Video: Did the PFL get the return it was looking for with Anthony Pettis?

Anthony Pettis bounced out of the PFL playoffs and is just 1-4 in two seasons with the promotion.

[autotag]Anthony Pettis[/autotag] was bounced from the PFL lightweight playoffs this past Friday.

It hasn’t been an easy road for the former UFC champion the past seven or so years. After he won the UFC’s 155-pound title, he defended it once against Gilbert Melendez. But starting with his title loss to Rafael dos Anjos in March 2015, Pettis has gone 7-12.

He left the UFC on a two-fight winning streak in 2020 to sign with the PFL and had high hopes for a $1 million championship in 2021, but lost both his regular season fights. In 2022, he looked like he might be on the path to redemption with a first-round submission of Myles Price.

He had the top playoff seed despite a submission loss to Stevie Ray in June, but had to fight him again in the playoff semifinals and dropped a decision, making him 1-4 overall in the PFL. To make matters worse, Pettis said he broke both his hands in the rematch with Ray.

So the big question is, did the promotion get what it was looking for with Pettis? That’s what we asked our “Spinning Back Clique” panel of Mike Bohn, Nolan King and Brian “Goze,” along with host “Gorgeous” George Garcia.

Check out their reaction in the video above, and don’t miss this week’s full episode below.

“Spinning Back Clique” is released each Tuesday on MMA Junkie’s YouTube channel. You can watch the full episode in the video below.

Anthony Pettis to undergo surgery on broken hands suffered in PFL playoffs loss to Stevie Ray

Even if Anthony Pettis had advanced to the 2022 PFL lightweight final, he likely wouldn’t have been able to compete.

Even if [autotag]Anthony Pettis[/autotag] had advanced to the 2022 PFL lightweight final, he likely wouldn’t have been able to compete.

Pettis, the former WEC and UFC champion, dropped a unanimous decision to Stevie Ray in the semifinals of the playoffs this past Friday for his second consecutive loss to Ray after being submitted in a June regular season fight.

Adding injury to insult was the fact that Pettis (25-14) said afterward that he broke both of his hands. On Monday, Pettis clarified that he suffered fractures to his left hand and his right thumb, which will require surgery (via Instagram).

With the loss, Pettis, 35, has dropped four of his five PFL bouts since signing with the promotion after his UFC departure in December 2020.

It’s unclear if he will return for the 2023 season.

2022 PFL Playoffs 1 results: Stevie Ray defeats Anthony Pettis again, advances to lightweight finals

Stevie Ray beat Anthony Pettis again, and now has a shot at the $1 million prize in the lightweight finals.

[autotag]Stevie Ray[/autotag] proved his regular season victory over former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis was no fluke.

In the feature bout on the main card of 2022 PFL Playoffs 1, Ray (25-10) faced Pettis (25-14) for the second-straight time following their first meeting at 2022 PFL 5. However, this bout had much higher stakes with a trip to the lightweight finals and a shot at $1 million prize.

Unlike their first meeting, there would be no submission finish, but Ray banked enough control time and submission threats on the mat to secure two rounds on the judges’ scorecards, earning three 29-28 scores in the unanimous decision victory.

Pettis found himself in serious trouble in the closing moments of the opening round. While the first few minutes of the fight saw both fighters exchanging strikes on the feet, things changed quickly when Ray secured a solid takedown. Ray transitioned to a beautiful north/south choke and put the squeeze on Pettis. Despite the pressure appearing to be tight, Pettis found his way out and managed to put together a few strikes on the feet before the round concluded.

Ray didn’t spend too much time on the feet in the second round. He once again got another takedown on Pettis and found his way to the back of the former UFC champ. Ray locked in the body triangle, a similar position to the first fight between these two, and began looking for submissions. Pettis managed to break the body triangle, but only just seconds before the round ended.

Early in the third round, Pettis let his hands and his feet go early, landing some nice strikes on his opponent. Ray attempted to clinch and bring the fight to the ground, but was unsuccessful. Pettis kept the fight on the feet and they continued to trade strikes. With about 90 seconds remaining, Ray clinched again and found his way to the back of Pettis while standing. They would separate with short time remaining. Pettis got in a few more good strikes in the closing seconds, but he needed a finish and it would not come.

The judges turned in identical scores and now Ray advances to the finals where he will face Olivier Aubin-Mercier, who defeated Alexander Martinez earlier on the main card via unanimous decision.

Results of 2022 PFL Playoffs 1 include:

  • Anthony Pettis vs. Stevie Ray – welterweight semifinal
  • Omari Akhmedov def. Josh Silveira via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) – light heavyweight semifinal
  • Olivier Aubin-Mercier def. Alexander Martinez via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-26, 30-26) – welterweight semifinal
  • Rob Wilkinson def. Delan Monte via knockout (knee) – Round 1, 1:37 – light heavyweight semifinal
  • Itso Babulaidze def. Mahmoud Sebie via TKO (punches) – Round 1, 4:30

In the main event, No. 1 lightweight seed [autotag]Anthony Pettis[/autotag] (25-13) takes on [autotag]Stevie Ray[/autotag] (24-10) in a rematch from the regular season. Ray upset Pettis in their first meeting with a second-round submmission. The fight nearly is a pick’em. Pettis is -115 at Tipico Sportsbook; the comeback on Ray is -110. At light heavyweight, No. 2 [autotag]Omari Akhmedov[/autotag] (23-7-1) meets late replacement [autotag]Josh Silveira[/autotag] (9-0). Silveira was an alternate and not in the playoffs until Antonio Carlos Jr. pulled out. Silveira is a -220 favorite, but it’s Akhmedov with a 7-4 lead in the picks from our staff members.

In the other lightweight semifinal, [autotag]Olivier Aubin-Mercier[/autotag] (15-5) is a -240 favorite against [autotag]Alexander Martinez[/autotag] (10-2) and he has a big 9-2 picks advantage.

And to open the main card, our only unanimous pick is in the other light heavyweight semifinal. [autotag]Rob Wilkinson[/autotag] (15-2) is this week’s biggest playoff favorite at -340 against [autotag]Delan Monte[/autotag] (9-2), and he’s got an 11-0 picks shutout.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Pettis (60 percent), Silveira (59 percent), Aubin-Mercier (88 percent) and Wilkinson (74 percent) are the choices.

Video: Josh Silveira thriving heading into PFL playoffs in part thanks to father

After an unbeaten run to start his MMA career, including an LFA title, Josh Silveira burst on the PFL scene this year.

After an unbeaten run to start his MMA career, including an LFA title, [autotag]Josh Silveira[/autotag] burst on the PFL scene this year.

Silveira won LFA’s middleweight title in 2021. And though he only had one regular season fight for PFL in the 2022 campaign, he made the most of it with a first-round knockout of Marthin Hamlet.

The 6 points weren’t quite enough to get him into the playoffs, but he slid into the four-man light heavyweight bracket when Antonio Carlos Jr. was scrapped. Friday, Silveira (9-0) has a big test against Omari Akhmedov (23-7-1) in New York. A win will put him in the $1 million final later this year.

Perhaps it shouldn’t be a big surprise that Silveira is finding plenty of success early in his MMA career. His father and head coach is Conan Silveira, who had a pair of fights in the UFC in 1997.

Ahead of Josh Silveira’s fight with Akhmedov, check out the preview video above.
