Hawks guard Dejounte Murray suspended, will miss Game 5 in Boston

Dejounte Murray has been suspended for Game 5 of Hawks-Celtics after making contact with a game official Sunday night.

The NBA announced a one-game suspension for Atlanta Hawks guard Dejounte Murray after an incident involving a referee in the final moments of a Game 4 Boston Celtics victory Sunday evening. Murray will miss Game 5 Tuesday night in Boston, where the Celtics have a chance to close out the series.

In a press release, the league said Murray was suspended for “making inappropriate contact with and verbally abusing a game official.” Footage of the incident seems to back that assessment up, though its not yet clear what triggered the confrontation in the moment or what was said.

Murray is one of Atlanta’s top scoring weapons, averaging 25.3 points and 5.8 assists per game. Replacing his offensive output in a must-win game will prove an immense challenge for the Hawks, and may be a big opportunity for the Celtics.

Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum combine for 62 points in Celtics’ Game 4 win over the Hawks

The pair of Celtics wings put on a show against the Atlanta Hawks in Game 4 of their first-round series against their Eastern Conference foes to the tune of 62 points combined with 31 each.

Few duos in the NBA history have been better at putting points on the board than star Boston Celtics forwards Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. The pair of Celtics wings put on a show against the Atlanta Hawks in Game 4 of their first-round series, combining for 62 points (31 each).

Tatum also had 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 blocks to complete his night. Brown contributed 4 boards and 3 assists to help give Boston a 3-1 series lead over an Atlanta squad that provided more resistance to the Celtics than many were expecting.

Jayson Tatum on how the Boston Celtics are using the lessons of last year’s title run to power another

Last year’s anguish is now this season’s fuel.

In the NBA playoffs, effectively communicating with the officials refereeing the game is something of an art form. While it can also be done from the podium more effectively than complaining on the floor, there are ways for players to get their message across in the game that will have a better effect than jawing the ref’s ear off or griping over every slight.

And as with many things he and his Boston Celtics picked up in their last run to the finals, Jayson Tatum has been mastering the finer points of how to put an exclamation point on a missed call without making it personal.

Late in the Celtics’ Game 4 win over the Atlanta Hawks at State Farm Arena on Sunday night, Tatum got hooked by multiple Atlanta players on his way in for a dunk and took a hard fall as a result.

PHOTOS – Boston at Atlanta, Game 4: Celtics survive desperate Hawks to win 129-121

Let’s take a look at some of the best plays captured in images from the Celtics’ Game 4 at the Hawks in the first round of the ’23 playoffs.

The Boston Celtics neglected their rebounding and defensive intensity more generally in Game 3 of their first-round series against the Atlanta Hawks on Friday and knew they would need to up their play in those areas to come away with a win in Game 4.

And that’s what Boston did for most of the game to get a 129-121 win and a 3-1 series lead against the Hawks save for some loose play in the third frame as seems to be the Celtics’ style. Big games from Jayson Tatum (31 points, 7 rebounds, 3 blocks), Jaylen Brown (31 points), and Robert Williams III (13 points, a career-high 15 boards, 2 steals, and 2 blocks) carried the day for the Celtics, with Marcus Smart (19 points), Derrick White (18 points), and Malcolm Brogdon (14 points) picking up the slack.

Let’s take a look at some of the best plays captured in images from the Celtics’ Game 4 at the Hawks in the first round of the ’23 playoffs.

Six Celtics score in double figures as Celtics grab 129-121 Game 4 win

Boston’s offense was firing on all cylinders in Game 4, allowing the Celtics to grab a loud 129-121 road victory in Atlanta.

The Boston Celtics took a commanding 3-1 series lead over the Atlanta Hawks Sunday night with a 129-121 win on the road. The Celtics now have a chance to punch their ticket to the next round if they can grab a win on Tuesday.

Six Celtics players scored 13 points or more, and Boston’s offensive approach was smooth and consistent. On the other side of the ball, we saw a little bend to the defense, but it never came too close to breaking, in part thanks to a few key tweaks from head coach Joe Mazzulla. All told, it was all Boston in Game 3, even if things were at times a bit close for comfort.

Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown combined for 62 points and closed the game exceptionally well. But really it was the other guys in green who helped secure the win. Here’s what you missed from a 129-121 Celtics win in Game 3 of the opening round.

Jayson Tatum says Boston should be in a ‘constant conversation about making adjustments’ vs. Hawks

Taking care of the ball and rebounding are paramount concerns for the Celtics, per Tatum.

The Boston Celtics were caught off guard by the Atlanta Hawks’ physical defense and perimeter-oriented offense in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference Playoffs series, and know they need to dial up their own physicality and intensity in response.

Speaking with the media in advance of Game 4 (via CLNS Media), Boston’s Jayson Tatum related that the Celtics need to have a “constant conversation about making adjustments” given what they saw on Friday could change again. The Celtics need to keep “doing what we’re doing already, just doing it better.”

“We had a few games where we did rebound well and take care of the ball, and then the last game (vs. Atlanta in Game 3), we didn’t so much.”

“In order for us to win, those areas we have to be really good in,” added Tatum.

Regarding the urgency among the Celtics after the Hawks won a game in the series to pull it to 2-1 in the series so far, the Duke alumnus shared that “we’ve got to give (Atlanta) credit, they played well last game; they made shots, they made big-time plays. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy”

“Essentially, (we had to) move on from last game, and we’ve got a good opportunity tonight to get back on track.”

Could Joel Embiid be out injured at the start of the next round?

It would not be an auspicious start if the Celtics advance.

Injuries — as they almost always do — are leaving their mark on the 2023 NBA playoffs, and the Eastern Conference postseason is no exception. The Milwaukee Bucks are dealing with a back injury to star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo. Perhaps worse for the Philadelphia 76ers, star big man Joel Embiid is staring at the possibility of starting a series against the Boston Celtics injured.

Dealing with a sprained knee, Embiid could need to miss time even if it is a light sprain. With the Sixers sweeping the Brooklyn Nets, they get a bit of rest before the Celtics likely dispatch the Atlanta Hawks.

Will the Philadelphia star have enough time to recover before the next round starts? Or could he be on the bench for Game 1 of the second round?

The hosts of the CLNS Media “Garden Report” podcast recently got together to talk it over, as well as to preview Game 4 of the Boston-Atlanta series.

Boston Celtics at Atlanta Hawks: How to watch, broadcast, lineups (Game 4)

Was Game 3 Atlanta’s best, or are the Hawks a more dangerous team than they seemed?

The Boston Celtics have lost their first contest of the 2023 NBA Playoffs in their Game 3 tilt playing the Atlanta Hawks on Friday, but hope to get back on track with a road win vs. the Hawks on Sunday evening. Atlanta will push to make the most of playing at home to try and tie up the series before play shifts back to TD Garden for Game 5.

Celtics’ Joe Mazzulla on what went wrong defensively in Boston’s Game 3 loss to Atlanta

“We let some of their roll guys get hot,” explained Mazzulla.

The Atlanta Hawks have made their first-round series with the Boston Celtics an interesting one with a major boost off the bench in the game’s second quarter, to the chagrin of Celtics fans everywhere. Boston taking their foot off the gas on defense against a desperate Hawks squad was the likely culprit. Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla revealed his take on what went wrong on Friday evening.

“We let some of their roll guys get hot,” explained Mazzulla to the media postgame via CLNS Media. “I thought the second quarter dictated the game where (Bogdan) Bogdanovic and (Saddiq) Bey made a huge difference when Trae Young went out.”

“I thought that gave them life, and I thought they played a pretty complete game,” he added. “In a close game like that, you not only want to focus on the end of the game, but you want to focus on the runs that led to that.”

“I think the slip-ups (on Boston’s end) came from their roll guys,” Mazzulla later explained. “The first two games, we gave them some open shots that they missed.”

“I thought those guys knocked them down tonight, and then they capitalize on those second chance opportunities for 23 points. So, I thought it was a combination of those two things.”
