with 10.0 sacks last year. It’s not a surprise they’re being extremely cautious with a player they expect to be a big part of their defensive line. This will be something to keep an eye on, but there’s no reason for any major concern.

Hurd is entering his second season with a chance to have a significant impact on the 49ers’ receiving corps. He had a strong first preseason game last year and looked to be on his way to carving out a role in the offense as a rookie. A back injury ahead of the second preseason contest wound up sidelining him for all of the 2019 campaign. Putting him back into football activities slowly tracks with how cautious the team was with Hurd last season. He’ll need to ramp up to full speed eventually, but there’s no need to rush it on Day 1 of camp.

Reed is in a similar spot after missing the 2019 season with a concussion he suffered during the preseason. Injuries have defined Reed’s career, so an already conservative training staff will surely continue taking extra precautions with him.

Injuries and injury reports are always worth tracking, especially during a pandemic when there were no offseason activities. There’s no reason for panic yet from an injury standpoint, but it’ll be worth keeping a close eye on with games just under a month away.
