Dressed for Success: Xander Schauffele at the 2022 Travelers Championship

Check out the Adidas apparel worn by Xander Schauffele at the 2022 Travelers Championship.

Xander Schauffele stayed tough down the stretch and held on to win the 2022 Travelers Championship.

Both of Schauffele’s wins on Tour this year have come with Patrick Cantlay by his side. This was Xander’s first solo win this season, as he teamed with Cantlay to win the Zurich Classic earlier this year.

Schauffele was decked out in Adidas apparel this weekend, though that’s nothing new for the six-time PGA Tour winner as he’s been an Adidas athlete for his entire career.

We’ve already taken a deep dive inside Schauffele’s Winner’s Bag but now we get to open up the champion’s closet and see how Xander Schauffele dressed for success at the 2022 Travelers Championship.

Amateur Michael Thorbjornsen shows he’s got serious game against the pros at Travelers Championship

Thorbjornsen, who finished fourth at the Travelers, gave a sneak-peek why he is believed to be a future star on Tour.

Michael Thorbjornsen gave a sneak-peek into why he is believed to be a future star on the PGA Tour.

After a birdie at the 11th hole in the final round of the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut, the 20-year-old amateur and rising junior at Stanford was alone in second place, just one stroke behind Xander Schauffele.

Thorbjornsen, who grew up 90 minutes away in Wellesley, Massachusetts, was bidding to become the first amateur to win on the PGA Tour since Phil Mickelson at the 1991 Northern Telecom Open.

He carded an eagle at the par-5 sixth hole, belting his second from 260 yards to just more than a foot, and added four birdies in a six-hole stretch to put some heat on Schauffele.

“I think I saw his name at the U.S. Open. I don’t know too many young guys. I saw a few that played in Arizona in the NCAA finals. I think just the talent coming out is going to be incredible and I think he’s one of those guys that will be up there leading the pack,” Schauffele said of Thorbjornsen after the third round.

Travelers: Prize money payouts | Schauffele stands strong for win

For Thorbjornsen, seeing his name on the leaderboard at a PGA Tour took a little getting used to.

“It’s kind of weird seeing my name up there,” he explained. “I’m not really looking for my name. I’m looking for the other guys. I’m used to looking at the PGA Tour app to see how like the best players in the world stacking up. It’s kind of cool to see my name above some of those guys.”

Schauffele will know about the former U.S. Junior Amateur winner now. At the time, Thorbjornsen wasn’t aware that he was threatening the lead.

“I figured I was around there, but I was thinking,’ Okay, well, let’s go. Let’s keep it going. Let’s try and hit some good shots,’ ” he said before making back-to-back bogeys at Nos. 12 and 13 to sidetrack his pursuit at victory. “It got a little difficult there, two holes straight into the wind, mishit two drives there. But overall it was a lot of fun.”

Thorbjornsen posted a final-round 66 and a 72-hole aggregate of 15-under 265 to finish alone in fourth place. It marked the best finish by an amateur at the Travelers Championship, erasing Jim Grant, who was T-6 in 1966, from the tournament record books. It also was the best finish in a Tour event by an amateur this season, eclipsing Chris Gotterup, who finished T-7 at the Puerto Rico Open, and the second-best finish in a Tour event by an amateur since 2000 (only Robby Shelton, who was T-3 at the 2015 Barbasol Championship as an amateur, did better).

What did Thorbjornsen think of his hero’s welcome as he and his caddie, high school classmate Drew Cullen, walked up to the 18th green on Sunday?

“It’s better than like how I dreamt about it,” he said. “It’s so loud. It was very welcoming. I can’t wait to come back next year and the following years.”

Thorbjornsen had run out of steam on the back nine Sunday but gave every indication he’ll have more chances with a little more seasoning. Next up: a flight overseas to represent the United States at the upcoming Palmer Cup. And no rest for the weary either as he’ll try to qualify for the British Open on Tuesday.

Xander Schauffele stands strong for clutch win at 2022 Travelers Championship

The win is Schauffele’s sixth on Tour and second of the season.

The Travelers Championship is known for coming down to the wire, so much so that 71 percent of the tournaments dating back to 1984 have been decided by either a playoff or a single stroke.

This year’s event at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut was just slightly different, but still featured a thrilling final-round finish. J.T. Poston took the clubhouse lead late on Sunday but it was Xander Schauffele and Sahith Theegala who duked it out for the title.

Theegala took a one-shot lead at 19 under to the 18th hole before a mishap in a fairway bunker led to a crucial double bogey to bring him back to 17 under, tied with Poston and one shot behind Schauffele who was just behind in the fairway.  The 28-year-old hit his final approach tight to the hole and converted the birdie putt for the two-shot win at 19 under thanks to a final-round 69.

The win is Schauffele’s sixth on Tour and second of the year following his win alongside Patrick Cantlay at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in April. It’s his first solo victory since the 2019 Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Michael Thorbjornsen, a rising junior at Stanford and native of Wellesley, Massachusetts, finished fourth at 15 under after a final-round 66.

Patrick Cantlay’s ‘look,’ Rory McIlroy’s big number among five takeaways from Saturday at the Travelers Championship

Schauffele bounced back nicely from his first bogey of the tournament while Cantlay played consistently all day long.

The best-buddy duo of Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay made up the final group Saturday at the Travelers Championship. The pair won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans earlier this season at TPC Louisiana and were visibly comfortable throughout the third round.

They’ll be back together Sunday, too.

Schauffele bounced back nicely from his first bogey of the tournament at No. 13 with birdies on 16 and 17 to get to 17 under while Cantlay played consistently all day long. A bogey-free, seven-birdie 63 closed the gap between him and his good pal.

They’ll have the last tee time for the final round, with Schauffele one shot better than Cantlay.

Here are five takeaways from the third round of the Travelers Championship.

Jason Kokrak DQed from Travelers Championship; Could it be an epic walkout from PGA Tour life?

If this was the last shot Kokrak hits on the PGA Tour, it could go down as an all-time walk-off.

Jason Kokrak’s final shot of the Travelers Championship was a doozy, and it led to a most unusual disqualification from the tournament.

Having belted a drive of 327 yards into the left rough at the ninth hole of TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn., his final hole of the day, the burly Kokrak had little to play for and it showed. Having opened in 3-under 67 on Thursday, he was 4 over on the day – the damage of a 5-putt leading to one of two double bogeys on his card – and would need a minor miracle to make the cut.

Still, Kokrak, who is the 33rd-ranked player in the world, was just 43 yards from the hole. His all-or-nothing shot turned out to be a giant dud, flying over the green and across a road. ShotLink measured it as having traveled “87 yards into the unknown.”

But rather than go back to the original spot and take a penalty and finish out the hole, Kokrak took whatever balls he had left, hopped in his car and went home. He was disqualified from the tournament after failing to finish the hole and record a score and failing to sign and return a scorecard.

The story of Kokrak’s walk-off wedge into the great unknown would be a strange one in and of itself – who does that? – but then there’s the potential for a bigger walk-off of epic proportions.

The 37-year-old Kokrak, who has been sponsored by Golf Saudi even before the Saudi-backed LIV Golf was a thing and played in the Saudi International in February with PGA Tour approval, has long been rumored to be a player likely to join the upstart circuit. To do so, however, would lead to an indefinite suspension from the PGA Tour, where he has won three titles and more than $20 million since joining in 2012. Earlier this year, Kokrak was one of the most forthright players when he admitted that he was in talks with LIV Golf and his goal was to make as much money as he could so he could retire at age 44 and watch his kids grow up.

LIV Golf has three spots remaining in its 48-man field scheduled for next week in Portland at Pumpkin Ridge. Could Kokrak be one of the players to be named later?

If this was the last shot Kokrak hits on the PGA Tour – and that is purely conjecture at this point – it will go down as an all-time walk off as well as quite the slap in the face to a Tour that has been pretty darn good to him – $20 million earned is none too shabby.

The Action Network’s Jason Sobel texted with fellow Tour pro William McGirt, who played in Kokrak’s group on Friday and witnessed his finale. According to Sobel’s reporting, McGirt said they were unaware the ball had gone out of bounds and pointed out that since Kokrak certainly was going to miss the cut, the decision not to finish his round was actually made as a time-saving measure to help the group behind them that already was waiting in the fairway.

As Sobel noted, “it wasn’t some walk-off from PGA Tour life.”

That is still to be determined.

Travelers Championship: 5 things we learned from Friday’s second round at TPC River Highlands

Early Friday, it appeared golf fans were going to be treated to a weekend shootout at the 2022 Travelers.

CROMWELL, Conn. — Early on Friday afternoon, it appeared golf fans were going to be treated to a weekend shootout at the 2022 Travelers Championship between Rory McIlroy, the second-ranked player in the world, and Xander Schauffele, the Olympic gold medalist from last summer.

As McIlroy stepped to the 12th tee at TPC River Highlands, he led the tournament at 13 under, having just made his sixth birdie of the day by drilling a wedge down the hill on the 166-yard par 3 to 11th hole to inside 3 feet. Schauffele had birdied it too and was at 12 under.

Then the whole tournament changed. As Schauffele waited for the fairway to clear on the par-5 13th hole, McIlroy butchered the 12th, sending this tee shot on the par 4 left, and out of bounds, before hitting his second tee ball onto the hillside on the right. His approach shot went into a back-left bunker, and he popped the ball across and through the green. His sixth shot hung up on the collar of the green, forcing him to hit a chip and then a putt for an eight that dropped him from 13 under to 9 under in one hole.

Travelers: Yardage book | PGA Tour Live on ESPN+ | Leaderboard

Earlier in the day, Patrick Cantlay, the 2021 FedEx Cup champion, shot 67 to reach 9 under, a figure that was also reached by defending champion Harris English (65), Nick Hardy (64), Cameron Davis (66) and Kevin Kisner (64).

McIlroy wound up shooting an even-par 70 that included that quadruple-bogey eight on the 12th hole and a double-bogey on the par-4 15th. He will start the weekend tied for seventh at 8 under.

Here are five things we learned Friday at the 2022 Travelers Championship.
