See the best and wildest 2022 Preakness fashion statements

Fans arrived at Pimlico Race Course donning their Saturday best.

After a thrilling Kentucky Derby just a few weeks ago that saw one of the biggest longshot winners in the illustrious history of the race in Rich Strike, we’re on to the second leg of the triple crown with the Preakness Stakes on Saturday.

Unfortunately, there is no hopeful for the crown this year, as Rich Strike’s team chose not to compete in the 147th Preakness, which has been held at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore since 1873. Still, there is sure to be a lot of excitement both before, during and after the race.

The post time is set for 7:01 p.m. ET, and the race will be televised on NBC. But the festivities began long before then, with fans pouring into the stadium early. Like the Kentucky Derby, which is known for its extravagant fashion statements, most notably the hats, folks were creative with their race-day get-ups.

Here were some of the best we saw on Saturday.

Why Rich Strike isn’t racing in the 2022 Preakness Stakes, explained

Here’s why he’s skipping the race.

Welcome to FTW Explains, a guide to catching up on and better understanding stuff going on in the world. Watching the 2022 Preakness Stakes and wondering why Rich Strike, who won the Kentucky Derby a couple of weeks ago, isn’t in the race? We’re here to help.

If you’re here, it probably means you want an answer to that question: Why would a horse that just beat 80-1 odds to win the unlikeliest of Kentucky Derbys not race in the next jewel of the Triple Crown?

It’s a great question. And we have an answer, so let’s dive in as we get set at Pimlico:

Preakness 2022 updated odds as of Saturday morning of the race

A look at the odds the day of the race.

Just because the 2022 Preakness Stakes won’t have the Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike in the race doesn’t mean it will be any less thrilling.

There are nine horses — we ranked them by name! — who will line up at Pimlico on Saturday afternoon, including Epicenter, the favorite who had a second-place finish at the Derby. Others who raced at Churchill Downs included Happy Jack and Simplification.

So what are the most recent odds (via TVG)? Glad you asked. We’ll break them down below, compared to the morning line odds, and update them later in the day as it gets closer to post time (which will be at 7:01 PM ET):

Every 2022 Preakness horse name, ranked

Let’s rank some names!

The 2022 Preakness Stakes is nearly upon us, with nine horses getting ready to run at Pimlico on Saturday (although Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike won’t be one of them).

And if you want to throw some money down to see if you can win like anyone who bet on Rich Strike did, we’re here to help.

Well, sort of. This isn’t necessarily the soundest of betting advice. Like we’ve done with the Kentucky Derby, we’re ranking the horses by name, because that’s the most* scientific way to pick a winner.

(*least.)

So here we go: Let’s rank the Preakness contender names!
