College Football Playoff Rankings Expansion Top 12: What Would It Be This Year?

College Football Playoff expansion. What would’ve the CFP have been this year?

How awesome would it be if the expanded College Football Playoff was this year?

The Rose Bowl decided to be part of the fun, and now it’s all systems go in the 2024 season – but we needed it now.

Don’t you want to see Alabama get a shot? Is it right that we have a TCU team in the playoff even though it couldn’t win its own conference championship? Is it okay that we have an Ohio State team that couldn’t win its own division?

After the final College Football Playoff rankings an expanded playoff would look like this, remembering that 1) the top four seeds that get a bye are conference champions, 2) six conference champs in, six top ranked teams in, everyone else, enjoy the bowls.

Here’s how it’s going to work (this is from the College Football Playoff):

1. The 12 teams will be the six conference champions ranked highest by the selection committee (no minimum ranking requirement), plus the six highest-ranked teams not included among the six highest-ranked conference champions.

2. The ranking of the teams will continue to be done by a selection committee whose size, composition, and method of selection will remain substantially unchanged.

3. The four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded one through four and each will receive a first-round bye.

4. The other eight teams will play in the first round with the higher seeds hosting the lower seeds either on campus or at other sites designated by the higher-seeded institution (No. 12 at No. 5, No. 11 at No. 6, No. 10 at No. 7 and No. 9 at No. 8.

5. The model allows for first-round games to be played on either the second or third weekend in December in a way that best accommodates the format and the participating teams, with at least 12 days between the conference championship games and the first-round games. The Management Committee would make the final determination of the calendar.

6. Subject to reaching agreement with bowls, the four quarterfinal games and two Playoff Semifinal games would be played in bowls on a rotating basis.

7. The national championship game will continue to be played at a neutral site.

8. Subject to reaching agreement with bowls, the four highest-ranked conference champions will be assigned to quarterfinals bowls on selection day in ranking order, and in consideration of current contract bowl relationships if those bowls are selected for the rotation. For example, if the Pac-12 champion were ranked #1, the Big Ten champion were ranked #3, and the Rose Bowl were a quarterfinal site, the Pac-12 champion would be assigned to the Rose Bowl and the Big Ten champion would be assigned elsewhere.

9. With the four highest-ranked champions assigned to quarterfinal games in bowls, the opponent from first-round game winners will be assigned by the selection committee based on the bracket.

10. The higher seeds would receive preferential placement in the Playoff Semifinal games.

Bowl Projections College Football Playoff Predictions: Rose Bowl Bound Utah Beats USC

Bowl Projections and College Football Playoff Picks after the latest CFP rankings and before Championship Weekend.

Bowl projections and College Football Playoff predictions before Championship Weekend and after Utah beat USC in the Pac-12 Championship. Updated on the fly.

So now what for the College Football Playoff after Utah beat USC in the Pac-12 Championship?

That changes the dynamic of a whole slew of things. Does that mean USC is out and Ohio State in? There’s no hard and fast rule for this – we’re trying to predict the thoughts and whims of a panel of judges – but the College Football Playoff committee has never put in a two-loss team, much less one that didn’t win its Power Five championship.

There are going to be four teams left with at most one loss. That might be the simple answer.

There will be more explanations in the New Year’s Six and College Football Playoff sections, but assuming what we think is about to happen will happen, the puzzle is almost set.

A few more things …

Remember, at the end of the day, ESPN wants the best matchups for its owned bowls. As always, the conference bowl ties matter … until they don’t.

Buffalo vs Akron mattered. Buffalo beat Akron 23-22 to become bowl eligible. That means it’s almost certainly in a bowl, with New Mexico State and the highest-ranked five-win team according to the Academic Progress Rate (APR) – Rice – likely filling out the 82 bowl spots. Buffalo’s win means UNLV is almost certainly out unless someone else declines a bowl invite.

What we do know is Miami University and UAB are off to the Bahamas Bowl, and because there are few fun places to go if your school is in San Diego, San Diego State and Middle Tennessee will meet in the Hawaii Bowl.

Other than that, we’re going off a combination of news, info, logic, and educated darts thrown at the target. They aren’t called bowl projections for nothing.

We’ll change things on the fly before the big final call goes up Saturday night.

Bowl Projections College Football Playoff Predictions Week 13

Bowl Projections and College Football Playoff Picks after Week 13. They’re the last bowl projections before the reveal next Sunday.

Bowl projections and College Football Playoff predictions after Week 13 of the 2022 season.

Just when this was all supposed to clear up before the big weekend of championship games, everything got more bizarre.

The College Football Playoff picture, though, actually became easier. The problem over the next week will be figuring out the bowl spots without enough teams to fill the games.

82 teams need to be eligible to play in the bowl games, and at the moment there aren’t enough with six wins. Only one of those can be against an FCS team.

Buffalo plays Akron this Friday – that should be a sixth win if all goes well. That’s one hole likely filled.

Appalachian State has six wins but two of them came against FCS teams. Without enough eligible teams, the call is that the rule gets blown off. That’s another – maybe. Flip a coin between App State and UNLV – next behind Rice in the APR rankings.

We still need a few more options.

5-6 New Mexico State might try to pick up a game to get eligible, but it already has a win over Lamar from the FCS. Army has two FCS wins, but its problem is timing. The bowls need to get going after next weekend, and the 5-6 Knights don’t play Navy until December 10th.

And then there’s APR.

For a full explanation and a ranking of all the teams according to their Academic Progress Report, check it out here.

If the bowls need 5-7 teams, APR determines the pecking order. Rice is the top APR-ranked 5-7 team, UNLV is second. If more teams are needed, Michigan State and Auburn – tied in APR behind the Owls and Rebels – would be possibilities.

This will all be updated on the fly as more news and rumors come in, so please forgive how fluid this is. For now, the bowl projections are …

Bowl Projections College Football Playoff Predictions Week 12

What are the bowl projections and the College Football Playoff calls after Week 12 of the college football season?

Bowl projections and College Football Playoff predictions after Week 12 over the 2022 season.

This just got a little more clear.

First of all, there are going to be enough bowl eligible teams – check out who’s going bowling and who won’t here – which means we won’t have to deal with APR or any other factors for five-win teams.

That doesn’t mean we can’t have more eligible teams – there’s a chance there are a few too many and another bowl is added at the last second like last year – but things have settled down.

Now it comes down to who makes the New Year’s Six games and who doesn’t.

All the College Football Playoff teams and projected New Year’s Six squads are here with the explanation, but overall and on a big picture bowl projection level, Wisconsin, Texas Tech, and Arkansas getting to six wins makes things easier, and again, we have enough teams.

After next week the bowl projections and College Football Playoff picture should be even more set, but for now …

Bowl Eligible Teams, Who’s Out, Who’s On The Bubble Going Into Week 13

Bowl Eligible Teams. Which college football teams are in, which ones are out, and who’s on the bubble and need a win?

College football bowl bubble 2022: Which teams are bowl eligible, and what does everyone else need to do to get to six wins?

Bowl Eligible Teams, Who’s On The Bubble Going Into Week 13

College football threw us a few curveballs in a fun Week 12.

Bowling Green came up with a brilliant breakthrough run after years of struggling. It’s going bowling.

Just when it seemed like Arkansas was in trouble, it came out and rocked Ole Miss to put away to get bowl eligible.

All of a sudden, Michigan State went from probably in to probably out after losing to Indiana and with Penn State up next week. All of a sudden, Wisconsin appeared to be in trouble late against Nebraska, and then it came through in the final seconds to get that sixth win before dealing with Minnesota.

The Big 12 and Pac-12 bowl bound teams are settled, and so are the American Athletic Conference and Mountain West eligibility situations.

Below is the status of every college football team the it comes their respective bowl situations. What’s every team’s remaining schedule? Who’s in with six wins, who’s out, and who’s on the bubble?

Bowl Eligible Teams, Who’s On The Bubble Going Into Week 12

And now it’s really on.

UConn is bowl eligible and Texas A&M isn’t? Duke is in and Arkansas is fighting for its bowl life?

It’s been a fun year and now the bowl picture is becoming clearer. Who’s bowl eligible – six wins, or seven if you beat two teams from the FCS – and who’s already at seven losses and done? Okay, so 5-7 teams might be eligible if there aren’t enough teams available for the slots, but there’s no reason to get into that yet.

Below is the status of every college football team the it comes their respective bowl situations. What’s every team’s remaining schedule? Who’s in, who’s out, and who’s on the bubble?

Remember, the College Football Playoff rankings are a snapshot of the moment – they don’t project.

They’re going to change, the big games are coming up, and this will all shake out. But if the expanded College Football Playoff was in place for this year with 12 teams with automatic bids for the top six conference champions, what would it potentially be?

After the third College Football Playoff rankings were released, an expanded playoff would look like this …

Top Four Projected Seeds After the Third College Football Playoff rankings
 (top four conference champions)

1. Georgia (SEC): Sugar Bowl
2. Ohio State (Big Ten): Rose Bowl
3. TCU (Big 12): Orange Bowl
4. USC (Pac-12): Cotton Bowl

At-Large Seeds

12. UCF (AAC champion) at
5. Michigan (Big Ten)

11. Penn State (Big Ten) at
6. Tennessee (SEC)

10. Utah (Pac-12) at
7. LSU (SEC)

9. Clemson (ACC Champion) at
8. Alabama (SEC)

Second Round Bracket Projection

1. Georgia (SEC): Sugar Bowl vs
8. Alabama (SEC)

2. Ohio State (Big Ten): Rose Bowl vs
7. LSU (SEC)

3. TCU (Big 12): Orange Bowl vs
6. Tennessee (SEC)

4. USC (Pac-12): Cotton Bowl
5. Michigan (Big Ten)

Top Four Teams That Would Be Left Out
Oregon (Pac-12), North Carolina (ACC), Ole Miss (SEC), Kansas State (Big 12)
