ESPN spoiled the results of the 2023 NHL Draft Lottery early in stunning broadcast snafu

Spoilers ESPN!

Kevin Weekes is quite notorious for breaking trades in the hockey world, but this is maybe the one NHL thing he shouldn’t have leaked.

On Monday, the Chicago Blackhawks won the 2023 NHL Draft Lottery, jumping both the Anaheim Ducks and Columbus Blue Jackets to nab the No. 1 overall spot. With said spot, the Blackhawks will be able to draft generational hockey talent Connor Bedard after the franchise completely dismantled their team this past season in order to tank for a better position.

Given the Blackhawks are still reeling from a sexual assault cover-up that took place during their Stanley Cup victories in the early 2010s, hockey fans were… less than pleased about the results.

But before all that, ESPN seemingly spoiled the results before deputy commissioner Bill Daly could reveal the top three. Going into a commercial break before the top three was announced, Weekes noted that the Blue Jackets — who had the second-best odds for the top pick — had dropped to No. 3 overall. Here’s how the moment played out on the broadcast.

And, what do you know, the Blue Jackets did drop to No. 3 — the first change in draft order of the night — once ESPN came back from commercial and Daly revealed the results.

In an interview after the draft order was revealed, Columbus general manager Jarmo Kekalainen said the broadcasting snafu “spoiled the moment” for his club.

No kidding. Weekes no doubt made a mistake, but we are only human and mistakes do happen. Still, NHL fans could not help but joke about ESPN spoiling the results of the draft lottery minutes early.

The 2023 NHL Draft is going to be a must-watch.

The 2023 NHL Draft Lottery is going to be a must-watch event for hockey fans.

Sure, it’s no Stanley Cup Playoffs, but the NHL draft lottery is as important of an event as it comes for teams in the bottom half this year. Why? Because getting to draft No. 1 overall will guarantee a team is able to select 17-year-old Connor Bedard, one of the next great hockey superstars, at this year’s draft.

As for when this highly-anticipated event is set to take place, the 2023 NHL Draft Lottery will be held on Monday, May 8 at 8 p.m. ET. Hockey fans will be able to catch the action on ESPN, Sportsnet, and TVA Sports.

NHL Draft Lottery odds: Which team has the best shot at the No. 1 pick in 2023?

These NHL teams have the best odds at the No. 1 pick this year.

The upcoming 2023 NHL Draft is a big one for the hockey world.

While the fight for the Stanley Cup is still ongoing between the top teams, the 16 clubs that make up the league’s worst will be hoping the lottery balls break their way. On May 8 at 8 p.m. ET, the 2023 NHL Draft Lottery will get underway in an event that will determine the fates and futures of many franchises.

Led by wunderkind Connor Bedard, this year’s NHL draft class is as deep as we’ve seen in years. Unfortunately, not every team entered into the lottery will have a chance at snagging the No. 1 overall pick. Much like last year, teams can only move up to 10 spots and only the first two spots in the lottery are up for grabs. The remaining teams will then be sorted by inverse order of regular-season points to determine the rest of the field.

The decision to change how the NHL Draft Lottery works will benefit teams like the Anaheim Ducks and Columbus Blue Jackets, who both had miserable seasons and are guaranteed at least a top-four pick because of it.

Here’s the full 16-team list of the odds for the upcoming 2023 NHL draft lottery.
