Week 5 NFL power rankings roundup: Cowboys slowly clinb ranks after 3-straight wins

A roundup of the power rankings for Week 4. After a tumultuous drop following the season opener, things are looking up.| From @KDDrummondNFL

Not everyone is as invested in the Dallas Cowboys as contenders in 2022, but there are certainly more people who believe they’re competitive than there used to be. Tuesday is power rankings day around the NFL and when the dust settled following the Week 4 games, many outlets had much higher opinions than they did a few weeks ago.

Not everyone is a believer though, as Dallas still hovers around the middle of the pack in some circles, despite being one of just eight teams with a winning record. The Cowboys have done so as winners of three straight, all with a backup quarterback under center. One would think that speaks to the overall ability of the club, but alas.

‘We’re gonna be fine’: Jeff Lebby confident in the offense bouncing back after TCU loss

Despite a disappointing performance in Saturday’s loss to TCU, offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby is confident the offense will bounce back.

The collapse the Oklahoma Sooners suffered on Saturday in Fort Worth happened on both sides of the ball. While the defense took its lumps, allowing 55 points, the offense didn’t help much. In fact, an opening drive fumble from Marvin Mims put the Sooners behind the eight-ball to start the game.

The passing game couldn’t get anything going as Dillon Gabriel threw high and out of the reach of his receivers far too often in the first half. The Sooners couldn’t string enough positive plays to make a dent in TCU’s lead. By the time they got their second touchdown midway through the second quarter, the Horned Frogs were already up, 34-17.

Oklahoma had 10 drives in the first half. It punted on five, lost a fumble and turned the ball over on downs once. Oklahoma had just three scoring drives and put up 17 points in the first half. That effort came against a team that allowed 34 points to Tanner Mordecai and the SMU Mustangs a week ago.

Once the Sooners fell behind, it looked as if they began to press.

“We got to shake back, and we got to play one play at a time,” offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby said after the game. “That was the stress and the strain of probably as much of anything that was frustrating there in the first half. Was that it was literally all we got to do is just go play one play at a time. Go get a score, we’ll get a stop. We’ll get in a situation where you got a chance to cut it to 10 or cut it to seven and offensively. We didn’t do it. And that’s on us.”

The offense had opportunities to make plays, but either the run play was blown up by TCU defenders or Dillon Gabriel sailed a pass that led to a punt. The entire offense struggled to make anything happen consistently.

“I think it was a lot of things,” Lebby said when asked if he could pinpoint the problem. “And you know, I don’t think I can put my finger on just one thing. Because we come out and again, you know, we did a couple of good things, but man, was it spotty. No rhythm, no flow. Not converting when we needed to not take an advantage of having really good field position. So it was a lot of us. And I say us because it’s again, it’s gonna start and end with me. We got to play better.”

And he believes they will.

“We’re gonna be fine,” Lebby said. “You know, I think it’s a hard pill to swallow today, but our guys are, they’re a close group. They’re a tough group, and we’re gonna bounce back and be ready to go.”

With just a few days to get ready for the Red River Showdown, the Oklahoma Sooners don’t have a ton of time to correct some of the things that went wrong against TCU. In a raucous environment on Saturday, Dillon Gabriel and the Sooners will have to be more in sync than they were on Saturday in Fort Worth to come away with the win.

Everything Brent Venables had to say following Oklahoma’s loss to TCU

What did Brent Venables have to say after the Oklahoma Sooners’ loss to the TCU Horned Frogs on Saturday.

What can a head coach say after a game like yesterday but “we’re bad.” Now Venables went on to say, “but we’re not that bad,” however the game didn’t provide much to the contrary on Saturday against TCU.

On both sides of the ball, from start to finish, there wasn’t much to write home about for the Oklahoma Sooners in their 55-24 loss to the TCU Horned Frogs. Head coach Brent Venables couldn’t hide his disappointment in the Sooners in his postgame press conference.

Let’s take a look at what he had to say.

Down and out: Oklahoma drops out of USA TODAY Sports Coaches poll after TCU loss

The Oklahoma Sooners fell out of the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll after their 55-24 loss to the TCU Horned Frogs. How do Big 12 teams rank?

Not all that surprising, but the Oklahoma Sooners have dropped completely out of the USA TODAY Coaches Poll after their 55-24 loss to the TCU Horned Frogs.

TCU dominated the Sooners to improve to 4-0 on the season and 1-0 in the Big 12, making a statement with their 55-point outburst. The score could have been worse had Sonny Dykes kept his foot on the gas, but as injuries started to pile up, both teams were eager to just finish the game.

Oklahoma received 19 votes to rank seventh in the Big 12 among vote-getters.

The only change among the top seven was Alabama taking over the No. 1 spot as Georgia struggled with unranked Missouri. It seems these two teams will jockey for No. 1 all season long until they potentially meet up in the SEC title game.

A look at the full USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports:

No. 16 Oklahoma Sooners at TCU Horned Frogs: Sooners Wire staff predictions

Sooners Wire staff predictions for the Oklahoma Sooners’ Week 5 road trip vs. the TCU Horned Frogs

On the first full weekend of Big 12 action in 2022, the Oklahoma Sooners (3-1, 0-1 Big 12) travel to Fort Worth to take on the TCU Horned Frogs (3-0, 0-0) for an 11 a.m. kickoff on ABC.

Every game is important, but this one took on a whole new tenor after Oklahoma’s loss to Kansas State a week ago.

The Sooners can’t afford any other slips in Big 12 play if they hope to stay in the conference title and College Football Playoff race. They need to have a bounce-back performance against a TCU team that they’ve been great against since the Horned Frogs joined the Big 12.

Oklahoma is 17-5 all time against TCU and 10-1 in Big 12 play. The Sooners have won five of the last six matchups by 18 or more points, most recently a 52-31 win over the Frogs in Norman.

Can the Sooners get their first conference win of the Brent Venables’ era over TCU? Find out what the staff here at Sooners Wire has to say about the matchup in this week’s staff predictions.

By the Numbers: No. 16 Oklahoma Sooners at TCU Horned Frogs

How do the Oklahoma Sooners and the TCU Horned Frogs stack up statistically heading into their matchup in Norman?

The Oklahoma Sooners (3-1, 0-1 Big 12) head to Fort Worth to take on the TCU Horned Frogs (3-0, 0-0) in a critical Big 12 matchup this Saturday at 11 a.m. CT

The Sooners look to rebound from a frustrating loss at the hands of Adrian Martinez and the Kansas State Wildcats. The hope is a renewed focus on the defensive details will help the Sooners bounce back against a team they’ve had little trouble with over the last decade.

The Sooners hold a 17-5 all-time record against TCU, according to Winsipedia.

Oklahoma has won eight straight against the Horned Frogs and are 10-1 since TCU joined the Big 12. The Sooners have won five of their last six games by at 18 points or more.

None of that really matters though in a new season.

This game takes on a different tenor than previous matchups. Sonny Dykes and Brent Venables bring a focus on the opposite side of the ball than their predecessors.

Both teams are still trying to figure out how good they actually are. The Horned Frogs’ biggest test thus far was their road win over SMU. Oklahoma failed to pass its biggest test to date in its loss to Kansas State.

As we get ready for Saturday, let’s take a look at the Week 5 showdown with this week’s By the Numbers.

A look back at Oklahoma vs. TCU through the years in fantastic photos

Before Saturday’s matchup, take a look back at the history of Oklahoma vs. TCU through stunning still images.

The Oklahoma Sooners look to move to 4-1 on the season and 1-1 in Big 12 play on Saturday as they get set to take on the undefeated TCU Horned Frogs. The Sooners are 17-5 all-time against TCU in the history of the matchup, according to Winsipedia.

The Sooners have won eight straight against the Horned Frogs and are 10-1 since TCU joined the Big 12. Five of the last six wins for the Sooners have come by more than 18 points, including the 2017 Big 12 championship game.

It will be a matchup featuring new head coaches for both squads. Venables got off to a strong start in 2022 before a setback vs. Kansas State. New TCU Head Coach Sonny Dykes has had to manage a quarterback competition and an injury to Chandler Morris, which thrust Max Duggan back into the starting role.

Last year’s matchup featured the first start of Caleb Williams’ career. Williams was electric, going 18 of 23 for 295 yards and four touchdowns through the air. He added 66 yards on the ground and a rushing touchdown to help the Sooners win by 21 points at home. It was a critical win coming off of an emotional Red River Showdown comeback.

It will be a different test for the Sooners this season as they look to bounce back from their disappointing loss to Kansas State. To help get you ready for Saturday, take a look back at some of the best photos from Oklahoma vs. TCU since 2012.
