ESPN somehow mistakenly said Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is from Cuba after Home Run Derby win

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is a Canadian-Dominican slugger.

Toronto Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. won the 2023 MLB Home Run Derby but it didn’t come without an awkward hiccup.

After the victory, ESPN’s broadcast produced a lower-third graphic that indicated Guerrero Jr. joined Yoenis Cespedes as the second Cuban-born player to ever win the MLB All-Star Weekend Contest.

The problem, however, is that Guerrero Jr. is not actually from Cuba. Guerrero Jr. was born in Montréal, Quebec in Canada when his father, Vladimir Guerrero Sr., played for the Expos. His father is also not from Cuba but from the Dominican Republic.

Guerrero Jr. has a Canadian passport and birth certificate. Growing up, meanwhile, he split his time between Santiago and Don Gregorio in the Dominican Republic and in the United States with his father.

Guerrero Jr. joins his father as well as Sammy Sosa, Miguel Tejada, David Ortiz and Juan Soto as Home Run Derby Champions from the Dominican Republic.

Perhaps what happened is that ESPN loaded up the wrong graphic and was instead prepared for a Randy Arozarena victory. Arozarena, unlike Guerrero Jr., is actually from Cuba.

July Sports Betting Calendar: NBA Summer League, The Open Championship and MLB All-Star Week

No NBA or NHL playoffs? No problem.

If you thought the June conclusion of the 2021-22 NBA and NHL seasons meant less to bet on in July, you thought wrong. Not only do the MLB and WNBA seasons roll along this month, leading into their respective All-Star breaks — which includes the Home Run Derby — but the NBA keeps the momentum going too with summer league action.

The solo sports also keep things interesting, as Wimbledon crowns its singles champions on July 9 and 10, and The Open Championship is competed in the following days.

Those are just a few of the highlights in a month filled with them. Here’s a look at all of that and more.

Pete Alonso will attempt to defend 2019 Home Run Derby crown

The Polar Bear, as he is affectionately called, will have some stiff competition this year including two-way Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani, who is tied for the MLB lead in homers with 23.

Former Florida baseball star Pete Alonso announced Wednesday that he will try to defend his Home Run Derby crown in Denver next month. The New York Mets first baseman won the event in 2019 when he outslugged Toronto Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. 23-22 in the final round.

“I had so much fun during the first one, so I was like, ‘You know what? Let’s do it again,'” Alonso said, according to MLB.com. “I just had a blast.”

Alonso also hasn’t sent too many baseballs out of the yard with only 11 this season. But the Derby is being held at Coors Field, where he’s homered three times in six games. Regardless of how many home runs he has, Alonso is guaranteed to be the top seed in the event because he is the defending champion.

He will try to be the fourth player to win the Derby twice. Alonso sits sixth in All-Star voting among National League first basemen, but he doesn’t need to be an All-Star to compete.
