How secure is Buzz Williams’ future at Texas A&M?

Things are getting ugly in College Station

Texas A&M Basketball’s (15-12, 6-8 SEC) frustrating season reached an embarrassing low on Saturday night, enduring a 35-point beatdown loss to the No. 5-ranked Tennessee Volunteers, the last team the A&M has beaten amid their current four-game losing streak.

The Aggies are still surprisingly on the cusp of the NCAA Tournament due to their five Quad 1 wins. However, they have now sustained a brutal five Quad 3 losses after several outcomes resulted in several movements in the NET rankings.

Still, unless a complete turnaround in the final two weeks comes to fruition, the only postseason opportunity this team will be offered is the NIT, which won’t satisfy the fanbase, coaching staff, and roster in the slightest. From the looks of it, this team looks lost, tired, and out of answers.

While the blame game can and should be divided, especially after Saturday’s dreadful effort on the court, Aggies head coach Buzz Williams’ coaching hot seat has begun to heat up. However, until Texas A&M hires a new Athletic Director to succeed Ross Bjork, the man who extended Williams last summer, I don’t expect any action regarding his future with the program to take place until after the 2024-2025 season.

Now, while some Aggie fans are rightfully outraged over the recent results, Williams’ coaching chops are still intact, as the 2X SEC Coach of the Year (2020, 2023) has led the program to a 91-59 record (42-36 SEC) including the most wins in a regular season during the 2021-2022 campaign.

However, with just one NCAA Tournament appearance in five seasons, resulting in a first-round exit after a blowout loss to Penn State last March, It’s fair to say that A&M is paying Buzz Williams ($4.2 million) to at least get to the postseason every year.

Outside of last season’s impressive 15 wins in SEC play, the Aggies have failed to live up to preseason expectations even before their current four-game skid, essentially wasting star guard Wade Taylor IV’s production.

At the same time, opponents have now forced A&M to rely on jump shots as their once thriving “attack the paint” game plan, once perfectly and consistently executive by veteran guard Tyrece Radford, has become predictive and simple to counter. Radford’s poor play in the last three games has undoubtedly kept the Aggies behind the 8-ball, and it couldn’t have come at a worse time.

Needing to add more shooting production through the transfer portal last offseason, the addition of guard Jace Carter has paid off late, but his early struggles from the field put even more pressure on Taylor to produce, while reserve guard Eli Lawrence, who shot 42% from the field with Middle Tennessee State the previous year, is currently averaging just 7 minutes and 2.4 points per game.

Even more so, Williams’s lack of recruiting prowess has hindered the program’s progress despite the University’s financial devotion since his arrival. While several incoming 2024 commits bring notable potential, it’s highly doubtful that any of these players will be ready to contribute as soon as next season.

Whether Texas A&M and Buzz Williams turn things around or continue to spiral, expect a Williams-led squad next season with a potential bevy of new faces in the locker room. If expectations aren’t met in 2025, a new chapter in Aggie Basketball may be on the horizon.

Aggies receive votes in newest USA TODAY Sports coaches poll

The Aggies have been on an offensive tear after their road series win against Auburn, leading to more votes in the new USA TODAY Sports Coaches poll

Texas A&M (20-12, 5-7 SEC) made a long-distance call to Uncle Mo last week, known as momentum to most, and for the first time in what seemed like forever, he came for what is hopefully an extended visit. After winning their first SEC series against the defending National Champion Ole Miss Rebels the prior weekend, the Aggies traveled to face Auburn in what looked to be a mid-season defining SEC matchup.

As Texas A&M’s pitching rotation began to find its groove, it was the offense that took center stage against a Tigers squad that was ill-prepared for freshman phenom Jace LaViolette’s performance at the plate, leading the team with 4 RBIs and 1 home run in the series. Winning two out of three, the Aggies scored 30 runs to the tune of 9-5 (Game 1 W), 9-10 (Game 2 L), and 12-6 (Game 3 W). If we’re counting their previous midweek 10-9 win vs. Texas State, that’s 40 runs in their last four victories.

On Monday, USA TODAY Sports released their newest Coaches poll, and even though the Aggies failed to make it back into the Top 25, they did receive 19 votes, and hold the same record at 20-12 as No. 25 Miami. This week, the Maroon and White head back to Olsen Field to face UTSA on Tuesday night, just two days before their three-game home series against Missouri starts on Thursday night.

Behind Enemy Lines: Texas A&M-Auburn Series Preview with Taylor Jones of Auburn Wire

In an interview with Auburn Wires’ Taylor Jones, we previewed the Aggie’s weekend road matchup vs. the Tigers.

The Texas A&M Aggies finally notched their first SEC series win against the defending National Champion Ole Miss Rebels last weekend with a little help from junior DH Ryan Targac’s game-winning home run in the final game of the series.

The Aggies will now travel to Plainsman Park in Auburn, Alabama to face the Auburn Tigers, who sit at 18-10 on the season, and 3-6 in the SEC, the same disappointing conference record as the Maroon and White. The Aggies and Tigers will start their three-game series on Thursday, April 6th at 7:00 p.m. CT, and will air on the SEC Network.

The Tigers are coming off their series loss on the road against the Florida Gators last weekend, knowing that a little home-cooking against a very up-and-down Aggie squad could be all they need to get back on track this season. The Tigers aren’t at all shy at the plate, sporting four players with .300 plus batting averages, yet the pitching staff has had its share of issues, Tommy Vail leads the team with 35 SO so far this year.

In an effort to provide you with the best preview possible for this crucial SEC series, we caught up with Taylor Jones, managing editor of Auburn Wire to provide his take on the action.

Here is the first edition this season of Behind Enemy Lines with Auburn Wire managing editor, Taylor Jones.

How to Watch: Baseball – Texas A&M vs Texas State

Here is the official “How to watch” ahead of Texas A&M’s midweek matchup vs. Texas State.

Texas A&M (17-11) is feeling pretty good after getting their first SEC series win of the season over Ole Miss. Texas State (19-9) is not going to be a pushover and is coming over their own series win over Arkansas State.

While the Aggies have not played the Bobcats as much as some of their other in-state rivals, they still have a history dating back to the 1980s. Texas A&M leads the series 47-14 and is currently on a three-game winning streak against them.

Hoping to keep the momentum after defeating the defending national champion Ole Miss Rebels last weekend, the Aggies are looking for a strong midweek showing before taking on Auburn on Thursday.

Aggies receive votes in newest USA TODAY Sports coaches poll

Texas A&M won their first SEC series vs. Ole Miss last weekend and has now received votes in the newest USA TODAY Coaches poll rankings

Texas A&M (17-11, 3-6 SEC) finally got back on some sort of healthy footing after winning their first SEC series of the season, defeating the defending National Champion Ole Miss Rebels 2 games to 1, culminating with a 5-4 victory on Sunday after junior DH Ryan Targac hit a game-winning home run in the bottom of the 9th.

After their successful weekend, Texas A&M didn’t quite make their way back to the Top 25 in the newest USA TODAY Sports coaches poll but did receive 21 votes, hopefully, a positive sign going forward.

From a momentum perspective, winning their first conference series removes a ton of weight from their collective shoulders, while the offense has been heating up ahead of their big road series vs. Auburn starting Thursday, a couple days after their midweek Tuesday contest vs. Texas State.

However, the Aggies are also coming off a previous four-game losing streak after being swept by Tennessee, and losing a midweek contest vs. Texas last Tuesday, mainly due to highly problematic pitching performances from the starting rotation and the bullpen, putting even more pressure on pitching coach Nate Yeskie to work through the chaos and finally find a rotation that sticks, and most of all produce results.

The Aggies will travel to The Plains to face the Auburn Tigers Thursday through Saturday for a three-game SEC series. Thursday’s 7:00 pm matchup will air on the SEC Network, and A&M’s starting pitchers for the first two games will be announced later this week.

Game Two Recap: Texas A&M vs Ole Miss

Ole Miss takes game two in the series with the help of the struggling Aggie pitching

I never like bashing anyone, especially college athletes, but I will point out issues a team is having. Texas A&M (16-11) just cannot find reliable pitching on a consistent basis. That came back to bite them again in game two where they outhit Ole Miss (16-10) 13 to 10 but got doubled up on the scoreboard. If you are wondering how the score ended up so lopsided, it’s because the pitching on Saturday walked 11 batters and hit two while only striking out 10.

The Aggies hit the ball early and often today. The game started off with back-to-back doubles by Hunter Haas and Jack Moss. Then Austin Bost hit another double to take an early 2-0 into the second. Unfortunately, Ole Miss was down two outs with two strikes and hit a home run to tie the game.

Unfazed, the Aggie batters broke the tie adding another two runs off a Max Kaufer sac fly and a Moss single each bringing a runner home for a 4-2 lead. That was wiped away in the fourth inning with Ole Miss taking advantage of two walks by getting four hits and scoring five to take the lead 4-7.

A sac fly by Moss cut the lead to 5-7

But again, Aggie pitching would put more pressure on their own hitters. After getting the first two batters out in the top of the fifth, Texas A&M walked the next FOUR batters giving them a free run. The Rebels followed up immediately with a two-run RBI double extending their lead to 5-10.

The eighth inning was just as frustrating as the fourth and fifth innings. The Aggies walked two batters, hit two batters, and gave up a double steal. All that amounted to four runs with only one hit by Ole Miss pushing the lead to 5-14. The Aggies were able to put two scores on the board in the bottom of the 9th but that was all they could muster dropping game two 7-14

Final Score: Aggies 7, Rebels 14 – W: Jones, Brayden (1-0); L: Lamkin, Justin (1-1)

The Final game of the season will be at 1 pm on Sunday.

Series Preview: Baseball – Texas A&M vs Ole Miss

Texas A&M and Ole Miss will start a three-game series at Blue Bell Park

In something that no one could have predicted two top 25 pre-season teams are both looking for their first SEC series win. Former No. 5 Texas A&M is currently on a four-game losing streak and 1-5 in SEC play. As bad as that is, defending National Champion Ole Miss is currently on a three-game losing streak and 0-6 in league play.

Now granted both teams have played top-tier opponents back-to-back weeks because the SEC is a stacked league. To further prove this point, as you can tell by the records, they are each looking for their first series win in the league play. The series between the two have been extremely close with Ole Miss having a one-game edge of 17-18. These next three games are going to come down to pride at this point and they both need a win in the worst way.

‘We’re going streaking!’ Texas A&M baseball gives viewers more than they paid for thanks to viral streaker

During Texas A&M’s mid-week home game vs. Texas on Tuesday night, a random streaker stormed the field and has now been identified

On Tuesday night in front of over 7,000 fans inside Olsen Field, Texas A&M (15-10) took on their in-state rivals the Texas Longhorns in a heated mid-week battle, but instead of the game itself making the headlines in what was eventually a hard-fought 5-2 victory for the 19th-ranked Longhorns, an unidentified streaker rushed the field in the middle of the contest in an idiotic fashion.

The young man who has since been identified as none other than 19-year-old Spencer Werner, who according to the Houston Chronicle has been charged with criminal trespass and disorderly conduct/exposure, (it gets better), is actually a freshman student-athlete and member of the cross country team at Texas A&M.

Here’s a short background on Spencer Werner: Spencer Werner hails from Wilmette, Illinois, and attended Loyola Academy during high school. He was named the SEC’s men’s freshman runner of the week on Sept. 20, 2022, after finishing eighth at the Texas A&M Invitational, Werner had a time of 24:37 (a 4:57 per mile pace) in the 8,000-meter race.

Werner really went all out in terms of his wardrobe, or lack thereof during his five minutes of fame, donning a Darth Maul mask (Central villain in Star Wars Episode 1), while holding a “Longhorns Suck” sign with the message “Trump 2024” painted on his chest, all during his 5th-inning jaunt that seriously ticked off in-game announcer Clay Matvick, who didn’t want to give the interruption even a smidgen of attention.

After making his way to center field, Werner successfully jumped the fence line as police waited for his arrival, where he surrendered immediately. With that, one of the dumbest, and funniest moments of the week ended, and all young Spencer received were a couple of criminal charges and a suspension from the cross-country team; Mission accomplished.

Aggies fall in newest D1Baseball rankings

After going 1-2 in a series against the top-ranked LSU Tigers this weekend, the Aggies took a dive in D1Baseball’s newest Top 25 rankings.

It’s been a rocky season so far for the Texas A&M Aggies baseball squad who are currently 14-6 on the season, recently dropping their opening SEC series against the No.1 ranked LSU Tigers this weekend, but did manage to notch an impressive 8-6 victory in Game 3 on Sunday afternoon to finish 7-2 on the week.

Even after winning eight in a row from Saturday, March 4th to Tuesday, March 14th, their two questionable losses to LSU to the tune of 9-0 in Game 1, and 12-7 in Game 2 had led to future changes to the lineup, specifically moves in the starting pitching rotation. After being ranked 15th in D1Baseball.com’s Top 25 rankings last week, the Aggies took quite the nose dive in this week’s rankings, falling six spots to No. 21 this week.

Even though the Aggies’ struggled against the Tigers early on, Freshman pitcher Justin Lampkin’s relief pitching (4.1 IN, 4 H, 5 SO) and Junior Stanley Tucker’s game-winning double (2 H, 2 RBI) provided multiple bright spots heading into a new week.

Texas A&M will host the Rice Owls in a midweek match-up at Blue Bell Park on March 21st at 6 pm.

Game Two Recap: No. 15 Texas A&M vs No. 1 LSU

Texas A&M drops the series to LSU after their game two loss

No. 15 Texas A&M (13-6) had a strong start to the game with consistent hitting throughout, however, the bats of No. 1 LSU (18-1) were just too much for the Aggies to overcome.

Unlike the first game of the series, the Aggies came out pretty hot in the bottom of the second inning. The first two batters reached base safely, and Freshman Kaeden Kent would get an RBI single through the right-side scoring Austin Bost. Later in the same inning, Hank Bard hit a single that scored Ryan Targac. In the bottom of the third, the Aggies only logged one hit but two unearned runs when Jack Moss and Bost crossed home plate.

The top of the fourth is where the wheels fell off. Texas A&M entered the inning up 4-0 and after a rough start to the inning, Evan Aschenbeck was pulled for Matt Dillard with two outs and bases loaded. LSU would go on to get four hits scoring six runs to go up by two runs.

The Aggies tried to answer back in the bottom half but only produced one run via RBI seeing Jace Laviolette score, cutting the lead by one to end 5-6. Both teams went scoreless in the fifth before LSU put three runs on the board to the Aggies one for a 6-9 score with the Tigers extending their lead.

LSU mirrored the sixth inning adding another three runs, but A&M would not be able to chop at the lead only getting one hit stranding two on base. There was only one other run scored the rest of the game coming off a sacrifice fly by Laviolette scoring Targac for a final score of 12-7 losing the series to LSU.

Final Score: Aggies 7, Tigers 12 – W: Edwards, Garrett (3-0); L: Dillard, Matt (0-2)

Game three will be on March 19 at 1:00 pm at Blue Bell Park
