Celtics injury update: Robert Williams III upgraded to ‘questionable’ ahead of Game 5 vs. Milwaukee Bucks

The Texas A&M product may be able to play when the series shifts back to Boston.

The Boston Celtics could be inching closer to full strength again with the team’s most recently shared injury report noting that big man Robert Williams III has been upgraded on the report to a “questionable” status after missing Monday’s Game 4 win over the Milwaukee Bucks at Fiserv Forum with left knee soreness.

That is indeed good news given there was understandable worry regarding the soreness given that was the same knee Timelord had recently had surgery on to repair a torn meniscus close to the end of the 2021-22 NBA season. Celtics head coach Udoka clarified that the absence was expected to be a brief one given the discomfort Williams was feeling was a common side effect of his procedure.

Aside from the Texas A&M product, forward Sam Hauser will remain out for Game 5 at TD Garden on Wednesday night, still on the mend from what is being listed as a “right shoulder instability episode”.

Breaking down Al Horford’s career-high playoff game vs. the Milwaukee Bucks

The Florida product played his best game as a Celtic when they needed him.

Boston Celtics veteran big man Al Horford dropped 30 points in the Celtics’ big win over the Milwaukee Bucks in Game 4 of their East semis series on Monday night, Horford having the best playoff game of his career against the Bucks. The Florida product led the charge late as the Celtics managed to pull off a comeback to steal the critical win in a 116-108 victory.

Horford had 16 points in the fourth quarter en route to a 30-point playoff high for the 35-year-old. The Celtics vet said Giannis Antetokounmpo’s staredown after he dunked on him “sort of flipped a switch” for him. As the former Gator walked back up the court, he just nodded his head and said “OK” as he looked in Antetokounmpo’s direction.

“The way he was looking at me and the way he was going about things, it didn’t sit right with me,” Horford said. “And yeah, that sort of flipped a switch at that moment.”

The hosts of the CLNS Media “Garden Report” podcast weighed in on Horford’s historic night and why he was the catalyst in essentially saving the Celtics’ season, preventing them from going down 3-1.

Eddie House reacts to Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo rejecting Marcus Smart’s help up off the floor

The physical game swung Boston’s way soon after.

In the Boston Celtics’ late-game push to beat the Milwaukee Bucks on their home floor of Fiserv Forum on Monday night, Milwaukee star Giannis Antetokounmpo and Boston point guard Marcus Smart got tangled up on a play and crumpled to the ground together in a heap.

In the ensuing attempt to get up, Smart tried to be sportsmanlike to the Greek Freak despite the chippiness of the game and offered Antetokounmpo a hand up. Giannis took it initially, but when they failed to leverage one of the pair upright with limbs still tangled everywhere, the Bucks star kicked Smart in the face, causing the Flower Mound native to waive off Giannis in frustration and leave him to his own devices.

NBC Sports Boston broadcasters Brian Scalabrine and Eddie House — both former Celtics themselves — took a moment on the air to talk over that unusual exchange, sharing their thoughts on what might be going on in the mind of the two opponents.

Check out the clip embedded above to hear their thoughts.

Celtics, NBA Twitter react to Al Horford’s career night, Boston’s improbable Game 4 comeback win vs. Milwaukee

The Celtics tied the series up with Horford’s big night.

For most of the first three quarters, it looked like the Boston Celtics might want to consider calling a travel agent about a trip to Cancun in their Game 4 matchup with the Milwaukee Bucks. With the Bucks’ physical defense bothering Boston and few calls going the Celtics’ way, fouls started to pile up and force key players to sit.

But Boston — and particularly Al Horford — dug deep, with the team’s elder statesman offering up a career night to score a personal playoff high of 30 points, and came on strong in the game’s final frame to win 116-108 in spite of the rough start. The improbable come-from-behind win caught the attention of the national media and NBA fans alike, who took to Twitter to talk about the Celtics tying the East semis up at 2 games apiece.

Let’s take a look at what they had to say on Monday night.

Al Horford highlights: Veteran Boston big man helps Celtics ice Bucks in fourth with career night

Horford’s 30-point night was critical for Boston to win the game.

The Boston Celtics got a career game from veteran big man Al Horford at exactly the moment they needed it, with the University of Florida product helping the Celtics secure a critical Game 4 win over the Milwaukee Bucks to even the Eastern Conference semifinals series at 2 games each.

The win saw Horford put up a career-high 30 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and a block in 42 minutes of playing time on a red-hot 11-of-14 shooting including 5-of-7 from beyond the arc and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe. His big night came with an electric dunk on Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo that helped a big second-half push that would put the game out of reach for Milwaukee.

To see some of Horford and the Celtics’ best plays from the intensely physical win, check out the clip embedded below put together by the folks over at NBC Boston Sports.

All the best plays of the game captured in images.

Celtics injury update: Robert Williams III OUT vs. Milwaukee Bucks in Game 4 with knee soreness

It’s the same knee he had surgery on at the end of the regular season, concerningly.

The Boston Celtics shared concerning injury news regarding big man Robert Williams III shortly before the tipoff of their Game 4 matchup with the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday, with the team relating that the Texas A&M Product would not be playing after feeling soreness in his left knee.

That would be the same one he came back from a meniscal tear surgery on in the first round of the East playoffs, Williams taking the longer-term picture into account with the decision to sit in such a crucial game. Head coach Ime Udoka related that he had not felt any discomfort in Game 3, but that Timelord “had some soreness today that flared up out of nowhere” as it has a few times since the surgery.

The move to protect the Celtics center’s health is of course the right call, and teammate Grant Williams will get the start alongside Grant Williams for tonight’s game.

How will the Boston Celtics adjust ahead of Game 4 against the Milwaukee Bucks?

Can Boston avoid falling into a 1-3 series deficit?

The Boston Celtics might not be facing an elimination game in their Game 4 contest with the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday night, but for all intents and purposes, it may as well be one given the Celtics would need to win three games in a row against the Bucks and superstar forward Giannis Antetokounmpo to advance to the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

How will Boston adjust to Milwaukee’s physical defense? What unexpected tactics can they pull out of their bag in order to keep the series on an even keel as the East semis head back to TD Garden for Game 5? Can the Celtics find a spark out of All-Star forward Jayson Tatum that was simply not there in Game 3?

The host of the CLNS Media “Winning Plays” podcast Brian Robb and guest Souichi Terada of MassLive dove into these questions in the most recent episode of that podcast ahead of the Monday night contest.

Check out the clip embedded above to hear what the dup thinks is coming down the pike in terms of adjustments for the Celtics in this critical game.

The NBA has a postseason officiating problem – and it’s probably more complex than you think

Consistency and transparency will help.

Not just Celtics fans, either — or even media who cover the team or the coaching staff or front office members who look at these games with a trained eye. No matter which way you slice it, the game had major officiating problems, with the NBA’s Last Two Minute Report for the game noting a total of FIVE incorrect calls or non-calls in a critical contest that went down to the final buzzer to be decided.

And it wasn’t just this game that there were problems with.
