Timur Khizriev unhappy with 2024 PFL 3 win, thinks Ramadan affected his performance

Despite defeating veteran Brett Johns, Timur Khizriev is disappointed by his performance at Friday’s 2024 PFL 3.

CHICAGO – [autotag]Timur Khizriev[/autotag] got the win and 3 points in the opening round of the 2024 PFL featherweight season, but he’s convinced there was room for much more.

Friday, Khizriev (15-0) defeated veteran Brett Johns in a unanimous decison on the preliminary card of PFL 2024, Week 3 at Wintrust Arena. Although it was a clean victory, Khizriev doesn’t think he performed at his best against Johns (20-4), and he has an idea as to why that happened.

“To be honest, I’m not fully happy with my performance,” Khizriev said in Russian through a translator in his post-fight interview. “Obviously, a win is a win, but I just feel like I wasn’t fully there. My normal energy wasn’t present, and I think it was partly because of Ramadan. I was fasting, and the last day was specially hard for me. Normally, I don’t have a problem with weight cutting and this time I had a little trouble, so I don’t think I was fully recovered.

“But again, we’re moving on, and hopefully the next fight will be more interesting.”

Johns chose a heavy grappling approach, something that didn’t surprise Khizriev. Khizriev just thought he would’ve been more dangerous on the ground when it came to grappling with Johns, which leaves him with a sour taste despite keeping his unbeaten record and moving on with three points to the final season bout.

“No, I was not surprised with him wrestling,” Khizriev said. “As a matter of fact, I felt that was the only chance he actually had. With striking, I think he realized he didn’t have a chance with me.

“I’m just not really happy with the way I was on the ground today, and I know he has wrestling. I know he has fought good guys like (Aljamain) Streling and you know, I was expecting that. But again, it wasn’t the best performance, but we’ll get another chance.”

Kai Kamaka III credits cousin Ray Cooper III for big-time PFL influence

Kai Kamaka III got tossed into the deep end of the pool for his PFL debut Friday, but had a confidence boost thanks a family bond.

CHICAGO – [autotag]Kai Kamaka III[/autotag] got tossed into the deep end of the pool for his PFL debut Friday, but had a confidence boost thanks a family bond.

Kamaka (13-5-1) outworked Bubba Jenkins (21-8) for a unanimous decision at the PFL’s third and final event of the first half of the 2024 regular season in Chicago. The win gave Kamaka 3 points in the featherweight standings.

After the fight, Kamaka, a Bellator transfer from Hawaii who now has won four of his past five, said advice from his cousin, [autotag]Ray Cooper III[/autotag], helped ahead of his PFL debut. Cooper is a two-time $1 million PFL winner at welterweight.

“I was kind of teary-eyed this morning,” Kamaka told MMA Junkie and other reporters after his win over Jenkins. “My cousin Ray surprised me for my fight, and then locking eyes with him right before the fight started – I mean, just full circle. Five years ago, I was following him around this league from the East Coast.

“I wish we both could have been competing tonight, but I think it was more of a blessing that he wasn’t because I think I would have been even more nervous. But to see him today, and then during the fight, him giving me assurance, he lit more of a fire under me, especially between that second and third round, seeing him standing up and then, you know, locking eyes with him again – he just brings a different fire to me.”

Kamaka’s 3 points in the featherweight standings have him in a three-way tie behind Brendan Loughnane and Gabriel Braga, who got first-round finishes for 6 points.

A win for Kamaka against whoever he’s matched up against in the second round in late June will be critical to make the four-man postseason, and a finish might be even more important, though the 29-year-old said he’s just concerned about getting a ‘W’ and not gunning for a finish.

“The season picks up from here,” Kamaka said. “It’s whoever can stay healthy, whoever can have the strong mind and keep going. But I don’t have bad weight cuts. I don’t need too much time to rest. I heal my body up good and I’m a student of the game. The tournament picks up now.

“I’m just trying to frickin’ win fights. I keep winning, you move on. The win, then the finish, that’s all for PFL – but I’ve got to make my money and I’ve got to keep winning.”

Welterweights fought on the card with Kamaka’s featherweight division Friday at Wintrust Arena, but Cooper wasn’t in the field. He won the welterweight season in 2019, then again in 2021. In 2022, he missed weight for his first bout of the season and despite a 24-second KO in his second fight, missed the playoffs.

Cooper moved up to middleweight in 2023, but dropped a decision to UFC vet Derek Brunson, and against Bellator welterweight champion Jason Jackson earlier this year, he lost a catchweight fight. But despite his current hurdles, Cooper remains a steadfast influence in Kamaka’s career.

“He was there in my UFC debut,” Kamaka said. “He probably pulled me through to that one, too. The turning points in my career, if it wasn’t for him doing so well in the PFL, I don’t even think I’d be anywhere in my career.

“After he was doing well, he won the championship, that’s when my career started to come around because during his camps, I’m right there with him on everything. Seeing him win, I knew I was doing everything right, and that helped turn my career around. That just pushed me. That just gave me assurance that I was doing the right things.”

PFL’s Gabriel Braga reflects on first win since father’s death: ‘In leaving us, he left me very ready’

2024 PFL 3 was an emotional night for Gabriel Braga, who fought victoriously for the first time since his father’s death.

CHICAGO – With a heavy heart, [autotag]Gabriel Braga[/autotag] entered the cage for the first time since his father’s death.

At 2024 PFL 3, Braga (13-1) began his featherweight season with a bout against Justin Gonzales. With one second left on the clock in Round 1, Braga prompted the referee to stop the fight after landing a series of hard punches that sent Gonzales (14-4) to the ground.

Braga dropped to his knees in the center of the cage, letting the emotions of the entire moment take over as he lifted both hands toward the sky.

“He left us, but in leaving us, he left me very ready,” Braga said about his father through an interpreter during a post-fight news conference. “Ready for these moments, ready to make him proud, and ready to conquer the world, so that’s what I’m here to do.”

Braga’s father, Diego, was killed in January in Brazil. A drug gang reportedly murdered him as they searched for a stolen motorcycle.

While working through the pain of losing a parent, Braga’s circle helped keep a smile on his face. He continued training to prepare for this PFL season, which he intends to win.

“I’m here to be a champion,” Braga said. “Last year, I feel like I conquered a lot of space within the organization. I proved my worth, but this year I’m here to be champion.”

PFL’s Shamil Musaev reflects on upset of Logan Storley: ‘A bad day for him and a good day for me’

Shamil Musaev became the first to stop Logan Storley, scoring an upset victory at 2024 PFL 3 in Chicago.

CHICAGO – Oddsmakers didn’t favor [autotag]Shamil Musaev[/autotag] to get the job done against Logan Storley at 2024 PFL 3, but the Russian welterweight is likely to find himself as a favorite for the remainder of the season.

In a matchup between PFL debuting fighters, Musaev (17-0-1 MMA, 1-0 PFL) became the first to stop former interm Bellator champ Storley (15-3 MMA, 0-1 PFL) by landing heavy punches. Musaev had Storley in danger late in the first round, and continued his momentum to get the finish just 27 seconds into Round 2.

“Some people had me as the underdog. I don’t know, maybe they didn’t do enough research,” Musaev told reporters during a post-fight news conference.

Musaev kept his unbeaten record intact and claimed five points, good enough for the current No. 3 spot in the welterweight regular season standings behind six-point earners Don Madge and Murad Ramazanov.

Musaev knows more work is ahead to get through the season, and isn’t putting too much stock into the result of the fight against Storley.

“I guess it was just a bad day for him and a good day for me,” Musaev said about Storley. “I landed perfectly.”

PFL’s Pedro Carvalho upset by stoppage in Brendan Loughnane loss, claims referee admitted wrong call

Pedro Carvalho doesn’t agree with the stoppage in his TKO loss at Friday’s 2024 PFL 3.

[autotag]Pedro Carvalho[/autotag] is far from happy with how his PFL debut went.

The Bellator veteran lost by first-round TKO to [autotag]Brendan Loughnane[/autotag] in the co-main event of Friday’s 2024 PFL 3 event. Carvalho (13-9) was hurt early by Loughnane (28-5), but was fighting back. In the final sequence, Loughnane connected with a shot on a downed Carvalho, and referee Kevin MacDonald waved off the fight as Carvalho was looking for a takedown. Carvalho stood up immediately and protested the call.

The SBG Ireland product is upset with the call and said that McDonald admitted he made the wrong call. No official statement was made by MacDonald.

“An amazing week and experience with (PFL) that end up with a very sour taste in my mouth for something that I thought it would never happen to me and one of the worst stoppages that I have ever seen,” Carvalho wrote on Instagram. “I respect referee Kevin MacDonald specially for being a honorable man and came to me after the fight apologizing and admitting that he messed that one up.

“It really hurts, specially now with this point system the chances are very thin for me to reach the playoffs, but I’m still gonna find a way out of this.
I’m just gonna try to focus on how grateful I feel for being able to be living what I dreamed to be, doing what I always dreamed when I was a kid.
I’m gonna keep the work and focus going and hope that the outcome of my next fight will depend only on me… Thank you everyone for your support, it means a lot!! ❤️”

Carvalho is now on a three-fight losing streak. He has zero points in the PFL 2024 featherweight season and one fight remaining to look to qualify for the playoffs. Meanwhile, Loughnane scored six points with the first-round finish, getting closer to qualifying for the playoffs.

Loughnane also weighed in on the stoppage and said the opposite of Carvalho. He believes Carvalho was badly hurt and that MacDonald made the right call.

Goiti Yamauchi relieved by PFL debut win in return from MVP knee injury: ‘This is a fight that I needed’

Goiti Yamauchi reflects on his unanimous decision win over Neiman Gracie at Friday’s PFL 2024, Week 3.

CHICAGO – He did not get a stoppage, but for [autotag]Goiti Yamauchi[/autotag], his PFL debut win was everything he wanted.

Yamauchi, a long-time Bellator contender, made his PFL debut this Friday, defeating Neiman Gracie in a rematch as part of the opening bouts of the welterweight season at 2024 PFL 3. Yamauchi (29-6) beat Gracie (12-5) by unanimous decision, earning him three points in the season.

Some may see the win as not the best-case scenario, given that a finish would’ve awarded Yamauchi more points, but it was perfect for Yamauchi.

“Wow, it was really good to be back,”  Yamauchi said in his post-fight interview. “This is a fight that I needed, the kind of win that was really good for me, and to be back in the cage and get this win after this serious injury. I couldn’t have asked for a better result tonight, and I’m really happy.”

This was Yamauchi’s first fight since suffering that wild knee injury in his TKO loss to Michael Page in March 2023. It was one of the most bizarre and worst injuries seen in MMA that year.

Looking to make it to the 2024 PFL welterweight final to get a chance to become champion and win the $1 million prize, Yamauchi’s main focus is winning, but also staying injury-free in the process. That’s why he’s very happy with his showing against Gracie.

“You have to take a new approach and a new strategy because it’s all about being healthy till the end of the tournament,” Yamauchi explained. “Of course, we wanted the six points, but it’s hard to deal with this new thing in the PFL. Sometimes you get a tougher opponent or someone who’s hard to finish, like Neiman. Neiman is so hard to finish. Nobody but me has finished him. Neiman is a tough guy, and it’s hard to finish him, but thank God I could get the win.”

Gegard Mousasi’s manager responds to PFL president Ray Sefo: ‘They’re not making a meaningful effort’

Gegard Mousasi and the PFL have not been on the same page since the promotion acquired Bellator.

[autotag]Gegard Mousasi[/autotag] and his team feel they are not a priority for the PFL.

Since the promotion acquired Bellator, the former champ Mousasi has not been booked for a fight. His last appearance was 11 months ago, which has caused frustration to build.

According to PFL president Ray Sefo, Mousasi has been offered at least one fight, and is unsure when communication broke down between both sides. However, Mousasi turned down the fight, because the fighter and his team did not consider it a “real offer” because it was at a higher weight class on six week’s notice.

Mousasi’s manager, Nima Safapour, told MMA Junkie they have been willing to work out terms for a return to action, but believe the promotion has put Mousasi on the backburner.

“Let me start off by saying I like Ray Sefo, and have always considered him a good friend. Sincerely,” Safapour told MMA Junkie. “With that being said, since when is offering fights outside a fighter’s weight category a real offer? Jon Jones spent one year bulking up to fight at HW. However, Gegard should assume that the only way he can get a fight is by going up a weight class on 6 weeks notice? A real offer is offering a fight to someone in their actual weight division.

“We asked for Ray Cooper and they told us he was not available. And then a few weeks later they booked Ray on the same event we asked to fight him on. So in reality, it feels that it’s not a priority and they’re not making a meaningful effort. And when fighters fall off of a card, the guys that we asked to fight (and were told were unavailable) get the call, but we don’t . And it’s not reasonable to marinate any fighter on the sidelines for a year and a half because they would not agree to an unfair weight handicap on short notice.”

Safapour continued:

“Ironically, Gegard is such a gangster that he told them that he would fight at 205 for the PFL season tournament if that would give us more options. At least that would give Gegard a few months to bulk up. Not ideal, but we are willing to do it to compromise and create opportunities for everyone . But we got no response from them.

“It’s very simple: At the beginning of the year, we asked to sit down and to map out how they are going to use Gegard in 2024. If it was a priority for them, they would have done it. When they wanted to schedule a short notice fight for Patricio ‘Pitbull,’ they did so. So it really comes down to if they want to do it or not. So, from an outsider looking in, it surely doesn’t feel like a priority for them at Gegard’s detriment.”

While the two sides have been going back-and-forth in the media, Safapour says it would make no difference if everything was kept behind closed doors, because the conversations about Mousasi, 38, have been the same.

“If they intend on using Gegard, then why don’t they ever say his name publicly especially when they’re promoting their upcoming events in Riyadh for their pay-per-view?” Safapour said. “I can only base my assumptions off of their actions. And at this point, unfortunately, their actions sound very different than what they’re saying to us behind closed doors and publicly.

“No one who understands the sport can deny that Gegard is one of the best middleweights of all time. He has earned his right to fight, and he has a binding contract with Bellator. I hope they can turn it around and behave reasonably and ethically because Gegard can make a fantastic contribution to the platform, which is all he’s ever wanted to do.”

Magomed Umalatov happy to defeat Russian ‘legend’ Andrey Koreshkov, vows PFL ‘takeover’

Magomed Umalatov looks to run the PFL’s welterweight division after picking up a big win over former Bellator champ Andrey Koreshkov.

CHICAGO – [autotag]Magomed Umalatov[/autotag] didn’t walk away from a big win over Andrey Koreshkov unscathed, but is happy with the end result.

In the 2024 PFL 3 main event, Umalatov (15-0 MMA, 6-0 PFL) kept his unbeaten record intact by picking up a unanimous decision win over Koreshkov (27-5 MMA, 0-1 PFL), earning three points in the welterweight standings.

The fight meant more to Umalatov than just getting his hand raised, as he added a name to his resume that he has looked up to throughout his career.

“He’s a famous guy in Russia, a former Bellator champion,” Umalatov told reporters during a post-fight news conference. “Even me, when I was amateur, I was watching his fights. He’s a legend and I’m happy to beat him today. After this fight, I will be more confident. I’m 15-0, undefeated. I beat a very strong guy, and I’m just (looking) forward.”

Don Madge and Murad Ramazanov both picked up first-round finishes worth six points, while Shamil Musaev earned five for his second-round stoppage. Umalatov has three points along with Goiti Yamauchi, which will make for a tight race in the second round of fights in June.

Umalatov came out of the fight with damage to his right arm, as he held an ice pack to his limb while fielding questions to reporters. He did not seem too concerned with the injury, however, as he delivered a haunting message to future opponents this season:

“Just be ready, I’m coming for takeover.”

PFL president Ray Sefo addresses Gegard Mousasi’s frustration, unsure of communication breakdown

Gegard Mousasi has yet to compete since the PFL’s acquisition of Bellator, but PFL president Ray Sefo says he has been offered a fight.

CHICAGO – PFL president [autotag]Ray Sefo[/autotag] isn’t sure where the communication breakdown occurred with [autotag]Gegard Mousasi[/autotag] but assures that the promotion wants to have him compete soon.

Mousasi (49-9-2), hasn’t competed since last May in a unanimous decision loss to Fabian Edwards at Bellator 296. The former Bellator and Strikeforce champion recently told MMA Junkie that he is frustrated with his current situation after PFL acquired Bellator, since he has yet to compete and does not have a fight scheduled.

“I’ve been training in and out a little bit because I don’t get any news from the PFL or Bellator – people think I’m retired, actually,” Mousasi told MMA Junkie. “I’m waiting for a fight. I have a contract with them but it feels like they don’t feel obligated to the contract.”

Following 2024 PFL 3, Sefo addressed Mousasi’s comments, stating that Mousasi has been offered at least one fight in the light heavyweight division.

“When I first talked to his manager about it, I had an offer for him to fight at 205, and he turned it down,” Sefo told reporters during a post-event news conference. “I don’t know where that miscommunication was, but they asked for certain people, and those people weren’t on the card, and then of course, as any card goes along, you match it today, and hope for the best that nobody gets injured.

“Throughout that champions vs. champions, I think we had like three or four guys fall out due to injuries and whatnot. Certain things had to happen, and we had to pull certain people in. But yeah, an offer was offered to his manager from me and they turned it down. He said, ‘No.'”

Mousasi, 38, also stated that PFL has not responded to his manager’s efforts to contact him about booking a fight, describing it as “radio silence.” He also felt that he has been pressured to “take a pay cut” in order to compete.

“The problem is my manager tried to contact them and they don’t even respond,” Mousasi said. “There’s no effort to promote or get me a fight. It’s radio silence with them. People think I’m retired. They’re trying to be No. 2 organization in the world, but I think at least what they can do is tell me what their plans are with me.”

[lawrence-related id=2705496,2642269,2735146]

While Sefo did not address Mousasi’s comment about pay, he says the PFL intends to have Mousasi fight for the promotion this year. However, details need to be ironed out to create something that makes sense for all parties involved.

“Yeah, absolutely,” Sefo said when asked if the promotion wants Mousasi to compete. “It’s just we got to sit down and work out what makes sense and go from there.”

PFL’s Brendan Loughnane refutes TKO controversy vs. Pedro Carvalho: ‘Should’ve been stopped earlier’

Brendan Loughnane doesn’t think the stoppage in his TKO win over Pedro Carvalho was premature.

CHICAGO – [autotag]Brendan Loughnane[/autotag] was puzzled to see there was controversy surrounding his latest win, as he thought it was a clean one.

The 2022 PFL featherweight champion picked up a first-round TKO win over [autotag]Pedro Carvalho[/autotag] in the co-main event of Friday’s 2024 PFL 3 event. Many online criticized the stoppage, calling it premature, as Carvalho (13-9), who had been stunned a couple of times, looked to be going for a takedown when the fight was stopped. He also stood up immediately and seemed unhappy with the call.

Loughnane (28-5) is convinced the referee made the right move.

“That was the best stoppage ever,” Loughnane said in his post-fight interview. “Me, that referee, and Pedro are the three people in there. Pedro was done. I’m so glad he stopped it when he did because, listen, we all want to get paid and go to our families. It was a great stoppage.”

It wasn’t just online where people were criticizing the call. Loughnane got heavily booed by the Chicago crowd for his win, something that completely caught him off guard.

“I’ll be honest with you, I thought, ‘Is there 5,000 Pedro fans in here?” Loughnane said. “I couldn’t work out what all the boos were because it was a great stoppage. I’m not joking. I was in there. I saw his eyes. Pedro was done. It should’ve been stopped earlier. Like, I don’t know what all the boos were about, honestly. Even when he stood up he was done, he was gone. It was a great stoppage.”
