2024 mock draft: Rams miss out on QBs but land top edge rusher

In this 2024 mock draft, the Rams don’t land Caleb Williams or Drake Maye, but they do select the top edge rusher

No matter what happens this season for the Rams, they’re going to have a lot of roster holes to fill next offseason. Similar to the draft this year, they could be looking for help at every single position.

The 2024 NFL draft is still 10 months away, but it’s fun to look at which prospects are projected to go early in Round 1, especially knowing the Rams could very well be picking near the top.

In ESPN’s latest mock draft from Jordan Reid, the Rams pick fifth overall and miss out on the premier quarterback prospects, Caleb Williams and Drake Maye. Blue-chip receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. also went before the Rams were up in this mock draft, as did offensive tackle Olumuyiwa Fashanu.

So at No. 5 overall, the Rams select the top edge rusher: Jared Verse out of Florida State.

The Rams’ roster is undergoing a youth movement in multiple spots, and they are in dire need of playmakers at edge rusher. Verse is a heavy-handed and active rusher, and after transferring from Albany, he quickly became the centerpiece of the Seminoles’ 2022 defense. He created pressure on 17.1% of his defensive snaps and recorded nine sacks last season. Verse is a contender to be the first defensive player off the board.

Verse only has one year of starting experience but he absolutely made it count in 2022 with 17 tackles for a loss and nine sacks, totaling 48 tackles in the 12 games that he did play. He has the perfect size to play outside linebacker in the Rams’ scheme, standing 6-foot-4 and 253 pounds, paired with impressive athleticism off the edge.

The Rams don’t have a single edge rusher on the roster right now who can even be penciled in as a starter next season, so they’re going to need all the help they can get at that position. Verse would be a fantastic short-term and long-term addition to the defense in 2024 and beyond.

New 2024 mock draft projects a different draft order than normal

Most 2024 mock drafts use Super Bowl or win total odds to project the order, but the latest from Pro Football Network changes it up

Typically, offseason mock drafts use the Super Bowl odds for the following season to project the draft order. It’s a safe way to not ruffle any feathers amongst fanbases who get projected near the top of the draft.

So when we get a mock draft that doesn’t use the Super Bowl odds or projected win total odds (another common determinant), it’s worth noting. Kudos to Dalton Miller of Pro Football Network for going on a limb and projecting the season’s outcome by going through every 2024 regular season game on his own and projecting winners and losers.

The draft order is based on personalized season predictions. Every NFL game was picked to make the order. And while things will undoubtedly change as the season progresses, some teams are already at a disadvantage for the 2023 NFL season.

Miller’s resulting draft order looks more than a little different from the typical odds-based mocks. The divergence starts at the top. PFN projects the Los Angeles Rams to earn the No. 1 overall pick. Normally the Rams are slotted in the 6-7 overall range. The Rams stay local and select USC QB Caleb Williams with the top pick in the projection.

The Arizona Cardinals remain at No. 2 as they do in other projections, with Ohio State wideout Marvin Harrison Jr. getting the early nod. The rest of the top 10 in PFN’s mock:

3. Las Vegas Raiders: Drake Maye, QB, North Carolina

4. Atlanta Falcons: Dallas Turner, EDGE, Alabama

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Brock Bowers, TE, Georgia

6. Green Bay Packers: Joe Alt, OT, Notre Dame

7. Tennessee Titans: Olu Fashanu, OT, Penn State

8. Indianapolis Colts: Emeka Egbuka, WR, Ohio State

9. Houston Texans: Jared Verse, EDGE, Florida State

10. Chicago Bears: Kool-Aid McKinstry, CB, Alabama

The Rams, Packers, Titans and Colts don’t typically project to pick as high as they’re shown here. It’s a fun shakeup to the preseason norms.

Breaking down Chiefs’ pick in Draft Wire’s way-too-early 2024 mock draft

Who did the #Chiefs get in @TheDraftWire’s way-too-early 2024 mock draft? We break it down here:

It hasn’t even been a full 24 hours since the conclusion of the 2023 NFL draft and our friend Curt Popejoy over at Draft Wire already has turned the chapter to 2024.

In his way-too-early first-round 2024 mock draft, Popejoy sends the Chiefs Ohio State S Josh Proctor. He returned to Ohio State as a fifth-year senior in 2023 due to the NCAA’s COVID-eligibility rules. Listed at 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds, he has the ideal size to play the position in the NFL.

In 2022, he appeared in 11 games with the Buckeyes, recording 21 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, a sack and two passes defended. He’ll have to take a big leap in his production in 2023 in order to be considered a first-round pick. He certainly has the measurables and he has some moments on tape like this:

I’d be surprised if the Chiefs ended up going with a safety in the first round in the 2024 NFL draft. It’d almost certainly mean that they opted to use the out year in Justin Reid’s three-year contract or that a player like Bryan Cook has failed to take a second-year leap. Mike Edwards is slated to be a free agent in 2024, but the Chiefs also traded up in Round 4 of the 2023 NFL draft to select a versatile DB in Chamarri Conner.

Bo Nix leads group of Ducks to stack first two rounds of 2024 NFL mock draft

Bo Nix leads a group of 5 Ducks projected to be drafted in the first two rounds of the 2024 NFL Draft.

The 2023 NFL draft has yet to happen and there are already some mock drafts out there projecting the 2024 selections.

As far as next year’s draft is concerned, Duck football fans might want to pay attention to it more than they normally would. There are several Oregon players that are expected to go in either the first or second round, with a total of five landing in the latest Pro Football Network two-round mock.

If those projections are even close to correct, the Ducks are set to have a productive 2023 season. In Dan Lanning’s second year on the job, the Ducks will be one of the favorites, along with USC, to win the Pac-12 championship. Having a first-round draft pick at quarterback doesn’t hurt either.

Here are the guys that PFN thinks will hear their names called early on next year in April.
