Oddsmakers believe Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has a decent chance of winning the MVP award next season.

Herbert has the sixth-highest MVP odds at +1400; a $100 bet would win $1,400. He is right below Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes (+600), Bills’ Josh Allen (+800), Bengals’ Joe Burrow (+900), Texans’ CJ Stroud (+1100) and Ravens’ Lamar Jackson (+1200), per BetMGM.

After getting a massive payday last offseason, Herbert’s campaign wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows as he dealt with injuries to both hands, with a fractured index on his right hand ending his season early.

In 13 games, Herbert had a 65.1 percent completion rate for 3,134 yards, 20 touchdowns and seven interceptions to go with 52 carries for 228 yards and three more scores.

Looking ahead to this season, Herbert will be playing in yet another offensive system, going from Kellen Moore to Greg Roman.

Roman is expected to come in and improve the run game, which should take some pressure off Herbert and allow for more designed carries for him. A good rushing attack should lead to more deep passes through play action, where he should thrive with his big arm.

Look for Herbert to have a bounce-back season in 2024, and potentially make a case for the league’s most valuable player.

Broncos among candidates to play in NFL’s 2024 season opener

The Broncos are among eight candidates to face the Chiefs in the NFL’s 2024 season opener.

As the defending Super Bowl champions from the 2023 season, the Kansas City Chiefs are now set to host the NFL’s season opener in 2024.

The Chiefs’ list of eight home opponents in 2024 obviously includes the AFC West. That puts the Denver Broncos among the candidates to travel to Kansas City in Week 1.

The Broncos just snapped a 16-game losing streak to the Chiefs last season, defeating their division rival 24-9 in late October. But the NFL will probably view other opponents on KC’s schedule as more intriguing candidates for the opener.

In addition to the Justin Herbert-led Los Angeles Chargers, the Chiefs will also host teams including the Baltimore Ravens (and 2023 NFL MVP Lamar Jackson), the Houston Texans (and young star C.J. Stroud), and the Cincinnati Bengals (and Joe Burrow) in 2024. Burrow is 3-1 against Kansas City in his career, including a 1-1 record in the playoffs.

Russell Wilson is facing an uncertain future in Denver and the Broncos are unlikely to have a QB matchup more intriguing than Jackson, Burrow or Stroud to face off against Mahomes in Week 1. Denver is a candidate for the opener, but probably not a favorite. Here’s the full list of teams the Chiefs are set to host during the 2024 NFL season.

Commanders’ HC Dan Quinn looking to lead and find team leaders

Dan Quinn knows the importance of teamwork.

Quinn, as a guest on the “Chris Russell Show” (The Team 980) Thursday afternoon, conveyed to Russell he has been on 70 teams in his lifetime. “That feeling of accomplishing things together, that is what I love the most,” said Quinn.

“Who do I keep up with, my old teammates. Those are the guys you fought with, bled with, went through struggles with, and success with. Those are the people I connected with most early. It is still the case today, whether I was coaching college ball or pro ball hearing from people maybe you’ve not spoken with in a long time. You can step into those conversations so quickly, so easily that, to me, is why I love coaching (most), the people you get to do it with. It lights me up.”

Much has been said this week about Quinn being a good leader of men, of teams. So Russell asked directly, “Where does that leadership come from?” Quinn responded, “I’ll set the course, trust me I will. But we will be really, really good when we are excellent in the locker room first…The way we push one another and lead one another that’s when you can become excellent.”

Quinn told Russell there are always times on a team when no one is leading an area and that you need guys who will thus say it is their time to take on some leadership because it is needed. “You do have to be ready when your number is called to say ‘This is my time, I will take it. I will lead the way here.'”

“When you have a number of people that push really high standards, then you can do some special stuff.”

Quinn is fully aware that everything hinges on leadership. He will set the bar high and seek out others to join him and lead others in the organization.

The Washington Commanders look a lot different now than they did one month ago. Sure, the roster hasn’t changed yet, but beginning with new general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn, Washington’s vision is beginning to take shape.

The day after Quinn’s hiring became official, we learned who would lead the Commanders’ offense and defense. Washington hired former Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury as offensive coordinator, while Joe Whitt Jr. followed Quinn from Dallas to be his defensive coordinator.

Quinn’s coordinator hirings drew praise from around the league.

The Dallas Cowboys are going to have to play the waiting game when it comes to their 2023 draft class. Things didn’t go according to plan with the group, as there was little initial impact from the group of youngsters, which has not been the norm with the club under Will McClay. It was all good the year prior, as the Cowboys have been getting plenty of contributions from the previous haul.

Dallas hit big time in the 2022 draft, and are starting to see the fruits of their labor. With multiple key contributors, some even high-end starters, this class is poised to be central to future championship pushes. Here are the four most important third-year players to watch in 2024.

Commanders DE K.J. Henry named an early 2024 breakout player

The Washington Commanders have some holes to fill in 2024. The good news for incoming general manager Adam Peters is the Commanders have plenty of salary cap room and some premium draft picks to fill those holes.

While much of the offseason talk surrounding Washington will be on the quarterback position, the Commanders need plenty of help on defense. Washington was terrible defensively in 2023, and the new coaching staff will need to find some pass-rush help.

Perhaps some of that help is already on the roster. K.J. Henry was a fifth-round pick from Clemson in 2023. When the Commanders traded Montez Sweat and Chase Young at the NFL trade deadline in October, Henry’s role increased.

Overall, Henry would play in 10 games as a rookie, including making three starts. He finished his first season with 19 tackles, including four for loss, 1.5 sacks and two quarterback hits.

Could Henry contend for a starting position in 2024?

Pro Football Focus recently named one early breakout candidate for next season, and Henry was that player for Washington.

The Commanders traded away Chase Young and Montez Sweat mid-season, and they are slated to lose both Casey Toohill and James Smith-Williams to free agency, leaving a once stellar edge group rather barren. Henry — a fifth-round pick out of Clemson — will be one of the remaining names this offseason and while he didn’t get a ton of opportunity as a rookie, his final year at Clemson was encouraging, where he posted an 84.0 pass-rush grade, 53 pressures and five sacks. Henry could be called upon to play a much larger role in 2024 for the Commanders.

After a strong 2022 class that saw multiple draftees take starting roles, the Dallas Cowboys’ 2023 class left a lot to be desired. Injuries, questionable development strategies and a flurry of other miscellaneous setbacks have lined this crop of players as ones to forget, but thankfully, time is on their side.

Dallas is facing an offseason filled with tough decisions, and because defections are inevitable, success will require younger players to step up. The pressure is on the 2023 class. Here are the four most important second-year names to watch in the 2024 season.

One year ago, the Washington Commanders had a massive decision: Whether or not to pick up defensive end Chase Young’s fifth-year option for 2024.

That notion seemed silly at one time, but injuries and a lack of production made Washington’s decision a relatively easy one. The Commanders declined Young’s fifth-year option and traded him during the season to the San Francisco 49ers for a 2024 third-round draft pick.

This year, new general manager Adam Peters has another decision to make. This time, it’s regarding 2021 first-round pick Jamin Davis. It’s safe to say Peters likely will not struggle with that decision.

Through three seasons, Davis has played in 45 games with 36 starts and recorded 269 tackles, including 20 for loss, 10 QB hits, seven sacks, two forced fumbles, and one interception. Davis struggled as a rookie when Washington selected him to play Mike linebacker. However, it didn’t take long for the Commanders to move him back outside, and he showed improvement.

Davis had his best season in 2023 before a shoulder injury ended his campaign after 13 games.

NFL.com recently examined all 32 first-round picks from the 2021 NFL draft and predicted whether their fifth-year option would be exercised.

Here’s what was said about Davis:

Exercise the option? No.

I loved Davis coming out of Kentucky and thought he’d be a huge contributor behind a once-stacked Commanders defensive line. But that never came to fruition, and he is currently recovering from season-ending shoulder surgery. Plus, with Washington bringing in a new regime this offseason, the team is most likely to let Davis play out his fourth season before re-evaluating whether it wants to keep the former first-rounder for 2025 and beyond.

We agree. While Davis has shown flashes and improved each season, the bar has been lowered. Peters has drafted some good linebackers in his previous stops, so Davis can play himself into Washington’s future plans with a strong 2024 season.

It will be interesting to see Davis play for a new defensive staff.
