ESPN somehow mistakenly said Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is from Cuba after Home Run Derby win

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is a Canadian-Dominican slugger.

Toronto Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. won the 2023 MLB Home Run Derby but it didn’t come without an awkward hiccup.

After the victory, ESPN’s broadcast produced a lower-third graphic that indicated Guerrero Jr. joined Yoenis Cespedes as the second Cuban-born player to ever win the MLB All-Star Weekend Contest.

The problem, however, is that Guerrero Jr. is not actually from Cuba. Guerrero Jr. was born in Montréal, Quebec in Canada when his father, Vladimir Guerrero Sr., played for the Expos. His father is also not from Cuba but from the Dominican Republic.

Guerrero Jr. has a Canadian passport and birth certificate. Growing up, meanwhile, he split his time between Santiago and Don Gregorio in the Dominican Republic and in the United States with his father.

Guerrero Jr. joins his father as well as Sammy Sosa, Miguel Tejada, David Ortiz and Juan Soto as Home Run Derby Champions from the Dominican Republic.

Perhaps what happened is that ESPN loaded up the wrong graphic and was instead prepared for a Randy Arozarena victory. Arozarena, unlike Guerrero Jr., is actually from Cuba.

Shohei Ohtani drew a ridiculous crowd for media day ahead of the 2023 MLB All-Star Game

Now, THAT is a crowd.

When it comes to Shohei Ohtani, he’s no stranger to having a large contingent of media following him for every game. But MLB All-Star week is totally different. Everyone wanted to speak to Ohtani.

For many media members across baseball, the All-Star Game is a rare opportunity to ask Ohtani questions outside of a series involving the Angels. And let me tell you: Reporters were not about to miss out on a chance to speak to the two-way superstar.

Ohtani participated in media day festivities at T-Mobile Park in Seattle on Monday, and the scene around his desk was absolutely unreal. You almost couldn’t see him in the enormous crowd.

Even by Ohtani standards, that crowd was ridiculous. But that was to be expected as he heads into free agency this offseason.

The Angels star is not planning to pitch in the All-Star Game as he’s been dealing with a blister. He also won’t participate in the Home Run Derby. But as the American League’s starting designated hitter, he’ll get some at-bats on Tuesday night.

The complete list of 2023 MLB All-Star Game injury replacements, including Julio Rodriguez

Some big names are stepping in for injured stars.

The National League and American League rosters for the 2023 MLB All-Star Game included so much baseball talent that it couldn’t fit in everyone who deserved a spot.

But fear not! Some of the biggest snubs will get in because of injuries to the stars who won’t make it to T-Mobile Park in Seattle next week. There are already a bunch of players who have been named as alternates for the game, including two Mariners, which should make the hometown crowd very happy.

Here’s the list of all the injury replacements, along with the stars they’ll be replacing in the Midsummer Classic:

MLB All-Star 2023 starting lineups for the AL and NL

Here are the starting lineups for the National and American Leagues.

Although it would have been super cool to have Shohei Ohtani hit for the American League AND be the starting pitcher, it wasn’t going to happen given his blister situation.

But he will be the starting designated hitter for the AL squad, with New York Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole starting the Midseason Classic on Tuesday. On the National League side? It’ll be leading MVP candidate Ronald Acuna Jr. leading off and Zac Gallen (who leads the NL with 11 wins, a 2.77 FIP and 1.048 WHIP) on the mound.

The rest of the lineups? Check them out below as we get set for the game in Seattle, and here are the injury replacements and full rosters for both teams.

Home Run Derby pitchers: Here who’s throwing to the All-Star sluggers in 2023

Here’s the full list of who’s throwing to each 2023 Home Run Derby slugger on Monday.

The field is set for the 2023 Home Run Derby in Seattle’s T-Mobile Park on Monday night, but it’s just as important to know who’s tossing them the baseballs they have to hit out.

That’s because we’ve seen how important it’s been to have consistency — hello, Pete Alonso’s pitcher — and when it’s a problem to have pitches go all over the place (see: Ronald Acuna Jr.’s pitcher last year).

So if you’re wondering who’s tossing to which star at the plate on Monday? You’ve come to the right place.

Here’s the full list of Home Run Derby pitchers as we get set for all the action:

The 2023 MLB All-Star rosters’ 8 biggest snubs: Where’s Fernando Tatis Jr.?

Some names having a huge season who were left off the 2023 MLB All-Star rosters.

The full list of 2023 MLB All-Star players on the American and National League rosters — including the starters — and we’ve got some stars having awesome seasons who got left out.

Of course this happens every year in every sport: Inevitably, some talent gets left out for one reason (roster size) or another (in this case, it doesn’t help that every MLB team needs to be represented).

So let’s go over some of the guys left out, and maybe if there’s an injury or any other reason a player has to bow out, this list will provide some good replacements.

Here we go, in no particular order:

The 2023 MLB All-Star jerseys are in and the reviews are mixed

What’s your take on these?

The 2023 MLB All-Star Game jerseys are here, with a distinct Seattle flavor to them with the American League facing the National League at T-Mobile Park, home of the Mariners.

The unis include some of the same colors worn by the Mariners in the Pacific Northwest, and while the lettering isn’t bad, the “A” in each of the words “American” and “National” being replaced by a modified MLB logo makes them look censored: AMERIC-N!

Some fans thought they looked meh after they were revealed on Friday, as the leadup to the 2023 Midsummer Classic begins. Here’s a roundup of the reaction:

MLB All-Star Game starters: The 2023 NL and AL list, including Shohei Otani and Ronald Acuna

Here are the starters you’ll see in Seattle next month.

Of course the two runaway MVP candidates — for the moment — in the American and National Leagues will be starters in the 2023 MLB All-Star Game set for July 11 at T-Mobile Park, home of the Seattle Mariners.

Los Angeles Angels slugger/pitcher Shohei Ohtani and Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna were already the first two to take spots as starters in the AL and NL, respectively, thanks to MLB’s voting process.

We found out the rest of the starters on Thursday night, as the clock ticks down to the Midsummer Classic. Here’s the full list after the announcements:

See the 2023 MLB All-Star Game hats for all 30 teams from New Era

Here are the hats for every team at the 2023 MLB All-Star Game.

The 2023 MLB All-Star Game is in Seattle this year, so of course the theme you’ll see in this year’s crop of hats the players will wear has some mountain flavor to it.

New Era delivered not one but two hats: One for the game itself, which have a minty color and a graphic with some mountains on it. The other? It’s the workout hat that looks very similar to what players wear for a typical game, except there’s a star near the logo (get it? All-Stars get stars).

Take a look at all 60 hats — two for each team — and you can click the links below to purchase them from Fanatics:
