Josh Heupel discusses Tennessee having higher expectations in 2022

2022 SEC media days: Josh Heupel discusses Tennessee having higher expectations in 2022

The Southeastern Conference media days are taking place at the College Football Hall of Fame and The Omni Atlanta Hotel at CNN Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

The 2022 media days are taking place July 18-21 and SEC Network is televising the annual event.

Second-year Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel took part in media days Thursday.

Heupel was asked about success Tennessee experienced in 2021, and now having expectations higher this season.

“I don’t want to be anywhere where there isn’t hunger to be better,” Heupel said. “The expectations are never going to be higher outside of the building than they are inside of the building. Getting our kids to understand, not soak in the outside noise. They’re going to hear it, they’re going to see it, but it changes the way you strain, focus, go about your daily habits.

“A year ago what was being said outside of our program had nothing to do with who and what we were as a program. When I came up here for media day a year ago, to who and what we were when we opened up the season last fall, and how we competed every single week. The outside noise will have nothing to do with who we are this fall either. We have to do a great job of continuing on this journey, competing, finishing our summer workouts here next week, then having a great training camp doing it one day at a time.”

Tennessee finished the 2021 season 7-6 and appeared in the Music City Bowl.

The Vols will host Ball State at Neyland Stadium in Week 1 to kick off the 2022 campaign. Tennessee announced its season opener will be played Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. EDT. SEC Network will televise the season-opening matchup at Neyland Stadium.

“We definitely focus on the little stuff, going back in and watching film, critiquing ourselves and just seeing what we can work on. It can be big things or it can be little things. It’s definitely about improving, improving, improving.”

Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops took part in media days Wednesday.

Stoops discussed Dee Beckwith transferring from Tennessee to Kentucky.

“With Dee, he is a large athlete,” Stoops said. “He’s a big boy. He’s a guy that can confuse you at times because he can play so many different positions. That’s the nice thing. That’s what Rich (Scangarello) really liked about him and we liked about him as a staff, was we could be very multiple with him.

“If you watched the 49ers in the past, some of the creativity, different things we could use with a big guy like that, could play wideout, H-back, different things, so we’ll move him around.”

The 6-foot-5, 230-pound Beckwith appeared in five games for the Vols from 2020-21, totaling 27 rushing yards on four attempts.

In 2021, Beckwith recorded two rushing yards on one attempt against South Alabama Nov. 20.

He entered the NCAA transfer portal in January.

Kirby Smart discusses Georgia having 95 players with NIL deals

Kirby Smart discusses Georgia having 95 players on roster with NIL deals.

The Southeastern Conference media days are taking place at the College Football Hall of Fame and The Omni Atlanta Hotel at CNN Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

The 2022 media days are taking place July 18-21 and SEC Network is televising the annual event.

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart took part in media days Wednesday.

Smart discussed name, image and likeness within Georgia’s program.

“The NIL program we have in place, we have a Classic City Collective run by Matt Hibbs who does a tremendous job,” Smart said. “It’s built on being sustainable. I don’t think what’s going on in college football right now at some places is sustainable, meaning, Can you do that year in and year out and repeat that? Can you honor the commitment that some people are trying to make to kids to get them to go to their school? It’s not good for college football, what’s out there.

“What’s good is NIL is good on the basis of what NIL is based on, okay? For Dan Jackson to be a walk-on from Gainesville, Georgia, come in and get an opportunity to earn money for his education, that is good. For a young man that has a father that’s on dialysis in south Georgia and he can’t support his father unless he goes back and works or he gets NIL, that is good. We have 95 players right now with NIL deals that are on our roster. That’s incredible, the depth of that. There’s so much good there. It’s the guardrails. It’s the parameters that we need to protect our game. Not only protect our game, guys, it’s protect young men, okay? We may have had the highest-paid defensive lineman last year in NIL in Jordan Davis. We had the highest-paid tight end in Brock Bowers. Kelee Ringo I would argue is probably one of the highest-paid corners there is in NIL, so NIL can be a good thing and they can learn to manage money at a young age, but to use it as inducement to get a young man to go to your school is not good for anybody or the game. I don’t have the answer for how to guardrail that, but NIL has been good to Georgia and it’s been good to our players and it will continue to be.”
