Celtics alums Kevin Garnett, Tony Allen on whether Doc Rivers should have been fired by the 76ers

Allen and KG talk Doc’s exit from Philadelphia, his past and future, what will happen with James Harden and more.

After having won a title with him as his head coach in 2008, it’s safe to say that Hall of Fame Boston Celtics big man Kevin Garnett knows Doc Rivers about as well as anyone in the wider NBA community. So The Big Ticket is an especially worthwhile voice to listen to as KG discusses whether it was fair of Rivers’ last team — the Philadelphia 76ers — to let him go after their former team (the Celtics) beat Philly in the 2023 East semis.

Garnett is joined in the conversation with former Celtics champ Tony Allen on a recent episode of the Showtime Basketball “KG Certified” podcast, where the two talk Doc’s exit from Philadelphia, his past and future, what will happen with James Harden and more.

Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what KG and the Grindfather had to say about some Eastern Conference post-playoff fallout.

How did the Boston Celtics implement a new defensive approach to stymie the 76ers?

The Celtics did not always rely on it but put it to good use sporadically to help keep Harden and Embiid on their heels.

The Boston Celtics used a unique approach to guarding 2023 Most Valuable Player Joel Embiid and former MVP James Harden in their East semis series against the Philadelphia 76ers. The radical approach, known in NBA circles as “peel switching,” is a defensive strategy that helps a ball club deal with a lost defensive assignment in a switching or switch-heavy style of defense.

The Celtics did not always rely on it but put it to good use sporadically to help keep Harden and Embiid on their heels while also providing an effective counter to the potentially devastating line-drive slashing from Sixers guard Tyrese Maxey.

To learn more about peel switching and how the Celtics made great use of it in the last round, check out the clip embedded below to hear a great breakdown from the folks at the Hoops With Nick YouTube channel.

The Boston Celtics’ big adjustment that stopped the Sixers’ Joel Embiid and James Harden

What did the Boston Celtics do differently to beat the Philadelphia 76ers in Game 7?

What did the Boston Celtics do differently to beat the Philadelphia 76ers in Game 7?

Whatever it was won them the 2023 Eastern Conference semifinals series in order to secure the right to face the Miami Heat in the East Finals for the third time in four years.

Fans might have picked up on the uptick in the use of the pick and roll with the St. Louis native — especially in his scorching hot third quarter — but what else did Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla and Tatum’s teammates change in order to shut down the Sixers’ bread and butter on offense?

The host of the “Thinking Basketball” podcast Ben Taylor put together a clip that highlights the adjustments Boston made on both ends of the floor to transform their fortunes in the East semis on Sunday.

Jayson Tatum loves playing basketball for the Boston Celtics

It hasn’t always been an open love affair between Tatum and Boston fans.

Star Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum shocked fans as he talked about his love for playing in Boston after the Celtics sent the Philadelphia 76ers packing in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference semis series with their Atlantic Division foes.

The St. Louis native has been a key player for the Celtics and has become the franchise player in Boston but it hasn’t always been an open love affair between Tatum and Boston fans. At least not until this past Sunday, May 14th, when the Celtics eliminated the Sixers in the wake of a historic, 51-point outing from Tatum, the most anyone has ever scored in a Game 7.

In this postgame press conference, Tatum shares his thoughts on what makes Boston such a great city for basketball and why he enjoys playing for the Celtics and performing for Celtics fans.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to see how the crew of the CLNS Media “Garden Report” podcast reacted to Tatum’s massive game and his professed love of the city afterward.

Boston’s Jayson Tatum opens up about his Celtic pride after Game 7 blowout of 76ers

“I love getting to put on this uniform,” he said. “I love getting to play big games, put on the performances in front of them.”

After the Boston Celtics won Game 7 of their East semis series with the Philadelphia 76ers thanks in very large part to the 51-point explosion coming from Jayson Tatum, the Celtics star opened up about how he felt about playing for Boston in ways he never had before. “I can’t express it enough,” suggested Tatum. “The genuine love that I feel from the crowd.”

“Whether it is pregame, during the game … I’ve been here my whole career, right?” asked the St. Louis native rhetorically. “I feel that they embrace me almost as one of their own, and that means a lot, and I love being here.”

“I love getting to put on this uniform,” he added. “I love getting to play big games, put on the performances in front of them, and they feed off of emotion and energy.”

“It’s reciprocated — I can’t express it enough. I just love being here and playing in front of this crowd.”

Celtics Lab 191: Boston flattens Philly in Game 7 to advance to face the Heat in the East finals

What did Boston do differently? Why did we see so much pick-and-roll for a Celtics squad in 2022-23, and how did Boston work to take away what the Sixers lean on the most offensively?

The Boston Celtics needed to come with their “A” Game to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals in Game 7 of their East semis series with the Philadelphia 76ers, and somehow the Celtics found a way to dig even deeper with a historic, 51-point outing from star forward Jayson Tatum.

What did Boston do differently? Why did we see so much pick-and-roll for a Celtics squad in 2022-23, and how did Boston work to take away what the Sixers lean on the most offensively? And most important of all, how are we feeling about the looming rematch with the Heat in a do-over of the 2020 bubble’s final four teams as the Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers advance to face each other in the Western Conference finals?

The hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast had plenty to say after a 112-88 Boston blowout Game 7 win, as well as the rest of the postseason landscape now that the Celtics are no longer in danger of getting sent fishing.

Mother’s Day Massacre: Tatum drops 51 as Celtics hand Sixers 112-88 Game 7 waxing

Jayson Tatum and the Celtics handed Philly a historic Game 7 thumping, as Boston now advances to a fifth Eastern Conference Finals in seven seasons.

The Boston Celtics will advance to the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals after defeating the Philadelphia 76ers 112-88 in Game 7 at home Sunday afternoon. Jayson Tatum dropped 51 points, the most ever scored in a Game 7 in NBA history, handily putting the Sixers to bed in the process. The Celtics now face Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat in the next round, the third time in four season’s Boston and Miami have clashed with a trip to the Finals on the line.

Just a few days removed from a heroic fourth quarter performance to save Boston’s season, Tatum once again put on a show, this time securing a series win behind an unbelievable scoring performance points. With the lights at their brightest, the First Team All-NBA forward rose to the occasion, helping the Celtics overcome this season’s MVP Joel Embiid and his rival 76ers.

Boston outscored Philadelphia 33-10 in the third quarter, grabbing the game by the horns and never letting go. The Celtics now head to the conference finals with home court advantage and a whole lot of momentum. With the win, Boston is secured its fifth Eastern Conference Finals appearance in seven seasons.

Here’s what you may have missed from Boston’s Game 7 thumping of Philadelphia this Mother’s Day.

76ers’ Doc Rivers complains about foul error disparity ahead of Game 7 with Celtics

“I mean 13-to-4 is very—in a one-point, two-point game, is hard to recover from,” said Rivers.

Shortly before the start of the Boston Celtics‘ Game 7 with the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2023 East semis, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the league had circulated a document citing “13 officiating errors disadvantaging 76ers to four disadvantaging Boston,” which Philly coach Doc Rivers commented on pregame, saying “It was disappointing to see, honestly.”

“I mean 13-to-4 is very—in a one-point, two-point game, is hard to recover from,” he added. “It really is and when you saw the report and then saw the calls that were missed, the trip on James Harden down the stretch when he fell to the floor. The loose ball where they called a timeout, they didn’t have the ball plus there was a foul on (Marcus) Smart on the play that would’ve been free throws — that’s hard to recover from.”

“Having said that, it’s a human game and you have to just try and play through it,” suggested the Sixers coach.

“Usually, the disparity is never that great. Most games, there’s two or three and you can live with those, but 13-to-4, that’s hard.”

It remains to be seen whether such comments will have an effect on how the game is officiated, but fans of both teams are taking it as one might expect on social media ahead of the game.
