Previewing Boston Celtics-Philadelphia 76ers Game 7 with Cedric Maxwell

Will we see more slumping from Jayson Tatum? More heroics from Marcus Smart? And most importantly, which team do we think will survive and advance?

The Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers clash later today in a decisive Game 7 of their 2023 Eastern Conference Playoffs series to decide which ball club will advance and face the Miami Heat in the 2023 Eastern Conference finals. The Celtics appear to have momentum on their side with a road win vs. the Sixers in Game 6 as they return to play the last game of the series on their own home court of TD Garden.

What should we take from Game 6 to this next and last game of the series? Will the Celtics stick with the double-big starting unit featuring both Al Horford and Robert Williams III? Will we see more slumping from Jayson Tatum? More heroics from Marcus Smart? And most importantly, which team do we think will survive and advance?

The hosts of the CLNS Media “Cedric Maxwell” recently dialed in on all of the above on a recent episode.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what the eponymous host and co-host Josue Pavon had to say about today’s critical Game 7.

Are the Philadelphia 76ers feeling the pressure ahead of their Game 7 tilt vs. the Boston Celtics?

Did Boston shatter any of the confidence that the Sixers had left? Are the Celtics going to take Game 7 back home at TD Garden?

In what was looking more and more like the end of the Boston Celtics’ 2022-23 season, the Celtics pulled off a dramatic 95-86 Game 6 win on Thursday night over the Philadelphia 76ers to force a Game 7 back in Boston.

After three quarters of some of the worst offense of his career, star forward Jayson Tatum stepped up massively in the contest’s fourth quarter with a 16-point explosion, including 4-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. Did Boston shatter any of the confidence that the Sixers had left? Are the Celtics going to take Game 7 back home at TD Garden?

Celtics force a Game 7 vs. the Philadelphia 76ers; what can we expect?

What other chess moves are left heading into Game 7?

The Boston Celtics won against the Philadelphia 76ers 95-86 to take Game 6 of their 2023 Eastern Conference semifinals series with the Sixers, forcing a Game 7 on their own home court of TD Garden on Thursday night. Star Celtics forward Jayson Tatum contributed 16 points in the final frame of the game after going 1-of-14 over the first three quarters, saving the team from negative narratives we were sure to hear had they lost.

Veteran point guard Marcus Smart was the game’s MVP, with his excellent defensive impact, timely shots, and good decisions. The team’s starting five looked rejuvenated with Robert Williams III back in the starting lineup and keeping the 76ers on their toes. This victory was a team effort, but Tatum’s performance was for the ages.

Host of the CLNS Media “Winning Plays” podcast Brian Robb and guest Souichi Terada (both of MassLive) break down a gritty Celtics Game 6 win.

They cover Tatum’s late heroics, early struggles, the stellar play of Smart, the impact of the starting lineup shift, and what other chess moves are left heading into Game 7.

Be sure to take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what they had to say about the season-saving victory.

Celtics Lab extra: Talking Game 6 with The Morning Jab

How much credit should Joe Mazzulla get for the win? How much flak for the near-loss ought Jayson Tatum to receive after a 1-14 run over the game’s first three quarters?

The Boston Celtics found a way to win against the Philadelphia 76ers in Game 6, forcing a Game 7 at TD Garden on Sunday. Was it the increased attention to defense that got the job done for Boston? Marcus Smart calling out his teammates to spark that defensive resurgence? Switching back to a double-big lineup of Al Horford and Robert Williams III to start the game?

How did Boston’s Jayson Tatum survive his worst slump ever in Game 6 vs. the 76ers?

The St. Louis native started the game just 1-14 over the tilt’s first three quarters and ended up outscoring the entire Sixers team in the final quarter.

Star Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum showed up when it mattered most and scored 12 of the Celtics’ last 14 points in the final frame of the Celtics’ critical Game 6 win over the Philadelphia 76ers in their 2023 Eastern Conference semifinals series.

The St. Louis native started the game just 1-14 over the tilt’s first three quarters and ended up outscoring the entire Sixers team in the final quarter of the big win, leading Boston to a 95-86 victory. “I kept looking at the time,” Tatum said to the media after the contest. “I’ve got time, I’ve got time to make a difference. I believed that the whole time.”

‘His poise got him going’: Boston’s Joe Mazzulla on how Jayson Tatum came alive late in Game 6

‘He plays with a level of poise, regardless of how the game is going,’ said Mazzulla.

It’s never a good thing when one of your star players goes almost historically cold in the first half of a must-win playoff game, but even after Jayson Tatum went 0-for-10 in the first half of Game 6 against the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2023 East Semis, Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla still had plenty of praise for the Duke alum.

“His poise got him going,” explained Mazzulla postgame to CLNS Media. “So, the standard that is set for him, to where if he’s not scoring, he’s not playing good basketball, is wrong.”

“And so he’s had multiple games this series when he’s at his best, he doesn’t need to score.”

“I thought his communication with his teammates, I thought his defensive intensity, and … even his force when driving the ball kept him in the game,” added the Celtics head coach.

“He plays with a level of poise, regardless of how the game is going.”

Robert Williams III gets first playoff start in Celtics’ Game 6 win over 76ers

In a massive change before the Boston Celtics took on the Philadelphia 76ers in a win-or-go-home Game 6, the Celtics pulled off a big change in their lineup.

In a massive change before the Boston Celtics took on the Philadelphia 76ers in a win-or-go-home Game 6, the Celtics pulled off a big change in their lineup by bringing back Robert Williams III into the starting five. Last season, Boston thrived off a double big lineup of Williams and Horford.

But with Timelord spending a big chunk of the start of the 2022-23 NBA season recovering after knee surgery, the Celtics had been using Derrick White in his place. With their backs against the wall, Boston head coach Joe Mazzulla made a gutsy call that paid dividends on defense, a move that had Marcus Smart “estatic”.

Did Marcus Smart cast shade on Joe Mazzulla’s coaching of the Boston Celtics after their Game 6 win?

Or did the Flower Mount native tip Boston’s hand to a more collaborative approach when it comes to tactics?

It was a risky move for Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla to go back to a double big lineup putting Al Horford and Robert Williams III in the starting lineup for a must-win Game 6 of their East semis series with the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday night, but it paid dividends with a win, and veteran point guard Marcus Smart couldn’t be happier about it. “I was ecstatic about it,” said the Flower Mound native postgame via CLNS Media.

“To be able to have Rob in there, he changes the game a lot, being able to have a lob threat, a rim threat, to be able to protect the rim on the other end,” added Smart. “He’s huge for us, and I was proud to have him on the court.”

“That just goes to show Joe (Mazzula)’s learning, just like all of us,” continued the Oklahoma State alum. I know he’s been killed a lot – rightfully so.”

“He needs to make some adjustments, and he did that, and that’s just all you can ask for; just continue to be the best that he can be. And it takes a full team effort.”

The candor on where Mazzulla is in terms of getting a feel for high-level playoff coaching might have taken many of us aback, but with the first-year coach learning the finer details of his position on the fly, Smart’s comments are likely more indicative of a solid internal relationship for the team than of any unease finding its way to the press inadvertently.

Celtics Lab 190: Boston snatches victory from the jaws of defeat in Game 6 with Greg Brueck-Cassoli

Despite things coming a bit unglued for much of the middle of the game, Tatum getting hot from 3 late saved the season and perhaps more.

With the Boston Celtics’ season — and perhaps much more — on the brink in Game 6 of their 2023 Eastern Conference semifinals series with the Philadelphia 76ers, the Celtics needed to put it all out on the court for a win. And somehow, despite a 0-of-10 first half for Jayson Tatum that saw the Duke alum put up just one make from the floor in the third quarter and 18 turnovers for the team, Boston did exactly that.

A shift back to the defense-first, double-big lineup of Al Horford and Robert Williams III paid early dividends, and despite things coming a bit unglued for much of the middle of the game, Tatum getting hot from 3 late saved the season and perhaps more.

To talk about the improbable, dramatic win for the Celtics, the hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast linked up with High Off the Glass’ Greg Brueck-Cassoli.

We also (very) briefly touch on the other series around the 2023 NBA Playoffs and look ahead to Game 7 on Mother’s Day at TD Garden.
