Raiders trade QB Nick Mullens to Vikings for conditional draft pick

The Las Vegas Raiders have traded quarterback Nick Mullens to the Minnesota Vikings for a conditional pick in the 2024 NFL draft

The Las Vegas Raiders have traded quarterback Nick Mullens to the Las Vegas Raiders for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

Mullens, 27, played his first three NFL seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, before spending the 2021 campaign with the Cleveland Browns. He’s appeared in 20 career games, with 17 starts, tallying 4,861 passing yards, 26 touchdown passes and 22 interceptions.

The only condition of the trade is that Mullens is active for at least one game in 2022, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Mullens has the most career passing yards of any quarterback in NFL history who has only 20 or fewer games played, and it’s not terribly close (via The Athletic’s Greg Auman):

Nick Caserio could use 2024 to turn the Texans into contenders

Houston Texans general manager will probably rebuild the team over 2023. However, 2024 represents an opportunity to turn the team into contenders.

Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio has been adept at turning nothing into something with the haul of draft picks the club has through the 2024 NFL draft.

Forget 2023 — the year after that has great draft capital as Houston will have two first-round picks, four top-100 selections, and a total of 10 selections for the draft, which will be held in Detroit.

The Texans entered the 2022 draft with the most selections with 13. However, Caserio managed to build packages with the picks to take nine players to infuse talent into the roster.

If Caserio already has 10 draft picks lined up for a draft that won’t even take place until two years from now, who knows how much more capital he will assemble?

The 2024 draft picks also are a chance for Houston to launch themselves into the contender category. Presumably the Texans should be able to complete the rebuild by the end of the 2023 season.

Just as Caserio is able to build packages to take specific draft prospects, he can use the 2024 picks to target specific veterans who could elevate the roster. If a salary cap-strapped team knows they can’t afford to pay their All-Pro talent, who may be in the final year of his contract, Caserio will have the picks and the cap space to acquire the veteran and give Houston another shot in the arm.

Coach Lovie Smith and the coaching staff have been citing the Cincinnati Bengals as the model for a quick turnaround, but even their success was attributed to doing it the Los Angeles Rams’ way: acquiring proven veteran talent. Homegrown talent can only carry a team so far. At some point, the front office has to take a chance and bring proven veteran talent to the roster to push the team over the top.

The Texans, thanks to Caserio’s draft-pick-flipping, will be able to target proven veterans in 2024.

Texans trade DB Lonnie Johnson Jr. to Chiefs for draft pick

The Houston Texans have traded defensive back Lonnie Johnson Jr. to the Kansas City Chiefs for a conditional draft pick in 2024

The Houston Texans have traded defensive back Lonnie Johnson Jr. to the Kansas City chiefs for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft, per multiple reports.

A second-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft out of Kentucky, Johnson appeared in 44 games for the Texans over the past three seasons, making 19 starts. All three interceptions of his career came last season, along with six of his 13 pass breakups.

He now joins a Chiefs defense that desperately needs to improve in the secondary, giving him a promising opportunity to contribute to a potential Super Bowl contender.

Detroit will host the 2024 NFL draft

Detroit won the right to host the 2024 NFL draft

On the same day where the Detroit Lions were chosen as the subject for the 2022 season of Hard Knocks, the team also won the competition to host the 2024 NFL draft.

The NFL announced the decision during the annual owner’s meeting in Palm Beach. Detroit was previously known as one of three finalists to host the draft, which has rotated around various cities since leaving the longtime home in New York City for the 2015 event.

The 2022 draft will take place next month in Las Vegas. Kansas City previously was announced as the host of the 2023 draft.

Exact logistical details are not yet solidified, but early indications are the draft itself will be held outdoors at Campus Emeritus Park.

Vikings NFC North rival officially hosting 2024 NFL Draft

The NFL Draft is coming to the NFC North in 2024

The Minnesota Vikings won’t have far to travel in 2024 with Detroit being officially named as the city to host the NFL Draft that year, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

In the end, it came down to Detroit, Green Bay and Washington as the finalists to host the annual event. And, for the first time ever, Detroit was selected as the city to host two years from now.

The Vikings reportedly applied to host in 2024 as well. They’ve also applied for 2025, 2026 and 2027. So perhaps better luck will be down the road for Minnesota to make history.

It has been a big day for the city of Detroit not only receiving an opportunity to host the draft, but the Lions will also be the starring team on HBO’s “Hard Knocks” as well.

They might have finished dead last in the NFC North for the last four straight seasons, but you can’t say nothing exciting is happening in Detroit.

Detroit beats out Green Bay to host 2024 NFL draft

Detroit will host the 2024 NFL draft. Green Bay was one of the finalists.

The city of Green Bay won’t be hosting the 2024 NFL draft.

On Monday, the NFL awarded hosting rights in 2024 to the city of Detroit. Green Bay and Washington D.C. were the two other finalists.

In a statement released Monday, team president Mark Murphy said the franchise and city “remain optimistic” about hosting the draft in “the near future.”

Murphy announced the city was a finalist earlier this year. He said he planned to hear a decision by the NFL owners meetings, which began this week.

The Packers have played a big role in building up the areas around Lambeau Field in hopes of hosting an event like the draft.

In previous years, the draft was held Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, Nashville and Cleveland.

Washington one of 3 cities in contention to host NFL draft in 2024

Could Washington host the 2024 NFL draft?

Could the Washington Commanders soon be hosting an NFL draft? According to former Washington player and current Green Bay Packers president, Mark Murphy, Washington is one of three finalists to host the most popular NFL offseason event in 2024.

Murphy told Rachel Hopmayer of NBC 26 in Green Bay Monday that Washington, Green Bay and Detroit were the three finalists to host the 2024 NFL draft.

While the Commanders would likely not host the event at FedEx Field, which is in Landover, Maryland, the NFL would likely hold the event somewhere inside of Washington, D.C., but the Commanders would be the host city.

The NFL is expected to make a final decision by the end of March. The league’s annual spring meeting is scheduled for March 27-30.

Las Vegas will host the 2022 NFL draft and Kansas City will host the 2023 NFL draft.

Green Bay is probably considered the favorite to host the 2024 event. However, Washington is the nation’s capital and the Commanders should know where their new stadium will be by 2024. If it’s Washington, the District would be the perfect candidate to host the event.

Regardless of the venue, the on-location drafts have been a smashing success thus far for the host cities.

Detroit one of 3 finalists to host the 2024 NFL draft

Detroit joins Green Bay and Washington as finalists to host the 2024 NFL draft event

Could the 2024 NFL draft really be heading to Detroit? The team president of one of the Lions’ NFC North rivals provided some optimistic insight on that possibility.

In a pre-combine conference call with reporters, Green Bay Packers team president Mark Murphy dropped info that there are three finalist cities being considered to host the 2024 draft. Detroit is one of those three, along with Green Bay and Washington. The league is expected to announce the winning city during the owner’s meetings later this offseason.

Detroit has been attempting to land the draft for several years, applying to host the rotating event as early as 2017. This year’s draft will be in Las Vegas, following last year’s blustery draft in Cleveland. The 2023 NFL draft will be in Kansas City.
