OKC Thunder 2022-23 schedule: Taking a look at the remaining March/April games

The regular season officially ends in a month. Here’s who the Thunder will play in their remaining 16 games:

The 2022-23 NBA regular season officially ends exactly a month from today as April 9 is the last day. Which means in about four week, we’ll find out whether or not the Oklahoma City Thunder (31-35) will participate in the Play-In tournament or prepare for the NBA draft lottery.

The Thunder are on the fence of either side — they are one game back from the 10th seed and 1.5 games back in the reverse standings from the sixth-best lottery odds.

The Thunder have 16 games remaining on their schedule — 10 on the road and six at home. According to Tankathon, the Thunder have the fourth-easiest remaining strength of schedule left.

The Thunder have three back-to-back’s remaining on their schedule, which means six of their final 16 games will be played on consecutive days.

This is important to point out because Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault alluded to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander sitting out half of back-to-back’s for the remainder of the season to deal with an abdominal strain he is currently playing through — which means that Gilgeous-Alexander will likely miss three additional games at the minimum.

Let’s take a look at the final 16 games of their schedule as the Thunder fight to keep their playoff hopes alive in a crowded Western Conference.

Post-trade deadline 2022-23 Oklahoma City Thunder roster

Let’s take a look at how the Thunder roster shapes up following the trade deadline.

The Oklahoma City Thunder roster went through some changes following Thursday’s NBA trade deadline.

The Thunder made a pair of moves that saw them ship Mike Muscala to the Boston Celtics and Darius Bazley to the Phoenix Suns.

In exchange, the Thunder received Dario Saric, Justin Jackson and three second-round picks.

Following the trade deadline, the Thunder roster sits at 17 players — 15 full-time and two two-way — although it’s been reported they will likely waive Jackson, opening up a roster spot.

Due to this, Jackson will be excluded from this exercise. When/if the Thunder waive Jackson, that will put the roster to 16 players.

Let’s take a look at the Thunder’s entire roster with 28 games remaining in the regular season.

Bleacher Report predicts the OKC Thunder will finish with 18 wins in 2022-23 season

The 18-64 mark is the 2nd worst among all 30 prediction.

The NBA released the 2022-23 regular season schedules last week for all 30 teams. The drop is usually accompanied by record predictions by several outlets. That was the case with Bleacher Report and writer Andy Bailey, who published a record prediction for every team in the league.

The Thunder, whose over/under is 24.5 wins, are predicted to finish with an 18-64 record, which is worse than the 24-58 finish the team had last season.

“The prediction that the Oklahoma City Thunder will fall seven wins shy of their over isn’t necessarily a vote of no confidence in the core. It’s more about optimism for others in the West and a hunch that OKC is still a year or two away from consistently competitive basketball.

On long-term talent alone, this team has one of the most interesting rosters in the league.

With Josh Giddey, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Aleksej Pokusevski and Chet Holmgren, the Thunder can deploy lineups with plus passers at four of the five positions.

Holmgren and Luguentz Dort will have plenty of possessions in which they make scoring difficult for the opposition, too.

The key to hitting that over-under as early as this season may be whether two or three of those guys join SGA as an average to above-average shooter.”

Even with the Thunder entering another rebuilding season and being extremely young, finishing with just 18 wins would be a bit of a surprise — especially if the team is relatively healthy.

Nonetheless, if the Thunder finish with fewer than 20 wins this season, it’s safe to bet they’ll have top-three lottery odds to land the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA draft and subsequently acquire generational prospect Victor Wembanyama to add to their already stellar young core.

Only the San Antonio Spurs have a worse projected record in the league, 16-66.

OKC Thunder projected to have hardest schedule for 2022-23 NBA season

This is certainly music to the ears for those who are rooting to tank.

If the Oklahoma City Thunder are to obtain the first pick in the 2023 NBA draft to acquire Victor Wembanyama, the strength of schedule will play a huge role.

According to league analyst Ed Kupfer’s model, the Thunder have the hardest schedule in the NBA for the 2022-23 season. The model takes into account opponent strength for every team besides the Brooklyn Nets, days rest for the team and opponent and if it’s a home or away game.

The model concludes that the Thunder — by a significant margin — have the strongest schedule in the league.

Fellow draft lottery competitors San Antonio, Houston and Indiana make up the top-four for the hardest schedules in the league.

OKC Thunder 2022-23 schedule to be released in two weeks

What are some games you’re looking forward to?

The Oklahoma City Thunder — and the rest of the NBA — will have their 2022-23 regular season schedule released in two weeks, per Marc Stein.

The NBA schedule is usually released around this time in August, but it appears the league wants to give it another week in case a Kevin Durant or Donovan Mitchell trade materializes.

Last season’s schedule was released on Aug. 20.

The Thunder will play an 82-game schedule that spans October to April. With the Thunder adding No. 2 pick Chet Holmgren, the odds of the team playing a game on ESPN or TNT for the first time since the 2020 NBA playoffs increases.
