Celtics Lab 137: Digging into the 2022-23 NBA schedule for the Boston Celtics with Max Lederman

Join your Max Lederman and your usual hosts to get your bearings on how the next Celtics season will play out in this episode of the Lab.

After plenty of buildup complete with leaks about the more important games of the season in advance of the big day, the 2022-23 NBA schedule finally dropped Wednesday afternoon. It immediately sparked speculation, projections and analysis of what the lay of the land for the Boston Celtics’ next campaign will mean for the team and its 2023 title aspirations.

When will key players get rest this season? What are the marquee games? How many back to backs will there be? Is the travel situation favorable for the team? How strong is the slate of opponents, and when are the hardest and easiest parts of the league calendar?

Most importantly of all, taking all of the above into account, where do we expect Boston to finish relative to the rest of their peers in the league’s Eastern Conference?

To answer all these questions and more, the hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast got together with NBC Sports Boston’s Max Lederman to talk all things schedule related for the 2022-23 season, as well as some catch-up for what little news there has been since the last pod.

ESPN’s ‘NBA Today’ crew reacts to Boston Celtics, other Christmas Day matchups

Boston is among the teams playing on the big holiday — did the NBA get the mix of games right?

The NBA has put together a slate of five games for its 2022 Christmas Day schedule, which includes the Boston Celtics. It appears a bunch of heavy-hitters will be on the menu along with a couple of teams who are there more for their media market than for season expectations, at least as currently constructed.

The Celtics will get a shot at an Eastern Conference semifinals rematch against the Milwaukee Bucks and their star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, leaving some fans salty it will not feature a 2022 NBA Finals rematch against the Golden State Warriors. And while the Dubs will indeed play on Christmas Day, it will be against their fellow 2022 Western Conference playoff team, the Memphis Grizzlies.

The hosts of ESPN’s “NBA Today” show talked over the slate of contests scheduled for the big holiday and shared their opinions on the matchups they’d have liked to have seen instead.

Celtics champ Eddie House to join Boston’s pre- and postgame broadcast crew

Alongside fellow 2008 NBA champ Kendrick Perkins, House will be a more permanent feature in 2022-23.

Former Boston Celtics champion and current NBA broadcaster Eddie House is officially joining the NBC Boston Sports’ pre- and postgame show cast for the 2022-23 season. The news came in a team press release on Wednesday that outlined the coverage plan for the coming campaign. It will see the 2008 title winner reunite with fellow Banner 17 alumnus Kendrick Perkins.

The duo, instrumental in the Celtics’ last title run, may well end up documenting the team’s next championship from the studio while Hall of Fame play-by-play voice Mike Gorman and fellow former champion Celtic and color man Brian Scalabrine provide broadcasting coverage at the games.

Per the Celtics’ release, 98.5 The Sports Hub, The Celtics Radio Network, and 105.7 WROR’s Sean Grande and Cedric Maxwell will again handle radio broadcast duties live for all 82 games of the coming regular season.

What are the biggest takeaways from the NBA’s 2022-23 schedule release for the Boston Celtics?

What can it tell us about the topography of the Celtics season to come?

What are the biggest takeaways from the NBA’s 2022-23 schedule release on Wednesday afternoon for the Boston Celtics? We now know not only some of the highlight game dates and opponents on opening night, Christmas, New Year’s, and Martin Luther King Days, as well as when we can expect home stands, road trips, and West Coast swings. And of course, we can plan for back to backs the Celtics will likely lean on heavily to find games to rest key players.

What can that tell us about the topography of the season to come? How might it shape how the organization plans out its season? Are there any benefits or problems baked into this schedule?

NBC Sports Boston’s Chris Forsberg, Amina Smith, and Trenni Kusnieriek recently got together to hash out the 2022-23 Celtics schedule; take a look at the clip embedded below to see what they had to say.

Celtics announce two in-season celebrations honoring Bill Russell

The Celtics will honor Bill Russell in a number of ways this season, including with a special City Edition jersey and two tribute games.

The Boston Celtics have announced two upcoming celebrations to honor the late Bill Russell they are planning to hold during the looming ’22-23 campaign. In a press release alongside the unveiling of the complete regular season schedule, the club revealed these exciting tribute games on Wednesday afternoon.

The first of the two contests will be held on opening night on October 18th at home against their Atlantic Division rival Philadelphia 76ers. Boston will release a special Bill Russell tribute City Edition jersey, the culmination of an ongoing project between the league, the Celtics, and Russell himself in recent years, per the release.

The team announced it will wear these special jerseys a total of twelve times during the upcoming season.

When can we expect the Boston Celtics to rest players on back to backs?

With 13 back-to-back-games this season, Boston will likely avail itself of at least some of them to rest key players for postseason freshness and health.

The Boston Celtics might very well have won the 2022 NBA Championship had they simply been better rested heading into the playoffs, their legs betraying them against a Golden State Warriors squad who, while older on the whole, also managed to play considerably fewer postseason games on their way to a six-game Finals victory over the Celtics.

With that in mind, Boston added depth to their bench to make them flexible and to ease the load on often-injured and older players on their roster for the 2022-23 season to come in point guard Malcolm Brogdon and veteran forward Danilo Gallinari.

Back-to-back games in particular are also a place in the schedule where players might rest and others who get less playing time might see theirs bumped up, so let’s take a look at where that might happen in the 2022-23 season now that we know when they’ll be coming.

Boston Celtics picked to win East, fall short of 2023 NBA Finals by ESPN panel

Boston is the favorite to emerge victorious from the East in the 2023 NBA Playoffs per the panel, but opinions are more divided when it comes to the Finals.

While it might seem a bit early to be thinking about the 2023 conference and NBA Finals, that doesn’t mean the NBA media agrees.

The dog days of summer have long been the time of the league calendar for media outlets to speculate, rank and project where individual players and teams will stand relative to one another in the season to come. Such is the case during this year’s summer doldrums. And with the Boston Celtics the odds-on favorites to win it all in many corners, the team figures to be at or near the top of most such assessments heading into the 2022-23 season.

Such is the case in a recent panel assessment by ESPN, who see the Celtics in the mix for the next title as well — let’s take a look at their conclusions.
