Notre Dame volleyball wins first-round match of NCAA Tournament

The Irish are moving on in the NCAA Tournament.

Notre Dame has advanced in the NCAA Tournament after defeating Army in four sets, 23-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-11, in the first round. This is the 12th time the Irish (15-3) have made it to the Round of 32 in their history, and they did it in their first-ever meeting with the Black Knights. They will continue their tournament stay Thursday against Oregon (14-4), which swept the Irish in the teams’ only previous meeting Oct. 20, 1985.

Among the key contributors for Notre Dame were Charley Niego with 12 kills and 11 digs, Caroline Meuth with 10 kills and five blocks, and Zoe Nunez with 30 assists, 12 digs and three of the team’s season-high 10 service aces. The Irish got a match-high eight blocks apiece from Hannah Thompson and Lauren Wenzel. Hattie Monson contributed 14 digs.

If the Irish defeat the Ducks, it will mean the seventh Sweet 16 trip in program history. They now have won four matches in a row and six of their past seven.

After Baylor cruised to victory over Houston and Gonzaga won an all-time thriller against UCLA, the men’s basketball national championship will be decided tonight in Indianapolis.

The two combined to go an absurd 58-2 before tonight’s game as Gonzaga is trying to become the first team to finish a season undefeated since Bob Knight led the Indiana Hoosiers to that accomplishment in 1975-76.

Who has the upper edge and do we have another classic awaiting us tonight after the epic battle Saturday?

March Madness reseeding: Ranking the Sweet 16 teams in the men’s NCAA Tournament based on national title ability

The 16 survivors will square off Saturday through Tuesday in the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight with a slot in the Final Four on the line.

Editor’s note: This article was originally published by USA TODAY Sports and has been republished in its entirety below.

The Sweet 16 is set.

The first two rounds of the men’s NCAA Tournament trimmed the 64 teams to 16, and there was a record number of bracket-busting upsets this year that have made the madness extra maddening this March.

Now, those survivors will square off Saturday through Tuesday in the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight with a slot in the Final Four on the line.

But which of these teams are cut out for the second weekend of March Madness? Which of them has the best chance to cut down the nets in Indianapolis? USA TODAY Sports ranks the Sweet 16 teams based on potential of winning the national championship.

The women’s March Madness first round had one of the worst traveling calls you’ll ever see

Ugh.

You’ll pardon me for sharing a video that has a fan uttering an expletive while watching, but … it’s justified. This traveling call from the opening round of the 2021 NCAA women’s tournament is just one of the worst I’ve seen.

Florida State’s Tiana England took an inbounds pass early in the eventual Oregon State 83-59 win over the Seminoles, and she rammed into the Beavers’ Sasha Goforth, who was trying to go for the steal.

Now, England doesn’t start her dribble, but she didn’t appear to take more than a step. And somehow, she was whistled for a travel.

As this viewer says, “Are you [expletive] serious?” (WARNING: Obviously, NSFW language ahead).

C’mon. That’s a foul! Not a travel!
