NBA analyst doubts fit for Chris Paul on the San Antonio Spurs next season

There have been rumbles connecting the future Hall of Famer to the Spurs.

Would veteran Golden State Warriors point guard Chris Paul make sense on the San Antonio Spurs next season? There have been rumbles connecting the future Hall of Famer to the Spurs as a potential free agent target to put a capable point guard next to San Antonio rookie phenom Victor Wembanyama next season.

But would the fit be a good one and Paul potentially interested in signing with the Spurs while they are in the midst of a rebuild near the twilight of his career in the league? If you ask Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz, it seems pretty unlikely to end up happening. “From the Spurs’ perspective, this is a no-brainer if the price is right,” writes Swartz.

“Paul being around Victor Wembanyama and a young Spurs nucleus would be tremendous for their development and increased knowledge of the game,” he adds.

“From Paul’s perspective, a move to San Antonio makes no sense,” counters the B/R analyst. “Playing what could be his final season on a team that doesn’t even look playoff ready would cost Paul a chance at winning his first championship.”

“There’s a geography concern as well, as Paul’s wife and kids continue to reside in Los Angeles.”

Does Dominick Barlow have a future with the San Antonio Spurs?

Barlow has solid switching capabilities vs. smaller, faster players.

Does Dominick Barlow have a future with the San Antonio Spurs? According to Pounding the Rock’s Jacob Douglas, the second-year swingman very well could. “Barlow had tantalizing flashes of upside, but didn’t have a path to consistent minutes to realize that potential,” writes Douglas of the New Jersey native’s opportunities with the Spurs early in the season.

But he would eventually earn them later on in San Antonio’s 2023-24 campaign, when injuries to other frontcourt players gave him the burn he needed to show that he can cut it at this level. “Barlow has clear chops as a defender,” writes the PTR analyst.

In Douglas’ estimation, Barlow has solid switching capabilities vs. smaller, faster players. “He also showed a bit of nastiness around the basket despite being undersized,” he adds.

“He is a worker on the offensive and defensive glass, constantly putting his body on the line to save or extend possessions,” recounts, Douglas of the g-foot-9 forward.

“At worst, he’s a third big man who has promising upside. At best, he develops into Wembanyama’s long term backup.”

Spurs’ Zach Collins MRI confirms torn labrum; will be ready for start of 2024-25

Collins’ career has been plagued by injury since his arrival in the league.

The San Antonio Spurs have announced that veteran big man Zach Collins injured his labrum after hyperextending his shoulder in the Spurs’ last game of the 2023-24 NBA season vs. the Detroit Pistons, per recent reporting from HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto.

“Spurs center Zach Collins underwent an MRI in San Antonio that confirmed a torn labrum in his right shoulder, (San Antonio) says,” writes Scotto of the unfortunate injury. “Collins is scheduled to have surgery in the coming days and is expected to be fully recovered for the start of the 2024-25 season.”

Collins’ career has been plagued by injury since his arrival in the league, having crossed the 65-games played threshold just twice since being drafted in 2017, and missed the 2020-21 NBA season entirely.

A small silver lining is that this injury has nothing to do with the lower extremities that have been the cause of most of his missed games.

Collins averaged 11.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists with San Antonio in 2023-24.

Would Warriors vet sharpshooter Klay Thompson make sense as a free agent target for the Spurs?

Should the Spurs consider taking a flyer on the Washington State alum?

Would Golden State Warriors vet sharpshooter Klay Thompson make sense as a free agent target for the San Antonio Spurs this offseason? The Dubs forward remains one of the most feared 3-point shooters in the NBA (and for good reason, at 38.7% from beyond the arc at volume in 2023-25), and it doesn’t appear to be a lock that he will return to Golden State on his next contract with the team getting older and less effective.

Should the Spurs consider taking a flyer on the Washington State alum? Or do the Warriors know what they are doing by not leaping at the chance to extend the 34-year-old swingman?

The host of the “Locked On Spurs” podcast, Jeff Garcia, sat down with “Sweep The League” podcast’s Rudy Campos to discuss the chances of the Spurs landing Thompson.

Will Victor Wembanyama be even better with the San Antonio Spurs next season?

He challenges our understanding of how player development should work, even before he is done with his inaugural season in the NBA.

While pretty much everyone expected San Antonio Spurs rookie forward phenom Victor Wembanyama to be good in his first season in the NBA. But very few people were expecting his growth at this level to go from gangly rookie coping with the level of defense found in that league to a legit Defensive Player of the Year candidate.

But that is the allure of Wemby — he is like no player we have ever seen before, and challenges our understanding of how player development should work even before he is done with his inaugural season in the Association. Could Wembanyama be even better next season, given development arcs are rarely linear?

Or can we expect a little regression given how fast he’s come along?

To talk it over, the hosts of KABB FOX San Antonio’s “Sneakers and Cleats” podcast took some time on a recent episode. Check it out for yourself in the clip embedded above!
