Penn State eliminated in Big Ten women’s basketball tournament by Iowa (photos)

Caitlin Clark added to her historic college basketball career accolades as she helped Iowa cruise past Penn State.

Iowa women’s basketball icon Caitlin Clark may not have been at her very best on Friday evening against Penn State, but the Lady Lions were still unable to knock off Clark and the Hawkeyes to keep hopes of a Big Ten title alive. Penn State fell behind early and saw the game fall farther out of reach in the fourth quarter of a 95-62 loss in the Big Ten women’s basketball quarterfinal in Minneapolis that puts Penn State’s NCAA tournament hopes on thin ice.

Clark became college basketball’s all-time leading scorers in Iowa’s regular-season finale but added another career achievement to her bio against Penn State. Clark set the 3-point record with a pair of three-pointers to pass Steph Curry for the Division 1 record for most three-pointers in a single season (men or women; Clark now sits at 164 and Curry’s record stood at 162).

Penn State will sit and wait for the NCAA selection committee to determine their fate now, which means a long week of sitting and waiting and simply hoping for the best. Penn State had been a team riding on the bubble and was the last team in according to a recent update to ESPN’s women’s basketball bracketology. How this setback will impact their fate remains to be seen.

Here are some of the best photos from the game.

Lady Lions no match for Caitlin Clark and Iowa in Big Ten tournament

Penn State gets off to slow start vs. Iowa and Caitlin Clark and can not recover in Big Ten women’s basketball tournament loss.

There is no shame to be had in losing to one of the best players in women’s college basketball, but that doesn’t take the sting out of a tough end to its Big Ten tournament run for the Penn State Lady Lions. Penn State got off to a slow start against Iowa in the Big Ten quarterfinals on Friday night, with Iowa’s star player Caitlin Clark leading the way with 25 points.

Penn State fell behind in the first quarter by a score of 31-13 and was unable to climb out of the hole. The Hawkeyes put the game on ice in the fourth quarter with another 30-point outburst in the quarter to pull away for a 95-62 victory over the Lady Lions.

Leilani Kapinus led Penn State with 19 points and 5 rebounds and Ashley Owusu added 18 points and 6 rebounds in the losing effort. Iowa’s Clark posted 25 points and 10 rebounds with 7 assists to help Iowa advance to the Big Ten semifinals. With the Big Ten top seed Ohio State being upset by Maryland on Friday, the Hawkeyes are the clear favorite to capture the Big Ten tournament championship for a second consecutive season with Clark leading the way.

Penn State was burned from three-point range by the Hawkeyes. Iowa hit 15 three-pointers in the game and drained 26 of 30 free throw attempts. Penn State went to the free throw line just 9 times and hit just 7 of 33 attempts from three-point range.

The fate of the season and whether or not Penn State will play in the NCAA women’s basketball tournament now lies in the hands of the NCAA selection committee. The committee will determine the field for this year’s women’s basketball tournament on Sunday, March 17. Penn State was the last team to get in the tournament according to Charlie Creme of ESPN in his latest bracketology update. Penn State will be keeping a watchful eye on the developments in the rest of the conference tournament action leading up to Selection Sunday.

Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament: Broadcast and stream info for Penn State vs. Iowa

Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes are the only things standing in the way of a Penn State Big Ten Tournament semifinal berth.

The Lady Lions are moving on to the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament after defeating the Wisconsin Badgers Thursday evening. Penn State will now have to go up against Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes on Friday evening with a semifinal berth on the line.

Last time out against Iowa, Penn State could not slow down the Iowa offense, and the Hawkeyes exploded for 111 points. Hannah Stuelke scored 47 points, while Clark added her usual 27 points. The Lady Lion’s big problem was giving the Hawkeyes easy points from the free-throw line.

Penn State hopes their more disciplined defense from yesterday evening will carry over into tonight against one of the country’s more potent units. The Lady Lions only sent the Badgers 16 times while holding them to a measly 35% shooting from the field and 23% from 3-point range.

For a team that ranks fifth in the country in three-point percentage, the Lady Lions were only 6-22 from the 3-point line against Wisconsin. That percentage must improve against Iowa to pull off the upset against the Big Ten’s number two team.

In the two programs’ matchup in early February, we saw that Penn State’s offense can hang with Iowa, but its defense needs to improve to slow down Clark and the Hawkeyes.

Lady Lions roar past Wisconsin in Big Ten women’s basketball tournament

The Lady Lions advance past Wisconsin to set up a major Big Ten tournament matchup with Caitlin Clark and Iowa.

Penn State women’s basketball team will live to see another day after picking up a Big Ten tournament victory over Wisconsin on Thursday evening in Minnesota. Penn State’s 80-56 victory over the Badgers was fueled by four players scoring in double figures and a fast start to the game with a 12-point lead after the first quarter.

Makenna Marissa was among the players scoring in double figures with 10 points and a team-high five assists. Marissa also had four rebounds in the game. Ashley Owusu led the starting lineup with 13 points and Kylie Lavelle led the team with 14 points coming off the bench for the Lady Lions.

Penn State outscored Wisconsin in each quarter to cruise to a key victory to keep NCAA tournament hopes alive.

But things are not about to get any easier for the Lady Lions as the Big Ten women’s basketball tournament continues.

Next up for the Lady Lions will be a Big Ten quarterfinal matchup against Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Penn State will face Iowa on Friday at 6:30 p.m. ET. The game will air on Big Ten Network.

Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament: Broadcast and stream info for Penn State vs. Wisconsin

Penn State looking for an opening round win in the 2024 Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament against Wisconsin. Here is how to watch.

March is upon us, and the turn in the calendar usually means college basketball is reaching its peak. For Big Ten women’s basketball, the conference tournament begins Wednesday evening, with seeds 11-13 tipping off in Minneapolis.

Penn State finished the regular season with an 18-11 record (9-9 in league play). It holds the seventh seed in this year’s Big Ten Tournament and will face the 10-seed Wisconsin Badgers on Thursday evening. The winner will advance to the quarterfinals and play Caitlin Clark’s 2-seeded Iowa Hawkeyes.

Two Lady Lions who have helped lead Penn State all season are [autotag]Shay Ciezki[/autotag] and [autotag]Leilani Kapinus[/autotag].

Ciezki has been a reliable 3-point threat for Penn State. With 70 made three-pointers, she ranks fourth in the Big Ten and 38th nationally in made three-pointers. Her 39.1 clip beyond the arc ranks her sixth in the conference and 43rd nationally, and her 2.41 per game ranking is fourth in the conference and 46th in the nation.

Kapinus’s defense has been a bright spot for the Lady Lions, as she consistently rattles opposing ball handlers. She ranks second in the Big Ten with 62 steals and in steals per game, grabbing 2.14. As a team, Penn State’s defense forces 18.83 turnovers per game, second in the conference and 46th in the country.

Penn State’s calling card is its ability to generate turnovers of ball pressure and high-powered, efficient offense. Their offense ranks sixth in the nation and third in the conference in field goal percentage (49.5), with a nation’s seventh-best 84.4 points per game. They can also stripe it from deep and are fifth in the country in three-point percentage and second in the Big Ten, shooting 38.6%. They also rank 13th nationally and third in the conference in three-pointers per game with nine.

When the Badgers and the Lady Lions faced each other earlier this season, Wisconsin got the better of Penn State, and Badger forward Serah Williams was a huge reason why. Williams scored 31 points on 11-15 shooting. Williams is a bonafide two-way force, having just received the accolade of Defensive Player of the Year. She is the fourth leading scorer in the Big Ten, putting the Penn State frontcourt in a pivotal position to slow her down Thursday night.

Penn State’s defense on Williams and ability to hit from deep will decide the outcome of Thursday’s contest.

Here is how to catch Penn State’s women’s basketball opening game of the Big Ten Tournament against the Wisconsin Badgers from Minneapolis.
