Overreacting to the Boston Celtics’ 2023-24 preseason

The Celtics are making waves with their preseason performances, particularly the debuts of Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday.

The 2023-24 NBA preseason is in full swing, and fans and analysts alike are getting a taste of what the upcoming season might have in store for the Boston Celtics. Several key performances have caught the attention of basketball enthusiasts.

The Celtics are making waves with their preseason performances, particularly the debuts of Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday, and the Celtics’ experimentation with a double big lineup featuring the former. And a stronger bench than many expected is giving us plenty of things to watch out for in the regular season. There have also been some pretty hefty developments around the league such as the formation of a superteam in the Phoenix Suns and the trade of Damian Lillard to the Milwaukee Bucks.

The folks behind the “A Funky Diabetic” YouTube channel put together a breakdown on all of the above.

Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla on why he’s dialing in on small mistakes in preseason

“There’s nothing more important than holding people to a high standard, especially when you believe in them,” said Mazzulla.

For the Boston Celtics players trying to carve out a role for themselves off of the bench, being ready to dive for loose balls is one of the key little things Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla is looking for from his reserves.

And despite solid play in the preseason so far, backup wing Dalano Banton found this out the hard way in the second half of Boston’s win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday when a slow response to a 50-50 ball got him pulled out of the game. “There’s nothing more important than holding people to a high standard, especially when you believe in them,” said Mazzulla after the game.

“We have a roster of one through 17, and I truly believe that and that was just a good learning opportunity.”

“There was a loose ball and I thought he could have gotten it and so credit to him that he was able to take coaching and he responded really, really well,” added the Celtics coach on Banton’s reaction to the quick hook.

“He’s got a chance to be a really good player in this league, and I love the mentality that he brought to being coached and then responding. It’s super important — I’m thankful that he allowed me to coach him.”

PHOTOS – Boston at Philly: Sixers can’t keep up with Celtics in second preseason tilt, lose 112-101

Despite the Sixers having home court to boost them, a Philly squad sans Joel Embiid and James Harden struggled to keep up with a Boston squad that saw both Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum sit.

The Boston Celtics made the trek to Pennsylvania’s Wells Fargo Center to face the Philadelphia 76ers for a rematch of their home preseason opener win and first tilt of their preseason slate of games, and despite the Sixers having home court to boost them, a Philly roster sans Joel Embiid and James Harden struggled to keep up with a Boston squad that saw both Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum sit.

The Sixers kept it close early, but hot shooting and transition play gave the Celtics a double-digit cushion near the end of the third frame the team never surrendered, winning 112-101.

Let’s take a look at some of the best moments captured in images in the Celtics’ third preseason game of 2023-24 vs. the Philadelphia 76ers.

Eddie House: Celtics’ Payton Pritchard proving himself a threat, leader on the second unit

The Oregon alum’s game vs. New York on Monday night included 21 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals.

In a preseason matchup between the Boston Celtics and the New York Knicks, the focus shifted to the bench depth of both teams in the second half of the exhibition tilt.

Newly extended reserve guard Payton Pritchard emerged as a key player for the Celtics with his first-half play, showing his potential as a leader of the ball club’s second unit in Boston’s campaign to come. The Oregon alum’s game vs. New York on Monday night included 21 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals, highlighting his ability to contribute on both ends of the floor for the Celtics, and helping to validate the significant investment the team made in him earlier in the week.

Boston rolls out its bench in preseason loss to the New York Knicks

Dalano Banton, despite some struggles with efficiency from deep, showed promise as a ball handler and on the defensive end.

The Boston Celtics rolled out their bench players in a preseason loss to the New York Knicks on Monday night, and several Boston players made strong impressions in their preseason play for the team. Payton Pritchard in particular stood out with his scoring and playmaking, scoring 15 points, grabbing 3 rebounds, and dished out 1 assist.

Dalano Banton, despite some struggles with efficiency from deep, showed promise as a ball handler and on the defensive end. Lamar Stevens played with intensity, contributing 11 points and 8 boards, though he needs to improve his 3-point shooting. Neemias Queta, a Portuguese player on a two way deal, made his debut, showcasing his size and rebounding ability, and tendency to foul too much.

Boston’s Dalano Banton relished his preseason opportunity vs the New York Knicks

It may have only been a preseason game, but Dalano Banton’s 20-point game for the Boston Celtics in their 114-107 exhibition loss to the New York Knicks was something of a statement game for the new Boston wing.

It may have only been a preseason game, but Dalano Banton‘s 20-point game for the Boston Celtics in their 114-107 exhibition loss to the New York Knicks was something of a statement game for the new Boston wing. Speaking after the game via CLNS Media, Banton said that his play for the Celtics “definitely felt good for all of us down the whole line of the team.”

“The guys who’ve been here, they had a long run into the playoffs last year, and … (have) been here early working throughout the whole offseason,” he added. “It’s good for that second unit and the guys who never got in yesterday in last night’s game (vs. the Philadelphia 76ers).”

“It’s good for all of us to get that confidence up going into the season,” shared Banton.

The Toronto native did not appear to lack confidence at all for his part, having shot a solid 8-of-19 from the field and was perhaps a bit too confident from beyond the arc after hitting just 1 of 5 attempts.

While there are elements to his game he still needs to clean up to earn a regular role with the team, Banton looked like a considerably more complete player Monday night than he did in Boston’s 2023 Las Vegas Summer League earlier in the offseason.

Celtics’ bench can’t quite beat the Knicks’ starters, lose 114-107

Recently-extended guard Payton Pritchard led the Celtics with 21 points and 5 assists, followed closely by backup floor general Dalano Banton with 20 points.

The New York Knicks pulled out a 114-107 preseason win vs. the Boston Celtics with the Knicks playing their usual starting lineup for much of the first half against Boston’s reserves, with Boston’s starters from Sunday’s win over the Philadelphia 76ers taking the night off from exhibition play.

Recently-extended guard Payton Pritchard led the Celtics with 21 points and 5 assists, followed closely by backup floor general Dalano Banton with 20 points, and reserve forward Oshae Brissett with 10 points and 5 rebounds. Former Knick wing Svi Mykhailiuk added 15 points off the bench, bolstered by 11 points and 8 boards from forward Lamar Stevens.

Despite the victory, the Knicks’ bench struggled in rebounding, allowing the Celtics to gain a significant advantage on the boards, particularly on the offensive glass, with Boston’s usual bench players looking ready for the role they will have on a team with designs on contention.

The Celtics next play against the Philadelphia 76ers on the road this coming Wednesday in a potential revenge match for Sunday’s Celtics win.
