Can we trust this version of the Boston Celtics not to repeat the mistakes that have cost them a title in the past?

Is there a reason for concern, or should it just be chalked up to a lack of execution? Have the Celtics learned from their past mistakes?

Can we trust this version of the Boston Celtics not to repeat the mistakes that have cost them an NBA title in the past? The hosts of the semi-eponymous CLNS Media “Bob Ryan and Jeff Goodman Podcast with Gary Tanguay” recently explored the unnerving potentiality.

While Bob Ryan voices his lack of trust in the team, Jeff Goodman believes that you can’t put too much stock into the final closing stretch of an otherwise solid performance. Is there a reason for concern, or should it just be chalked up to a lack of execution? Have the Celtics learned from their past mistakes?

Bob, Jeff and Gary react to the Celtic’s collapse in Game 5 against the Atlanta Hawks more generally, as well.

To hear what the trio had to say about Boston’s potential to get their act together, check out the clip embedded above.

Can Celtics fans trust Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown to lead Boston back to the NBA Finals?

After losing in six games to the Golden State Warriors in 2022, one would think that the Celtics would have approached this series with a greater sense of urgency.

In light of the Boston Celtics’ 119-117 loss to Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks in Game 5 of their first-round Eastern Conference postseason series, can fans of the Celtics trust Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown to lead Boston back to the NBA Finals?

After losing in six games to the Golden State Warriors in 2022, one would think the Celtics would have approached this series with a greater sense of urgency than they have demonstrated. How will the Celtics find a way to bounce back in Game 6 against the Hawks at home?

The host of the semi-eponymous “Hoops Tonight with Jayson Timpf” weighed in on this topic for a recent segment of his podcast.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to see what Timpf thinks of the Celtics’ playoff potential in light of the Hawks stumble.

Boston Celtics at Atlanta Hawks: How to watch, broadcast, lineups (Game 6)

The Celtics hope to shake off an embarrassing collapse against the Hawks in Game 5 to close out their series at State Farm Arena and advance to a second-round series with the 76ers.

The Boston Celtics hope to shake off an embarrassing collapse against the Atlanta Hawks in Game 5 to close out their series at State Farm Arena and advance to a second-round series with the Philadelphia 76ers. Atlanta plans to push for their playoff lives with guard Dejounte Murray returning to the team after a one-game suspension at home.

If you happen to be looking for a way to watch the on-court action live on cable television or a local or national online streaming service, keep reading while we get you up to speed on everything else you need to know about the game.

Let’s begin with the players available to play.

Celtics Lab 184: A look around and ahead in the playoffs, and some Game 5 grumbles

After an embarrassing Game 5 loss, we elected to focus more on the postseason ahead (we hope) for Boston.

The Boston Celtics told us they were not messing around this time, and like Lucy and her football in “Peanuts,” we fell for it once again. The Celtics mailed in their Game 5 performance against the Atlanta Hawks in the first round.

While we’d be remiss to avoid it altogether, on the latest episode of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast, we elected to focus more on the postseason ahead (we hope) for Boston.

While we certainly say our piece on what went wrong in Game 5, we’re more concerned about the games ahead of the Celtics in the remaining tilts of their series with Atlanta, a potential second-round collision with the Philadelphia 76ers, and how injuries and unexpected twists are reshaping the narrative of the 2023 NBA postseason before our very eyes.

Is the path to the finals really opening for Boston, or is it exactly the sort of scenario that tends to bring out the worst in the Celtics? Who will end up in the conference finals? And how is the West’s postseason playing out?

We also get into things much bigger than basketball, from accountability and second chances in the NBA to honoring those who’ve shared the best of themselves with us along the way.

Is Jayson Tatum to blame for the Boston Celtics’ Game 5 loss to the Atlanta Hawks?

The Celtics have two more chances to make fans and media forget about their complaints, but in the postseason, there are very few real opportunities to change course — and this is one of them.

Is Jayson Tatum to blame for the Boston Celtics’ Game 5 loss to the Atlanta Hawks?

Days removed from claiming the Celtics would not make things harder on themselves by playing down to their opponents and risk losing key games in their pursuit of the team’s 18th banner, the Celtics did exactly that.

A fair portion of the blame has to fall in the St. Louis native’s lap as the ostensible top star of the team. Some ought to go to star teammate Jaylen Brown, head coach Joe Mazzulla, veteran point guard Marcus Smart and the rest of the team’s supporting cast.

But more than anyone else, Tatum put himself out there as the voice of reason, and now he looks the fool for having done so in light of his and his team’s play on Tuesday.

The Celtics have two more chances to make fans and media forget about their complaints, but in the postseason, there are very few real opportunities to change course — and this is one of them.

To talk it over, the hosts of the CLNS Media “Garden Report” podcast put together a clip diving into whether the former Duke standout should shoulder the lion’s share of the blame — check it out above.

Jaylen Brown remains focused despite Boston’s epic Game 5 collapse

Jaylen Brown kept his composure and focus Tuesday night despite an ugly Game 5 loss for his Boston Celtics.

The Boston Celtics choked away Game 5 to the Atlanta Hawks in pretty epic fashion, ultimately falling 119-117. Trae Young and the Hawks outscored the Celtics 37-25 in the final quarter, extending Atlanta’s season and forcing the action back to Georgia.

By many measures this was a historic loss for Boston, and the Celtics were outscored 20-6 in crunch time. Given the team’s championship aspirations, this was a real hole in the boat for players, coaches, and fans. The mood after the loss was somber, though there were scantly signs of panic or worry. All-Star forward Jaylen Brown was particularly resolute in his postgame comments.

“There’s definitely a lot of emotion,” Brown said. ” Up twelve and we smoked the game. But my mind set and mentality is to get ready for the next one.”

Time for the Boston Celtics to play like champions or book a beach vacation

Let’s be honest, a team that plays like the Celtics did in Game 5 isn’t winning tic-tac-toe, never mind a title.

Why did the Boston Celtics lose a key Game 5 closeout tilt in which they were up by 13 points in the fourth quarter?

“Careless mistakes from all of us that came back to bite us in the end. I’m sure we wish we could have back,” Jayson Tatum said.

“We had some bonehead plays, some fouls and gave them some opportunities to get going,” Jaylen Brown offered.

So, the Celtics were not only admittedly careless but were so in a way that actively aided their opponent. And they know it.

If Jayson Tatum is the leader of this team, at least in terms of setting an example, to go 1-of-10 from beyond the arc immediately after saying that the Celtics (per MassLive’s Brian Robb) must “go in there with the mindset that we (have to) win to survive” is disrespectful.

Disrespectful to his teammates for lying to them. Disrespectful to the fans for not giving his best effort when it counts. And disrespectful to the legacy of the team that he plays for by treating one of 16 potential postseason wins needed to hang Banner 18 like a contest in the middle of November.

The St. Louis native (and head coach Joe Mazzulla, Brown and the rest of the team) ought to try “just being aware of learning from … mistakes from last year that made the road a little tougher,” a wise man once said.

Despite the Celtics’ wishes for a mulligan on Game 5, that’s not how the playoffs work. Win or go home. Right now, it’s looking like Boston’s destiny is far more likely the latter.

Please, prove us wrong.

Trae Young dagger puts Boston on ice, Celtics drop Game 5 119-117

Atlanta outscored Boston 37-25 in the fourth quarter on Tuesday as the Celtics choked away a Game 5 victory and a chance to advance to the next round.

The Atlanta Hawks overcame a 13-point Boston Celtics lead in Game 5, grabbing a 119-117 and sending the series back to Georgia. Boston will now need to wait until at least Thursday to punch their ticket to the Eastern Conference Semifinals and a chance at Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers.

Boston was riding high for most of the game, and Jaylen Brown in particular was quite good for the Celtics. After 23 first half points, Brown finished the game with 35 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists. Unfortunately, he and the Celtics unraveled a bit in the fourth quarter. Atlanta outscored Boston 37-25 in the final frame, punctuated by a deep 3-point shot from Trae Young in the final moments of the game.

The Celtics still have two chances to grab a win and advance to the next round of the postseason. Losing tonight doesn’t necessarily change the team’s path forward, but does delay the next chapter. Here’s what you may have missed from Boston’s 119-117 Game 5 loss to Atlanta.

PHOTOS – Atlanta at Boston, Game 5: Unserious Celtics collapse, lose 119-117

Let’s take a look at some of the best plays captured in images from the Celtics’ Game 5 at the Hawks in the first round of the ’23 playoffs.

The Boston Celtics hoped to get the Atlanta Hawks to say “3-2-1 Cancun!” by the end of Game 5 of their first-round series, but by the end of the game, it looked more like the Celtics were the team who just got sent fishing, losing the tilt 119-117 with a half-hearted effort that fell apart late in the fourth and recalled the pathetic collapse of the team against the Golden State Warriors in the 2022 NBA Finals.

Jaylen Brown put up 35 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists, with unsatisfactory games from Jayson Tatum (19 points, 8 boards, and 8 assists), and Derrick White (18 points, 5 rebounds) making Boston look like a team that will be a footnote in the story of whoever actually wins the title this season.

Let’s take a look at some of the best plays captured in images from the Celtics’ Game 5 at the Hawks in the first round of the ’23 playoffs.

Are the Boston Celtics now the favorites to come out of the Eastern Conference?

With virtually unmatched roster depth and (knock on wood) very good health overall, the Celtics seem poised to advance back to the 2023 NBA Finals.

With injuries dinging Philadelphia 76ers big man Joel Embiid and Milwaukee Bucks star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, are the Boston Celtics now the default favorite to come out of the NBA’s Eastern Conference playoffs?

With virtually unmatched roster depth and (knock on wood) very good health overall, the Celtics seem poised to return to the 2023 NBA Finals this year. They will of course need to play the games to get there and stay healthy themselves, but is there any other team that could beat them to the punch?

On the latest edition of the ESPN “CJ McCollum Show,” the eponymous host and New Orleans Pelicans star and co-host Izzy Gutierrez debated this question.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what they had to say about Boston’s path to the NBA Finals.
