3 offensive tackles to watch for Chiefs at 2023 NFL Scouting Combine

Here are three offensive tackle prospects the #Chiefs should be keeping an eye on during on-field drills and testing Sunday.

The 2023 NFL Scouting Combine concludes on Sunday, with the final group of offensive players hitting the field at Lucas Oil Stadium for on-field drills and workouts. You can watch the running backs and offensive linemen workout from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. ET on NFL Network.

The Kansas City Chiefs added a number of young contributors to the team via the draft just a season ago. Several of those players posted impressive performances at the combine. The team will look to follow up its standout 2022 draft class by adding even more instant-impact players in 2023.

Keep an eye on the following three offensive tackles working out on Sunday. A head-turning performance could put any number of the players squarely on the radar for Brett Veach and company.

Prospects who interviewed with Chiefs at 2023 NFL Scouting Combine

Here’s a look at the prospects who told reporters they’d had formal and informal interviews with the #Chiefs at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine.

The media portion of the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine is officially over, but we’ve learned plenty about the upcoming crop of draft prospects, including information about the teams they’ve interviewed with. Over 30 prospects confirmed they’d met with the Kansas City Chiefs in either formal or informal interviews at the combine.

Informal interviews are exactly how they sound. They’re quick and dirty, usually taking place with a scout or position coach in an informal setting. Usually, it’s just a way to get introduced to a prospect or check in after a meeting at another event like an All-Star Game.

Formal interviews are what the combine is all about for NFL teams. That’s where they really get an opportunity to know draft prospects. These are longer, highly structured, sit-down meetings that happen with multiple members of an organization. In the case of Kansas City, this usually means Andy Reid, the coordinator, the position coach, Brett Veach and an area scout.

Teams are only permitted 45 formal interviews and they typically use those on players they hold in high regard. Some of these interviews are done so teams can learn more about medical or character concerns, others are strictly an opportunity to better understand the type of player a particular prospect is. Reid and the rest of those in the room will watch tape with them and get them on the whiteboard breaking down plays. It’s an exercise that they use to get to know both the person and the player.

Below you’ll find a list of the prospects who said they met with the Chiefs at the combine or elsewhere during the course of the pre-draft process:

Purdue QB Aidan O’Connell details Chiefs DE George Karlaftis’ work ethic

Purdue QB Aidan O’Connell told @EdEastonJr about #Chiefs DE George Karlaftis’ work ethic and explained how he linked him up with Bobby Stroupe last offseason.

The underdog story has many forms, especially in the NFL. The annual scouting combine allows players to price their value and raise their stock beyond their highlight reels.

Purdue quarterback Aidan O’Connell was a walk-on to the team back in 2017, fighting for a roster spot and showing patience for years. After all of that hard work and dedication, O’Connell got his chance, earning two consecutive Second-Team All-Big Ten honors in 2021 and 2022. At the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine, he’ll have another opportunity to prove himself.

Chiefs Wire’s Ed Easton Jr. spoke with O’Connell on Saturday, who praised his former teammate George Karlaftis after his rookie year in Kansas City.

“Yeah, I love George (Karlaftis),” said O’Connell. “A great friend and just a great guy, a super hard worker. He was a professional about his craft in college and so super proud. He got the opportunity and made the most of it. And he’s one for one — one Super Bowl, one win. So, I expect a lot more from him. I hope to talk to him soon. It’s been a while.”

O’Connell opened up about the trainer he introduced Karlaftis to last off-season, a connection that would prove pivotal in 2022. O’Connell introduced the Chiefs’ defensive end to APEC’s Bobby Stroupe, who is best known for working as Patrick Mahomes’ personal trainer.

“Last offseason, yeah,” said O’Connell. “I was training with (Bobby Stroupe), and he trains guys in Kansas City. So, I got (George Karlaftis) in touch with him.”

Stroupe helped train Karlaftis ahead of the 2022 NFL season, providing the same type of specialized and unique training as he does for Mahomes. Asked about his own intangibles, it’s easy to understand why O’Connell even thought to get Karlaftis and Stroupe together.

“I think my journey kind of speaks to that,” said O’Connell. “I love being in a locker room with the guys. I care more about my teammates than just football, so I want to make sure they know I care about how they’re doing. . . I think I bring being a great locker room guy and being a great leader. I’m going to lead by example even if I’m not the starter.”

The Chiefs are set at quarterback with Mahomes, but there is an opportunity for a backup role following Chad Henne’s retirement. O’Connell’s performance at the combine, both on the field and in the meeting rooms, could be exactly what puts him on the Chiefs’ radar.

Florida QB Anthony Richardson has record day at 2023 NFL combine

Richardson had a record-breaking performance at the combine.

Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson knew the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine would be an excellent opportunity for his draft prospects.

Richardson measured in at 6-foot-4, 244 pounds this week at the combine. And, according to multiple sources, Richardson crushed the interview process, with some saying he was the most impressive quarterback interview in Indianapolis.

On Saturday, it was Richardson’s turn to wow all 32 NFL teams on the field during drills. That’s exactly what he did, posting one of the more memorable performances in recent history.

Under almost any metric you use, Richardson posted either perfect or nearly perfect athletic scores. Here are Richardson’s testing results from Saturday, with his rankings since 2003.

  • 40 time: 4.4 seconds [2nd]
  • Broad jump: 10’9″ [1st]
  • Vertical jump: 40.5″ [1st]

The most comparable quarterback whose combine performance compares to Richardson’s is former Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III in 2012.

Here’s this from Next Gen Stats.

Watch Richardson run his 40:

Kent Platte, who is the creator of the Relative Athletic Score, gave Richardson a perfect score.

No one knows what happens with Richardson’s NFL career, but Saturday’s performance only boosted his draft stock.

Vikings draft prospects: 8 players that impressed at the combine on Saturday

The quarterbacks and pass catchers got onto the field on Saturday afternoon and they delivered in a big way

The NFL Scouting Combine kicked off with a bang on Thursday afternoon by starting with the defensive lineman and linebackers. There was a lot of intrigue with this group, especially at the top.

On Friday, we got the secondary players with the cornerbacks and safeties. This is one of, if not the, deepest class in recent memory.

Saturday was the day everyone was waiting for. The day we got to see the quarterbacks throw and the wide receivers run. Needless to say, they didn’t disappoint.

Here were the seven players that stood out on Saturday.

5 winners from QB, WR, TE workouts at 2023 NFL combine

Quarterbacks and pass catchers were in the spotlight Saturday. Who stood out most?

For the first time in a very long time, the Jacksonville Jaguars have zero questions about their starting quarterback. Trevor Lawrence earned Pro Bowl honors in 2022 with 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions, and the team believes it’s just the start of the 23-year-old’s ascension.

That meant many of the stars of the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine on Saturday weren’t players that the Jaguars have in their sights. With quarterbacks, receivers, and tight ends on display, most eyes were glued on the passers who may soon reshape the AFC South.

For Jacksonville, it was the tight ends and wide receivers that were more notable.

Here are five players who stood out most in Indianapolis on Saturday:

A dozen Georgia Bulldogs received invitations to the 2023 NFL combine.

12 Georgia Bulldogs received invitations to the 2023 NFL combine in Indianapolis, Indiana. Georgia defensive end Nolan Smith did the most to help his 2023 NFL draft stock with outstanding interviews and a record-breaking 40-yard dash time.

Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter had to return to Athens and was booked on charges of racing and reckless driving. Numerous Georgia players were asked about Jalen Carter and his character and the state of the Georgia football program as a result.

Here’s a look at Georgia Bulldogs during their respective interviews at the NFL combine:

Seahawks have met with Anthony Richardson, John Michael Schmitz

According to Ian Rapoport at NFL Network, Seattle is one of several teams in the top 10 that have met with Richardson.

Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson has blown the lid off the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine. Today, he set two new records for quarterbacks with a 40.5″ vertical leap and a 10’9″ broad jump. Richardson also ran a 4.44 second 40-yard dash time, made all the more impressive by doing so listed as 6-foot-4 and 244 pounds.

As a result, Richardson will be shooting up everybody’s draft boards, possibly even into the top 10 – which puts him in range for the Seahawks and their No. 5 overall pick. There’s definitely some interest there, too. According to Ian Rapoport at NFL Network, Seattle is one of several teams picking in the top 10 that have met with Richardson. Watch.

To put Richardson’s testing numbers in perspective, right now he stands at a perfect 10 for his RAS score, more than doubling the average QB’s.

via @MathBomb

Richardson’s pro comps have been pure chaos, but the Cam Newton case gets stronger here, as he also scored a 10 back in 2011.

Richardson’s not the only intriguing prospect the team has met with, of course. The Seahawks have also officially met with five defensive players so far that we are aware of, including Georgia cornerback Kelee Ringo.

The team has also met with Minnesota center John Michael Schmitz.

Schmitz (6-foot-4, 320 pounds) should appeal to this team for obvious reasons. He’s the No. 1 ranked center in this draft class and the Seahawks’ own starter Austin Blythe just announced his retirement.

Anthony Richardson tests out of this world, runs unofficial 4.44 seconds in 40-yard dash

The Florida Gator quarterback made his case to be the first overall pick on Saturday

The NFL Scouting Combine has one player who takes over the event with a superb weekend, and we have that player in 2023.

After setting records in both the vertical jump and broad jump, Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson ran an unofficial 4.44-second 40-yard dash.

Despite an inconsistent single season as the starter for the Gators, Richardson possesses every ounce of talent that you could ever want and he might end up with the best-ever Relative Athletic Score at his position.

Richardson is the real deal and he made a major case to be the first overall pick in the NFL draft this April.
