Rutgers baseball: Owens made an impact in Scotty Young’s recruiting decision

When asked what led to Young’s decision, he explained how Rutgers head coach Steve Owens was a big reason why he became a Scarlet Knight.

Rutgers Baseball 2024 commit Scotty Young committed to the Scarlet Knights in May. Young is like to replace Rutgers star outfielder Ryan Lasko next season.

When asked what led to Young’s decision, the JUCO outfielder explained how Rutgers head coach Steve Owens was a big reason why he became a Scarlet Knight. Owen’s straightforwardness and honesty led to the California native’s decision to join the Scarlet Knights in 2024.

Young told Rutgers Wire this week that the approach from Owens helped convince him to commit to Rutgers.

“I mean, he was very straightforward with who he thought I was as a player and what he thinks I can offer to the program. That was important to me,” Young said in his interview with Rutgers Wire.

“I mean, he told me the truth. I think him telling me the truth was one of the reasons that I was ready to come and play for a guy that’s going to tell me the truth. I know that he’s not going to tell me anything that isn’t straightforward. I think that’s one of the main personal traits I love about him most, is that he’s going to be straightforward.”

Owens’s bond and trust he creates with his players stood out the most with Young when having recruitment talks with the Rutgers head coach. In the last four years, Owens has built a winning culture with his players and gained their confidence.

“He’s always going to tell you the truth. I think that creates sort of a bond of trust between the players and a coach because there’s no weird gray areas,” Young said.

“I mean, everything’s in white and black, you know, what needs to be done to win. Obviously, he’s done such a good job of that these last four years. So I think I think he has a really good recipe in place.”

With the departure of the aforementioned Lasko, the Scarlet Knights will have a vacancy in center field next season and likely will be looking for Young to fill that vacant role.

Scotty Young discusses his decision on joining Rutgers baseball

After capturing the DIII Baseball National Championship, Rutgers 2024 recruit Scotty Young discusses his decision on being a Scarlet Knight.

After capturing the NJCAA DIII Baseball World Series – National Championship, Scotty Young is now focused on his next chapter. Young, who committed to Rutgers baseball this spring, is honed in on stepping up to Big Ten baseball.

At the World Series, Young had four hits, an RBI, a walk, three runs, and a stolen base as Rowan College (Gloucester) defeated Dallas College Eastfield 15-7 in the national championship.

[lawrence-related id=27120]

When speaking with Young, he provided insight into what led him to Rutgers and why Rutgers baseball will be his new home. On Saturday, Young talked with Rutgers Wire about why he committed to the Scarlet Knights.

“It’s a winning culture. I mean, I’m a winner. I’ve always been a part of winning programs. I think that’s part of the reason I love baseball so much is I love the ability to compete and the ability to win,” Young told Rutgers Wire.

“Rutgers doesn’t do anything shy of that for sure. I mean, they’ve won an extreme amount of games in these last four years. I think we have a lot of pieces coming back next year along with the pieces that are coming in to put something really special together next year.”

With the departure of the current outfielder Ryan Lasko, the Scarlet Knights will have a vacancy in center field next season. Young, a natural centerfielder, is eager to compete for the vacant position and have the opportunity to play in the Big Ten.

“I’m looking forward just getting on the field, having that Rutgers name on my on my chest, playing for a program that everyone is sort of expecting to do really well. Next year, we can really make something special happen,” Young said.

“So I’m really looking forward to the postseason play next year. I think we can make a really deep run, but that’s all going to start when we get to campus on September 6, then we got to start building a winning culture.”

Young had 193 at-bats this past season, logging 85 hits, eight doubles, two triples, 26 strikeouts, and 13 walks, finishing as the third-best hitter on Rowan’s 2022-2023 roster.

Rutgers Baseball lands transfer outfielder Pete Ciuffreda

The Scarlet Knights quickly started their off-season recruitment for next season, recruiting 2024 transfer outfielder Pete Ciuffreda.

As Rutgers baseball’s 2023 season concluded, the Scarlet Knights quickly started their off-season recruitment for next season, recruiting 2024 transfer Pete Ciuffreda via the transfer portal.

Ciuffreda is a 6-foot-1, 230-pound senior outfielder who started three years at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. The New Jersey native from Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, guided the Leopards to a 15-37 record in his final season at Lafayette, finishing fifth in the Patriot League’s standings.

In 2023, Ciuffreda started all 52 games for the Leopards, recording 50 hits, 39 runs, 29 RBIs, five doubles, a .265 batting average, and a .895 OPS. Also, Ciuffreda broke the school’s record for most home runs in a single season with 13. For his efforts last season, Ciuffreda earned All-Patriot League First Team honors.

Rutgers will target this position in their 2024 recruiting class?

Rutgers football has added eight recruits to their class of 2024. What position should Rutgers focus on for the class of 2024?

Rutgers football has added eight recruits to their class of 2024 as they continue to reshape their program for the future. Six out of the eight 2024 commitments are projected to play on the offensive side of the ball, with the Scarlet Knights reorganizing their offensive around new offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca. As Rutgers reshapes their football program, what position should Rutgers focus on for the class of 2024?

Wide Receiver

The wide receiver position needs some help as it lost four players with prior starting experience from last season. In 2022, the Scarlet Knights lacked explosive plays, having the Big Ten’s least feared wide receiving corps. As the 2023 season inches closer, Rutgers has six returning wide receivers returning from the 2022 season, with the addition of nine incoming recruits/transfers. The Scarlet Knights recruited receivers have yet to step up and take hold of that No.1 receiver spot.

Rutgers has had some splashes in the transfer portal this offseason with the addition of JaQuae Jackson and Naseim Brantley, but you can’t always rely on the transfer portal to produce top-notch wide receivers.

Rutgers’ head coach Greg Schiano should continue recruiting some explosive talent at the outside positions to help his developing quarterbacks. Rutgers went heavy in the 2023 recruiting class on wide receivers, but until there is production, expect the staff to keep recruiting receivers.

So far, the Scarlet Knights have received one commitment in their 2024 class at the wide receiver position, with a verbal commitment from Isaiah Crumpler. Look for Schiano and his staff to sign two to three more receivers for their class of 2024.

2022 returnees at the wide receiver position:

Seniors:

  1. Isaiah Washington
  2. Christian Dremel;

Juniors:

  1. Chris Long

Sophomores:

  1. Max Patterson
  2. Rashad Rochelle
  3. Fitzroy Ledgister

Incoming wide receivers:

  4. Ian Strong (freshman)
  5. Dylan Brathwaite (freshman)

Rutgers Football 2024 recruit Matthew Ogunniyi’s film study

Rutgers football continues its strong 2024 recruiting trend with the commitment of Matthew Ogunniyi. How can the 2024 recruit help Rutgers?

Rutgers football continues its strong recruiting trend for its 2024 recruiting class with the early May commitment of tight end Matthew Ogunniyi. The three-star prospect from Charles Herbert Flowers High School (Upper Marlboro, MD) is one of two tight ends to commit to Rutgers football’s 2024 recruiting class.

Ogunniyi received Power Five offers from West Virginia and Rutgers to go along with offers from Temple and Texas A&M. Rutgers tight end coach Andrew Aurich recruited the Maryland prospect, providing his verbal commitment on May 1.

[lawrence-related id=26600]

As a junior, Ogunniyi recorded eight receptions for 286 yards and five touchdowns in seven games for the Jaguars. According to 247Sports, Ogunniyi is No. 56 tight end in the nation and the No. 25 overall prospect in Maryland among his recruiting class. Ogunniyi has the potential to be an outstanding addition to the Rutgers offense. The 2024 recruit has a 5.5 recruiting rating (three stars), according to Rivals.com.

Film Study

According to Ogunniyi’s Hudl profile, the junior tight end had the following athleticism stats:

40 Yard Dash 100 Meter Dash 400 Meter Dash
4.56 Seconds 11.4 Seconds 50.8 Seconds

Ogunniyi is an under-the-radar recruit who can make big plays. At 6-foot-5 and 205 pounds, he has the potential to play wide receiver or a tight end at the Big Ten level. Unlike Rutgers’ other 2024 tight-end recruit Monte Keener, Ogunniyi has a ton of speed. He is going to be a match-up nightmare for opposing defenses.

[lawrence-related id=27179]

The 2024 prospect has excellent hands and can rack up yardage after the catch. Ogunniyi can line up anywhere on the field, causing favorable mismatches for the offense. Also, Ogunniyi can run multiple route combinations, making him versatile in different offensive sets.

Recruited as a tight end, Ogunniyi might find himself playing wide receiver at the Power Five level. His blocking ability is limited, and his strength is questionable, making him a better wide receiver. Regardless, Ogunniyi’s athleticism will be an offensive weapon for Rutgers football in the future.

The second player to commit to Rutgers’ class of 2024 is small forward Airious Bailey from McEachern High School in Powder Springs, GA. The 6-foot-9, five-star prospect is an offensive threat on the hardwood. He can handle the ball like a point guard with high basketball IQ. Bailey can pass the rock and is a solid shooter from behind the arc. With his long length, Bailey is a rim protector who can block shots on defense.

Film highlights: 2024 WR Isaiah Crumpler commits to Rutgers football

Rutgers football adds offensive weapon Isaiah Crumpler to their 2024 recruiting class. How can Crumpler’s skillset help the Scarlet Knights?

Last week, Rutgers football added an offensive weapon in Isaiah Crumpler, to their 2024 recruiting class. The three-star wide receiver is another significant commitment for the Scarlet Knights on offense, with a group that already includes running back Gabriel Winowich and tight ends Monte Keener and Matthew Ogunniyi as well as quarterback A.J. Surace to their 2024 recruiting class.

The North Carolina native from D. H. Conley High School in Greenville, N.C., committed to Rutgers on May 5th after receiving a Power Five offer from Duke. Crumpler recorded 55 catches for 614 yards and five touchdowns for the Vikings last season. Also, Crumpler logged 23 carries for 137 yards and three touchdowns in 2022.

[lawrence-related id=26471]

According to 247Sports, the 6-foot-1 180 pounds tight end is ranked No. 127 in the nation and the No. 27 recruit in North Carolina among his recruiting class. The 2024 prospect has a 5.5 rival rating and is the fifth-best recruit in North Carolina per On3 (No. 157 national rankings).

Film Analysis

Athleticism stats are according to Hudl.com:

40 Yard Dash Shuttle Vertical Bench Squats 400 Meter Dash 100 Meter Dash Clean
4.65 Seconds 4.06 Seconds 35 inches 225 Ibs. 340 Ibs. 50.41 Seconds 11.06 Seconds 260 Ibs.

Crumpler, brother of former NFL tight end Alge Crumpler, is a speedy breakaway wide receiver. Crumpler’s strength, elusiveness, and explosiveness are highly noticed throughout his highlight film. The 2024 prospect is deadly in the open field, outrunning many defenders. His shifty moves make him extremely difficult to tackle.

[lawrence-related id=26719]

Crumpler has excellent hands and can line up in the slot or out wide. He can run multiple route combinations, making him versatile in many offensive sets. The new Scarlet Knight can add depth to special teams with his experience returning punts and kicks. Crumpler should work on his route release as he develops into a Big Ten wide receiver. He tends to take a false step as he releases off the line of scrimmage.

Crumpler is the first wide receiver to join Rutgers’ 2024 recruiting class. According to 247Sports, the Scarlet Knights are now No. 26 in the 2024 overall recruiting rankings in the country.

Film Assessment: Did Rutgers recruit a sure-handed TE in Monte Keener?

Monte Keener committed to Rutgers football, adding another 2024 recruit. Did the Scarlet Knights recruit a sure-handed tight end in Keener?

Rutgers football received a commitment from tight end Monte Keener, adding another offensive addition to their 2024 recruiting class.

The 6-foot-6 215 pounds tight end is the second recruit from Michigan (running back Gabriel Winowich is the other) the Scarlet Knights snatched up deep in Big Ten territory. Michigan is not prime recruiting territory for Rutgers, but the Scarlet Knights are recruiting beyond their typical blueprint.

The three-star recruit from Linden High School (Linden, MI) had 22 receptions for 345 yards and two touchdowns last season for the Eagles. According to 247Sports, Keener is No. 72tight end in the nation and the No. 34 overall recruit in Michigan among his class. The 2024 prospect helped the Eagles to the Metro League championship game and the third round of the Division 3 playoffs.

[lawrence-related id=26471]

He received Power Five offers from Indiana and Minnesota and offers from several MAC programs (Buffalo, Miami (OH), Ball State, Central Michigan, Kent State, and Toledo). According to Rivals.com, the three-star recruit has a 5.5 rating.

Film Assessment

According to Keener’s Hudl profile, the junior tight end had the following athleticism stats:

40 Yard Dash Shuttle Vertical Bench Squats Deadlifts
4.79 Seconds 4.51 Seconds 30 inches 265 Ibs. 290 Ibs. 415 Ibs.

Keener is your typical Big Ten tight end, blocking and catching passes in high-traffic areas. He is not a burner but has a big frame for the tight-end position. The 2024 prospect is a solid route runner, using his strong hands when making catches in traffic. With the ball in his hands, he is hard to bring down, dragging defenders for extra yardage. Keener is willing to block when needed and can line up in the slot to catch passes.

As Keener develops into a Big Ten player, strength and blocking technique will be areas of development. Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano will get Keener into their strength and conditioning program to build his size while tight ends coach Andrew Aurich works on his blocking technique.
