Texas Injury Update: Positive progress for 3 hurt starters ahead of Peach Bowl vs. ASU

There’s positive news about three key Texas Longhorns starters ahead of college football playoffs quarterfinal Peach Bowl vs. Arizona State.

The College Football Playoff quarterfinal Peach Bowl between the Texas Longhorns and the Arizona State Sun Devils is just a few days away. As UT’s squad comes back from the holiday break, the Texas coaching staff is evaluating the health of some of the starters hurt before and during the Clemson game.

Anwar Richardson of OrangeBloods.com reports there is positive progress for three key Longhorns players.

Richardson says the Texas coaching staff is optimistic that Texas WR Isaiah Bond will play in the Peach Bowl. But they are making preparations in the game plan if Bond can’t go on game day.

The Rivals scribe also says Jake Majors and Cam Williams are both expected to play against ASU. In his weekly press conference, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian gave more information on Williams’ status saying it was “not as serious as we thought. That was more of a precautionary MRI, so we feel comfortable about that.”

Sarkisian had positive things to say about backup offensive lineman Trevor Goosby “I thought Trevor did a really nice job,” Sarkisian said. “I highlighted him this morning with the team. They had an elite defensive end, first-round draft pick defensive end. I thought he held his own, more than held his own, and for a guy — to think he’s been a backup all year and against A&M, seven plays in, he goes and plays left tackle in that game, plays left tackle against Georgia, and then he thinks, OK, I’m back as a backup, and then in this ballgame, in the second quarter he gets thrown in at right tackle against a pretty good pass rush, a couple pretty good defensive ends from Clemson.”

Goosby had the third-highest passing blocking grade of any UT offensive lineman against Clemson, according to Pro Football Focus. The redshirt freshman also took over for OT Kelvin Banks Jr. against Texas A&M and had the highest pass-blocking grade of any Texas player against the Aggies. Goosby started for Banks in the SEC championship game.

TV announcing crew set for Texas vs. Arizona State in Peach Bowl

Find out who will be the TV commentating crew for college football playoff quarterfinal in the Peach Bowl between Texas and Arizona State.

With a win over the Clemson Tigers in the first round of the College Football Playoffs, the Texas Longhorns advanced to the quarterfinals against the Arizona State Sun Devils in the Peach Bowl.

This will be the second time in program history that UT will face ASU. The first came in the 2007 Holiday Bowl when Jamaal Charles and Colt McCoy beat Arizona State 52-34. The game also features a duel between the last two Big 12 champions.

Arizona State won the Big 12 in its first year in the conference. The Sun Devils feature standout running back Cam Skattebo, who has rushed for 1,568 yards to go with 19 touchdowns. That includes seven 100-yard rushing games, including a 262-yard performance against Mississippi State early in the season.

The New Year’s Day game will air on ESPN at Noon CT on Wednesday, Jan. 1. The game will be held in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The commentators for the game will be Joe Tessitore on play-by-play, Jesse Palmer as the color analyst and Katie George will serve as the sideline reporter.

ESPN FPI predicts one-sided Peach Bowl CFP quarterfinal between Texas and Arizona State

ESPN’s super computers say the CFP quarterfinal between Texas and Arizona State in the Peach Bowl will be very one-sided.

The Arizona State Sun Devils have gained the respect of the college football world. By winning the new-look expanded Big 12 in emphatic fashion, ASU rolls into the CFP quarterfinals red-hot and well-rested.

But the ESPN super computers are apparently unimpressed with the Sun Devils, at least when compared to SEC runner-up Texas.

Led by transfer quarterback Sam Leavitt from Michigan State and transfer running back Cam Skattebo from Sacramento State, ASU has used a prolific offense to beat four ranked teams in 2024 and peak at the end of the season.

Leavitt has thrown for 2,663 yards and 24 touchdowns with just five interceptions. He is the fiery leader of the Sun Devils. Skattebo has set ASU records with 22 total TDs and 19 rushing touchdowns. He is 75 short of becoming the all-time Arizona State rushing leader.

Still, Texas is a heavy favorite in the Peach Bowl at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. UT is a 12.5 point favorite. ESPN’s FPI Matchup Predictor agrees. The index powered by ESPN Analytics says Texas has a 79.7% chance of beating ASU and advancing to the college football playoff semifinals at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
