Who are the top remaining options for the Boston Celtics in free agency?

Boston needs to find players willing to take a pay cut for a chance to compete for a championship.

The NBA’s new collective bargaining agreement was designed to punish high-spending clubs such as the Boston Celtics. The idea is to make it fairer for the other teams to acquire top-shelf talent. As a result, to fill out remaining roster spots, Boston needs to find players willing to take a pay cut for a chance to compete for a championship.

With the pool of free agents worth signing getting more shallow by the hour, the Celtics need to look at players such as Hamidou Diallo, Kelly Oubre, Christian Wood, Terence Ross, JaMychael Green and T.J. Warren in the hopes of finding the right role player able to help them win some games on the cheap.

To talk over how that might go down in practice, the hosts of the CLNS Media “A-List” podcast recently convened to discuss Boston’s free agency options.

What sort of players does this team need to fit Mazzulla Ball in its full fruition? Which players who are still unsigned might fit that bill?

The Boston Celtics are evaluating players who could fill the last regular and two-way slots on their roster for the 2023-24 NBA season. The decisions will shape the team’s strategic direction under head coach Joe Mazzulla’s offense-oriented leadership this season and beyond.

What sort of players fit Mazzulla Ball? Which still unsigned players might fit that bill?

The hosts of the “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast talked over prospective free agent additions for the end of the team’s roster.

Analyzing three potential Boston Celtics free agent targets

The potential free agent market for the Boston Celtics to finish their 2023 offseason team building has shrunk greatly in recent days, but a trio of potential options are still left on the board.

The potential free agent market for the Boston Celtics to finish their 2023 offseason team building has shrunk greatly in recent days, but a trio of potential options are still left on the board, some of whom have ties to the franchise.

The trio consists of Hamidou Diallo from the Detroit Pistons; Javonte Green, a former Celtic and a player the Celtics reportedly have an interest in; and Austin Rivers, who has a history with the Celtics due to his father, Doc Rivers, being a former coach for the team as well as a brief stint on a Boston roster.

The hosts of the “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast talked over the merits and faults of each in terms of their fit with Boston on a recent episode.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear their thoughts on these three free agents.

What unsigned free agents might make sense for the Boston Celtics?

The Boston Celtics’ roster for the 2023-24 campaign ahead is incomplete, with at minimum a regular roster spot and a two way deal to fill.

The NBA’s 2023 Las Vegas Summer League is over, and, just like that, we are plunged into the darkness of the league’s true offseason: the summer doldrums.

However, the Boston Celtics‘ roster for the 2023-24 campaign is incomplete. At minimum, a regular roster spot and a two-way deal remain vacant, and some spicy free agents are still without a home.

Join the hosts of the CLNS Media “First to the Floor” podcast as they discuss the free agent targets the Cs are likely looking at for as many as three regular roster slots and a two way deal.

Plus, they reflect on Dallas Mavericks forward Grant Williams’ parting words to the team that drafted him, and Joel Embiid learning the truth about the Philadelphia 76ers in the clip embedded below.

Celtics Lab 207: Sorting through the best remaining options for Boston team building

The Boston Celtics are likely to be nearing the finish line when it comes to team building for the 2023 offseason, with limited spending power for a shrinking pool of potential free agent signings.

The Boston Celtics are likely nearing the finish line of the 2023 offseason, given their limited spending power and shrinking pool of potential free agent signings.

While trades big and small remain on the table for reshaping the Celtics’ roster for the 2023-24 NBA season, signs are starting hint this is close to Boston’s finished roster until the trade deadline, at least.

That is not to say that there are some options still unsigned who could provide some real help to the Celtics’ designs on contention, so the hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast sat down and worked their way through the best remaining free agents to identify which ones make the most sense for the team.

We also get into the ongoing Jaylen Brown supermax extension saga and some Las Vegas Summer League-adjacent chatter catching up on the also-shrinking flow of news as we inch closer to the doldrums of the offseason.

Washburn: Boston Celtics ‘have shown interest’ in free agent guard Austin Rivers

Per the Globe, Rivers “is looking for more than a mentor role.”

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8169″]

The Boston Celtics are in the market for some depth on the wing and some ball handling, and they may have their eyes on an unrestricted free agent veteran who could bring both to Boston roster for the 2023-24 season according to new reporting from the Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn.

Per the Globe reporter, a “free agent looking for work is veteran guard Austin Rivers, whom the Celtics have shown interest. Rivers was technically a member of the Celtics organization previously. He was part of a 2015 deal that traded him to Boston from the New Orleans Pelicans and Jeff Green to the Memphis Grizzlies, but Rivers was quickly dealt again to the Los Angeles Clippers as part of the swap that brought Shavlik Randolph to the Celtics.

Son of the 2008 title head coach Doc Rivers, Austin last played with the Timberwolves, and, per Washburn, “is looking for more than a mentor role.”

“Rivers is likely one of those players who will be squeezed out of the free-agent market and seeking an NBA minimum contract,” adds the Globe reporter, which is about the level of spending power Boston has left given the team’s proximity to the dreaded second apron.

The 10 best remaining free agents the Boston Celtics can sign

Let’s take a look at some of the best remaining free agents who the Celtics could consider signing.

The Boston Celtics are coming off a disappointing campaign that ended in elimination by the Miami Heat in the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals just when Boston hoped to get back to the NBA Finals. Since then, team president Brad Stevens has shaken up the roster by bringing on star big man Kristaps Porzingis while letting go of Marcus Smart and Grant Williams.

The team has made depth signings with Oshae Brissett and Dalano Banton, but the Celtics still need to address a few key areas. Chief among them is a point guard able to step into a bigger role if needed, but Boston now also needs depth at the guard, wing, forward, and big positions as well with between one and three roster spots pending team decisions on non-guaranteed players.

Let’s take a look at some of the best remaining free agents who the Celtics could consider signing on minimum deals to such an end.

In this exercise, we have omitted players who will likely earn more than a minimum deal given the Celtics’ proximity to the second apron.

Free agency targets for the Boston Celtics’ last roster spot

The Boston Celtics are down to a single open roster spot they will almost certainly be making use of for the looming 2023-24 NBA season.

The Boston Celtics are down to a single open roster spot they will almost certainly fill ahead of the 2023-24 NBA season.

Who are some targets for the Celtics? With Boston needing to squeeze every last drop of value out of their signings, such a move — even if for a minimum contract player — takes on far more importance than in seasons past now that the league is using the new, more punitive collective bargaining agreement.

The hosts of the “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast sat down and put their heads together on a recent episode to float some potential Celtics additions to help shore up weaknesses on a roster with designs on contention.

Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what they had to say about which free agents might make the most sense in Boston next season.

Could Boston add Christian Wood or Kelly Oubre on minimums? Two prominent NBA analysts float the idea

It is not uncommon for players to elect to sign on a discounted deal for the possibility of a role well beyond what their salaries would otherwise suggest.

As the available cap space around the NBA begins to dry up several days after the start of the league’s 2023 free agency period, players finding themselves on the wrong end of the Association’s annual fiscal version of the game of musical chairs will have to find the best possible fit for their skillset on a contract often much smaller than they were initially hoping.

In such scenarios, it is not uncommon for players to elect to sign on a discounted deal for the possibility of a role well beyond what their salaries would otherwise suggest, which ought to catch the eye of Boston Celtics fans.

And with a number of quality free agents looking at minimum deals or perhaps part of a midlevel exception, NBA analysts have been trying to project where some of the bigger remaining names might go.

Catching up with the Boston Celtics’ 2023 free agency so far

What is coming next for Boston?

After a handful of signings by the Boston Celtics early in the NBA’s 2023 free agency period, the storied franchise has started adding depth with the additions of forward Oshae Brissett and point guard Dalano Banton.

They also secured new star Celtics center Kristaps Porzingis with a two-year, $60 million extension.

What is coming next for Boston?

Why haven’t we heard an update on star forward Jaylen Brown’s $295 million supermax extension? And what’s up with rumblings about his fellow star on the wing, Jayson Tatum, recruiting Portland Trail Blazers star point guard Dame Lillard to the Celtics?

Join the hosts of the CLNS Media “Vitamin Cs” podcast as they sit down to discuss the latest Celtics moves in free agency and what else may be going on with Brown and what seems like a no-brainer deal to most of us in the clip embedded below.
