Five-Star linebacker set to take unofficial visit to Oklahoma

2022 five-star linebacker from Cypress, Texas set for an unofficial visit to Norman

After a year hiatus, high school recruits will be able to take visits once again after it appears that the NCAA’s dead period will come to an end. Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, the dead period prevented any face-to-face contact between coaches and prospective recruits. With that coming to an end, there is no need for a Sooners Summit type deal as players will be able to visit schools once again.

A recent report showd that 2022 five-star linebacker Harold Perkins is lining up a visit to Oklahoma and Texas as well in June.

Oklahoma lands No. 1 center of the 2022 class on Tuesday

The No. 1 center in the 2022 recruiting class, Demetrius Hunter made his pledge to play football for the Oklahoma Sooners on Tuesday.

The Oklahoma Sooners can now add another commit on the offensive side of the ball. On Monday, the No. 1 center in the country Demetrius Hunter committed to play in Norman. The four-star center held offers from Arizona State, Colorado, Oklahoma State, Southern Methodist, and Texas A&M. This is Bill Bedenbaugh’s first commit of the 2022 cycle.

“They had a good season,” Hunter said. “They won, what is that, six straight Big 12 Championships? So, I like that. Coach Bedenbaugh is a good coach, I got a good relationship with him. I talk to him every day, call him every day. I also like talking to the head coach as well, coach Lincoln Riley. We talk a lot, he calls me and says he wants me up there so we got a real good relationship.” – Demetrius Hunter to 247Sports

Where ESPN ranks the Oklahoma Sooners’ 2022 recruiting class

ESPN released their updated team recruiting rankings for the 2022 cycle. Where do the Oklahoma Sooners fall this early?

The Oklahoma Sooners got off to a hot start in the 2022 recruiting cycle with the additions of Luther Burden, Talyn Shettron, and Jordan Hudson at wide receiver. Their lone defensive commit coming from Lubbock Cooper’s Kobie McKinzie. More recently they added Mater Dei’s Raleek Brown at running back and Aledo tight end, Jason Llewellyn.

According to the 247Sports composite team rankings, this puts OU at No. 7 in the country after finishing 2021 at No. 11 overall. However, other recruiting platforms have different viewpoints based on their own rankings. Rivals see Oklahoma at No. 5 overall and ESPN agrees with their team rankings as well.

According to ESPN (subscription required), the Sooners have a top-five class at this point in the cycle.

No. 5 Oklahoma Sooners

(Doug Hoke/The Oklahoman)

ESPN 300 Commits: 5

Top Offensive Commit: Talyn Shettron (No. 13)

Top Defensive Commit: Kobe McKinzie (No. 81)

Lincoln Riley may need to figure out a way to incorporate a second football into his offensive attack with the depth of playmakers he is amassing. The Sooners signed one of the best wide receiver classes in the 2021 cycle, and several more top offensive weapons are on board for 2022.

The class includes three ESPN Jr. 300 top-10 wide receivers: in-state prospect Shettron, Jordan Hudson out of Texas and Luther Burden, a fast and smooth target out of Illinois. Adding to the offensive firepower is top-three RB Raleek Brown, a sudden and speedy scatback-type who can be dangerous in space.

At this point to see the Sooners in the top five without a quarterback commit in the class or many defenders has to feel like a huge win for Lincoln Riley and company. It remains to be seen as to who the Sooners might add next. The offensive line, quarterback, and defense still have plenty of room to add top prospects.

As it currently sits, Oklahoma will have no shortage of top wide receivers for their quarterbacks to target on the football field. One shouldn’t expect a top quarterback to be targeted in the 2022 class and look at the 2023 class with Los Alamitos’ Malachi Nelson to lead the way.

2022 four-star safety commits to Texas over Oklahoma

The Oklahoma Sooners missed out on Texas product Bryan Allen as he commits to the Texas Longhorns.

The 2022 recruiting cycle is in full swing and while the Oklahoma Sooners had some momentum early, the Texas Longhorns are picking it up as of late. The latest being four-star safety of Aledo (Texas) deciding to stay home and commit to the Sooners’ biggest rivals.

Bryan Allen is the No. 6 safety of the class and No. 88 player overall. This makes the seventh commit for the Longhorns in the 2022 cycle. Oklahoma currently has six commits and could be narrowing in on another, it remains to be seen. At defensive back, OU made the recent top list for five-star prospect and No. 1 overall safety in the class, Jacoby Mathews.

All in all, the Sooners have a total of 15 offers out to the 2022 class at safety. Along with Mathews, OU has offers to Kamari Wilson of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, as well as Chace Biddle of Garland. Biddle holds the Sooners in high regard and he is the teammate of current commit Jordan Hudson. He could become a priority target for Alex Grinch if they whiff on Wilson and/or Mathews.

In the current class, the Sooners might add a safety in recent Texas A&M decommit Kendal Daniels. He was released from his letter of intent with the Aggies and Oklahoma is seen as the front-runner to land the Oklahoma target out of Beggs. That is another situation to monitor moving forward as the spring progresses. No reason to even worry at this point in time.

2022 four-star offensive tackle releases top schools

The Oklahoma Sooners joined two other teams in 2022 five-star offensive tackle Dayne Shor’s top school’s list.

One of the most important positions in all of college football is the offensive tackle. They are responsible for minimizing the impact of a defensive end, protect the quarterback, and pave the way in the run game. The emphasis in any recruiting class should be securing top talent upfront.

Oklahoma Sooners and Bill Bedenbaugh could be closing in on a top offensive tackle talent from the state of Georgia. Dayne Shor released his top schools with OU right in the thick of it. The other two should come as no surprise with the Crimson Tide and the Trojans joining the fray.

Shor would be the first offensive lineman to commit to the Sooner if it came soon. The four-star offensive tackle is ranked No. 23 overall at his position according to 247Sports composite rankings. Rivals has him rated at No. 16 at offensive tackle.

Five-star offensive guard Devon Campbell names Oklahoma among top schools

The Oklahoma Sooners were among the top schools listed for Devon Campbell. He is the top guard and five-star prospect in the 2022 cycle.

Oklahoma Sooners offer 2022 top 10 player in New Jersey

The latest 2022 recruiting class offer from the Oklahoma Sooners goes to Jayden Bellamy of Bergen Catholic. He is a three-star corner.

As the focus shifts to the 2022 recruiting cycle, the Oklahoma Sooners are going nationwide in their hunt for top athletes. The latest offer is to Bergen Catholic (Oradell, New Jersey) cornerback Jayden Bellamy. He seems to be a trendy name of late. The Sooners offered the three-star cornerback on Tuesday.

Two of the top cornerbacks from the 2020 team, Tre Norwood and Tre Brown, opted to chase their NFL dreams while Brendan “Bookie” Radley-Hiles has put his name in the transfer portal. There could be ample opportunity for Bellamy to get into the competition starting in the 2022 offseason.

Bellamy possesses the size and length coaches will love as a boundary cornerback. A two-way player, cornerback and wide receiver, Bellamy possesses the hands to create turnovers through interceptions and batted balls. He understands the routes of the players he covered and shows off his football IQ by identifying where the quarterback wants to go with the ball. The three-star cornerback also shows off the ability to close on the ball or the ball carrier. A name to watch in the coming months.

He only holds eight offers at this point, so Bellamy could be one of the hidden gems that find their way to Norman.
