Grading the Nets’ moves after the NBA trade deadline

Now that the 2023-24 NBA trade deadline has passed, here are the grades of all the trades that the Brooklyn Nets did before the deadline.

The Brooklyn Nets had been one of the main teams discussed when it came to franchises that were looking for different possibilities during the trade deadline. After seeing what transpired on Thursday, it’s safe to say that Brooklyn had a rather uneventful deadline.

The Nets began the deadline by having a quiet first few hours that let many of the Nets fanbase wondering if the organization was going to make any moves. Once the afternoon came around, Brooklyn got started by trading Spencer Dinwiddie to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Dennis Schroder and Thaddeus Young.

In a move related to Brooklyn’s trade with the Raptors, the Nets waived forward/center Harry Giles III as the team was meeting a roster crunch. To end the deadline, the Nets traded Royce O’Neale to the Phoenix Suns as part of a three-team deal with the Memphis Grizzlies that brought three second-round picks and “salaries” back to Brooklyn.

With the Nets’ trade deadline summed up, it’s time to grade all of the moves that Brooklyn made:

Report: Nets trade Royce O’Neale to Suns for 3 second-round picks; salaries

Shams Charania of The Athletic reported Thursday that the Brooklyn Nets are trading Royce O’Neale to the Phoenix Suns for 3 2nd-round picks.

The Brooklyn Nets were approaching a crossroads with the 2023-24 NBA trade deadline of 3 PM ET approaching quickly and with the team having three veterans still on the roster. After dealing Spencer Dinwiddie to the Toronto Raptors earlier in the day, Brooklyn was able to trade away one of the two remaining veterans.

Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium reported on Thursday that the Nets were trading forward Royce O’Neale to the Phoenix Suns for three second-round picks and “salaries”. Charania later reported that this trade was being expanded to include the Memphis Grizzlies.

Charania did not specify what salaries were going to Brooklyn as the term seems to indicate minimum-contract players that the Suns are unloading for salary-matching purposes. In a subsequent report, Charania added that the players that Phoenix is sending out are Keita Bates-Diop, Jordan Goodwin, and Chimezie Metu, but did not specify which players were going to the Nets.

O’Neale, 30, played 125 games for the Nets over the past two seasons after being traded to Brooklyn from the Utah Jazz in the offseason heading into the 2022-23 season in exchange for a first-round pick. He averaged 8.3 points per game and shot 38% from three-point land.

3 players the Nets could bring in based on NBA trade deadline rumors

With the 2023-24 NBA trade deadline on Thursday at 3 PM ET, here are three players that the Brooklyn Nets could bring in.

The Brooklyn Nets have been talked about heavily as the NBA trade deadline on Thursday at 3:00 PM ET is quickly approaching. After starting the season with a 13-10 record, Brooklyn is now saddled at a disappointing 20-30 amidst a host of injuries and roster concerns as the team looks to improve the roster for a potential playoff push.

The Nets have been linked to plenty of players over the course of the past month or so and while there is expected to be less movement because of the new CBA, Brooklyn is predicted to be one of the teams that will be active given their struggles. The Nets also have some tax considerations that they’re keeping in mind as they move forward as well.

Brooklyn is also in an interesting spot in terms of their rebuild as they are not good enough to contend for a title anymore, but have enough talent on the roster to be a playoff team. With that being said, here are three players that the Nets could bring in based on recent trade rumors:

Report: Brooklyn Nets don’t appear to be actively pursuing Dejounte Murray

The Brooklyn Nets reportedly don’t appear to be actively pursuing Atlanta Hawks guard Dejounte Murray with the trade deadline approaching.

The Brooklyn Nets‘ pursuit of a Eastern Conference playoff spot has taken a turn for the worst as the team is finding it hard to win games right now. With the NBA trade deadline less than one month away, it’s worth wondering how Brooklyn addresses its roster through any possible trades that can be made.

Jake Fischer of Yahoo! Sports recently reported that the Nets are considered a potential landing spot for Atlanta Hawks guard Dejounte Murray given how Murray can fill Brooklyn’s need for a lead guard capable of scoring and creating for others.

However, according to what Fischer said he was told by his sources, the Nets and the Hawks have not had significant dialogue on any potential trade at this point in time.

What makes this report interesting is the fact that Brooklyn could go after Murray whether they decide to rebuild or try to compete for a playoff spot given that Murray is still just 27 years old while still filling an immediate need for the franchise.

One thing that’s important to note is that per Fischer, the Nets don’t seem to be actively pursuing Murray right now so it’s still unknown whether Brooklyn will even express serious interest in him at any point over the next month.

Report: Nets want equivalent of two first-round picks for Dorian Finney-Smith

With the Brooklyn Nets looking like sellers, reports suggest that Brooklyn wants the value of two first-round picks for Dorian Finney-Smith.

The Brooklyn Nets are at a point of their season where they may become sellers given how much losing they have done lately. While it’s unknown at the moment which way Brooklyn will lean prior to the NBA trade deadline, there is reporting that lets everyone know what the value of one of their wings would be if traded.

In a recent episode of the HoopsHype podcast, NBA insider Michael Scotto said that from what he’s told, the Nets want the equivalent of two first-round picks in exchange for trading forward Dorian Finney-Smith. Before giving this information, Scotto does note that Brooklyn is “open for business” and are “certainly taking calls” as the deadline approaches.

Coming into this season, the Nets were expected to be one of the teams that would be competing for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. However, after winning just four of their last 16 games, Brooklyn is beginning to look like a team that should be making some trades with the goal of shaking things up one way or another.

While Finney-Smith is a player who is valuable on every team in the league, he most likely is more valuable to the Nets as a trade piece that can help bring in draft picks and/or young players that helps Brooklyn progress through its rebuild. Without much that is definite on which direction the Nets are heading in, time will tell if Finney-Smith will be on the roster after the deadline.

Will the Brooklyn Nets’ roster look different after the trade deadline?

The trade deadline for the 2023-24 NBA season is Feb. 8 and it’s possible that the Brooklyn Nets’ roster could change after that passes.

The trade deadline for the 2023-24 NBA season is Feb. 8 and at this moment, the Brooklyn Nets are at an interesting point in their rebuild. The Nets haven’t done much winning lately and it seems that the roster may need some tweaks if it’s going to be a winning team down the stretch. The question is: will Brooklyn’s roster look different after the deadline?

In a recent episode of “The Lowe Post“, Zach Lowe and Bobby Marks of ESPN discussed different stories around the league, including all of the events going on with the Golden State Warriors. Towards the end of the episode, Lowe and Marks talked about teams to watch for as the trade deadline approaches and the Nets came up around the around 1:42:00 mark.

One thing that the duo agreed on was the feeling that the Nets are going to make some moves at the deadline given how the team has looked recently. Heading into Thursday’s game against the Cleveland Cavaliers in Paris, Brooklyn has won just four of its past 15 games and are in danger of falling out of the playoffs completely.

Lowe and Marks noted that the moves that they feel that the Nets could make would be small ones such as trading Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, and Royce O’Neale. It seems that the feeling around the league is that Brooklyn will probably deal those veterans to make way for players like Cam Thomas, who was recently benched, to see more playing time moving forward.

For example, Lowe mentioned how he would like for the Oklahoma City Thunder to go after Finney-Smith or O’Neale to round out their roster and it appears that those players will receive a lot of interest from around the Association.

While the Nets have not formally come out and say that they are looking to make changes at the deadline, it seems that the best way for them to move forward is to prioritize the future rather than trying to win as many games as they can right now given how much they have been losing lately.
