With 22 contracts due in 2024, the struggling Patriots will have some big decisions to make.

Change is coming for the New England Patriots whether it’s by their own choosing or not. They currently have 22 expiring contracts heading into 2024, and some big decisions will have to be made on what to do with them.

The team appears to be on the verge of tanking with a 1-5 record in their first six games of the season. They lack the talent to compete in a loaded AFC East division, and their 2023 schedule is too brutal for any realistic hopes of a turnaround.

There’s also the elephant in the room being Bill Belichick’s future with the team. Is this the year where Robert Kraft finally makes the tough decision to part ways with the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach?

Per Over the Cap, the Patriots are projected to be second only to the Chicago Bears in most projected cap space in the league. So the team is in perfect position to start a complete rebuild, if they so choose. But what would that mean to the pending contracts already on the roster?

Over The Cap’s Nick Korte writes that these five Saints veterans are entering dangerous territory, and that they’re in jeopardy of losing their roster spots in 2024.

Using a concept termed “contract fate” created by studying how teams treat veteran players after signing contracts, Korte found five outcomes were possible after players put pens to paper — negative “fates” like termination and pay cuts, along with positive “fates” in extensions and pay raises, along with a “fate” that’s fair for both the player and team in which the contract expires as written.

Korte then studied a sample size of more than 2,000 NFL contracts to find how often each “fate” occurred. And 50.7% of players are terminated before their contracts run out, while another 11.6% take pay cuts; a combined 62.3% of contracts ended with a negative outcome for the player. After breaking it down further into position groups, Korte took a look around the league and put together a list of players with “odds of negative contract fate” in 2023.

In other words, Korte suggests, these players might be fighting for their jobs in 2024. Despite having signed multi-year deals with the Saints, they’ll need to play at a high level in 2023 to return the following season. New Orleans is in the red by more than $63 million next year, though they can reach cap compliance again through another round of their usual restructures. Still, departures are possible.

Here’s a quick rundown at the moment at which Jets are set to test the open market next spring. Of course, the Jets can always get some of these players set before they hit free agency (namely a certain defensive tackle), but for now, this is the list.

Different players carry different free agency statuses. Most of them are unrestricted, meaning they’ll be free to entertain offers from other teams. Some are going to be restricted free agents, which means the Saints will have at least the option to match any contract offers. And many young players (like Shaheed) are exclusive-rights free agents who will only be able to play for the Saints on a low-cost contract in 2024.

Ever since general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah took over as the Minnesota Vikings general manager, they have been keeping things incredibly fluid with their roster. By doing so, it gives the team ultimate flexibility to build the roster in their image by bringing in new talent or extending players already in the building.

It can also be a detriment. The Vikings currently have $25,833,741 in projected 2024 cap space per Over The Cap, but that can shrink considerably with extensions for players that have a considerable amount of dead money.

As we take a big-picture look at the Vikings heading into the 2023 season, they will have 37 projected free agents after the season.
