Cowboys agree to terms with OT Ty Nsekhe on 1-year deal

The Cowboys have brought in a veteran tackle to add depth in 2021 free agency.

The Dallas Cowboys weren’t looking to retain Cam Erving. The offensive tackle signed last offseason and lasted just one year with Dallas before moving on to the Carolina Panthers. Though the club seems set with depth behind starters Tyron Smith and La’el Collins, it is young and in spite of last year’s starts still relatively inexperienced.

Brandon Knight and Terence Steele now have an elder statesman in their rotation, after the club has agreed to a one-year deal for veteran Ty Nsekhe.

Nsekhe, 36, has been in the league since 2012 after emerging from Texas State. The Arlington Bowie alum returns home after a career that has sent him to St. Louis, then to the Arena League and then to Washington before spending the last two seasons with the Bills.

Nsekhe was a preferred target of Cowboys Wire two years ago, and now after a stint in Buffalo he will be joining Dallas after all.

He has 17 starts over his eight seasons and last year appeared in 15 games. He played just 55 offensive snaps in 2020, but averaged 373 over the previous four seasons. According to Pro Football Focus he’s only allowed one sack in 855 snaps over the last three seasons, though he has accounted for 13 penalties over that stretch.

This move does not preclude the Cowboys from finding additional tackle depth, and a potential future starter, in next month’s draft.

Bud Dupree will make bank with the Titans

Dupree’s Titans contract puts him up there with elite pass rushers.

When Bud Dupree puts pen to paper on Wednesday (the day free agents can sign their new contracts), his deal will be for a reported five-year, $82.5 million contract with $35 million guaranteed.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the terms of Dupree’s deal on Good Morning Football this morning. Details were not disclosed last night when news first broke that Dupree was heading south to Tennessee.

The $16.5 million salary puts him up there with the likes of Packers’ Za’Darius Smith and Cardinals’ Chandler Jones, according to the current contracts of edge rushers via Over the Cap. The contract places Dupree in the top 15.

After Dupree’s ACL injury, there was speculation that perhaps his market value would decline — it certainly did not.

The Titans are taking a huge gamble not only on a player coming off a season-ending injury but one who was being labeled a bust until T.J. Watt was drafted. Dupree’s career got off to a painfully slow start, and fans started to trash him.

Once Watt came on, though, so did Dupree. Dupree switched from left to right, and it had a big impact on his production. His tackles and tackles for loss went up, and his sack numbers saw a slight uptick. There’s no arguing Dupree and Watt made for a dynamic duo, but how will Dupree fare without his sidekick?

Chidobe Awuzie leaves Cowboys for 3-year deal with Bengals in free agency

Awuzie was a second-round pick in 2017 but after four seasons as a primary starter in Dallas, is moving to the AFC North.

The Dallas Cowboys are now officially in the market for a cornerback, as if they weren’t already. On the second day of the tampering window for free agency, Dallas loses their most noteworthy free agent to date, as cornerback Chidobe Awuzie has agreed to terms with the Cincinnati Bengals.

The four-year pro out of Colorado was a second-round pick in 2017, but will now head to Ohio to ply his trade. The deal is reportedly for three years.   Terms of the agreement have not been revealed, but Awuzie will likely be placed in the Cowboys compensatory pick formula at a fourth-round or fifth-round level.

Awuzie had started 42 of the 49 career games he’s played for the Cowboys. He only appeared in eight games in 2020, dealing with a hamstring injury that sat him down for the majority of the season’s first half. He also missed time later in the year when he had to be placed on the COVID-19 list. Hamstring injuries also hampered him early in his career.

The biggest issue with Awuzie not living up to his draft pedigree was ball awareness. Consistently in close proximity to receivers, Awuzie was routinely finding himself on the defending end of specatular catches. They all had a common theme, Awuzie’s back being on camera as the ball landed in the receiver’s arms.

Some lauded him for sticky coverage, but it was apparent to those looking that either through coached technique or lack of awareness, Awuzie wasn’t making plays on the ball. He finishes his four years with Dallas with four interceptions, one per season.

After he returned to the field in December he started Week 15, but spent Week 16 and Week 17 as CB4.

Dallas also stands to potentially lose slot corner Jourdan Lewis and starting safety Xavier Woods, both also unrestricted free agents. Remaining at the cornerback position are 2020 second-round pick Trevon Diggs and Anthony Brown, who signed a three-year deal to remain in Dallas last offseason. CJ Goodwin, a special teams star is also an unrestricted free agent, while Maurice Canady returns after opting out of the 2020 season.

Grading Cowboys moves on 1st day of free agency tampering

The Cowboys weren’t big players on the first day of free agency tampering, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t do a good job. Grades.

The Dallas Cowboys, as is their custom for the last several iterations, basically sat out on the opening salvos of free agency. During the day there were several big signings that made waves across the league, but none of them were moves which made much difference to the team stationed in Frisco.

The Cowboys have holes to fill on their defense, primarily in the back seven as they stand to lose three linebackers who played a fair amount of snaps and three members of the secondary who all were consistent or occasional starters.

Some of the players who signed elsewhere could have helped the Cowboys, though whether or not Dallas was ever in on them seems to be a negative. Should they have been? Are the players who were with the Cowboys but now elsewhere major losses? Here’s how we see each of the moves Dallas did, or didn’t make on Monday shake out.

Cowboys News: Moves made, which free agents make sense for Dallas

Free agency tampering began on Monday, and with it came a bunch of news for the Cowboys and the NFL. Read to see all the news for Dallas.

The NFL free agency tampering period opened on Monday and the Cowboys had a relatively quiet day before making some lower tier moves. Some familiar faces are being retained but Dallas also is letting go of longtime long snapper L.P. Ladouceur.

A final pre-free agency mock draft fixes a lot of the holes that the Cowboys may not fill during free agency. Hall of Famer Roger Staubach gave quarterback Dak Prescott some words to live by, and he spoke on them last week in his press conference. Who will the Cowboys target in free agency? Who could be a big splash signing for Dallas?  Here are the News and Notes from a busy day across the league.

Bears fans are handling the Andy Dalton rumors about as well as you’d think

You can imagine Bears fans’ reactions when they went from Russell Wilson rumors to Andy Dalton rumors.

There’s a pattern when it comes to quarterbacks and the Chicago Bears. Especially in recent history. And none of it is good or even decent. It’s just painful.

Take this offseason, which has been especially entertaining in many ways for Bears fans, as Chicago continues to search for the quarterback that’s going to lift them out of mediocrity and into the present on offense.

Over the last couple of weeks, Chicago has been mentioned on numerous occasions as a potential landing destination for Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. While there hasn’t been a formal trade request or any indication that Seattle has plans to deal him, the Bears have been throwing everything they’ve got at the Seahawks in an effort to land him.

So you can imagine Bears fans’ reactions when we go from Wilson rumors to Andy Dalton rumors. Brad Biggs reported that Dalton could be headed to Chicago, which did not go over well with the fans.

The reaction to those Dalton rumors was painful at best and brutal at worst as most Bears fans are finally reaching the breaking point when it comes to this team’s lack of affinity for quarterbacks.

Here’s what Twitter had to say — and it wasn’t pretty.

QB Andy Dalton could be headed to the Bears

According to Brad Biggs, it sounds like Andy Dalton is the next QB on the move. And he could very well end up with the Bears.

The Chicago Bears’ quarterback situation has been under the microscope all offseason. But free agency has also made it abundantly clear that the Bears are running out of options at quarterback short of a trade.

Jameis Winston and Ryan Fitzpatrick were two names that were being floated around as potential fits for Chicago this offseason. In fact, the Bears were rumored to be a suitor for Winston. But both have gone on to sign with the New Orleans Saints and Washington Football Team, respectively, which leaves Chicago running low on options.

Another name that has been rumored as an option for the Bears is Andy Dalton, who was someone that Chicago was considering last offseason. According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, it sounds like Dalton is on the move next. And he could very well end up with the Bears.

Bringing in Dalton doesn’t make a whole lot of sense considering the Bears already have a bridge quarterback in Nick Foles, who they shelled out a fourth-round pick for last offseason.

It makes even less sense considering general manager Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy are banking on the success of this team in 2021 — which starts at quarterback — in order to save their jobs.

But the Bears are still very much in the Russell Wilson sweepstakes, although that depends on whether or not the Seattle Seahawks are going to deal Wilson.

Corey Davis and New York Jets agree to terms

What does this do for his fantasy football value?

The salary cap and other needs made it clear as day the Tennessee Titans were out of the running to re-sign wide receiver Corey Davis, who agreed to a three-year, $37.5 million contract with the New York Jets, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Titans declined Davis’ fifth-year option prior to his 2020 breakthrough season, and while it may seem like it came back to bite them, the team wouldn’t have had the money to cover his $15-plus million option and do what else it needed to accomplish with the roster.

In New York, Davis joins slot receiver Jamison Crowder and 2020 second-round pick Denzel Mims to round out the presumed top targets at the position. All three receivers bring different attributes and nicely complement each other.

The mystery is what happens at quarterback. New York currently has Sam Darnold entering his fourth year on a favorable contract, and the franchise has a decision to make ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft. The Jets hold the second pick and will be faced with the opportunity to move on from Darnold in favor of BYU quarterback Zach Wilson.

While just about everyone on Earth has Wilson mocked to the Jets, don’t be so quick to jump on the bandwagon. It’s a new coaching staff, and current general manager Joe Douglas didn’t draft Darnold, but the organization also has not done enough to put the former USC star in position to succeed. That said, the allure of a more dynamic arm may be too tough to pass up, and there’s always the factor of team brass wanting their own guy. Flip a coin.

[lawrence-related id=457636]

The addition of Davis doesn’t really tip the hand too much. Regardless of which guy is starting at quarterback in 2021, he’ll need targets. Davis is coming off a career season in which he paired well with A.J. Brown and give Ryan Tannehill a reliable target.

But it warrants asking, why did it take Davis four years to figure it out? Was it finally the combination of right coaching staff, quarterback, and personnel around him? In 2021, the expectations probably can’t be much greater than what he faced as a former first-round pick.

The quarterback situation is a drop-off from Tannehill, although there’s possibly no distinguishable difference going from Darnold to a rookie. Talent alone, Wilson gets the edge, but he also is coming into the NFL from a school not exactly known for pumping out quality quarterbacks.

The Jets have a weak defense, which puts the team into pass-happy scripts. Tennessee also was porous on that side of the ball, but it wasn’t much of an issue for playcalling balance as Derrick Henry ran roughshod over the league. Whatever New York fields at running back won’t be Henry’s caliber, and the offensive line still needs some retooling.

Fantasy football outlook

Point-per-reception leagues will put a slight emphasis on Davis’ value as a possession-based receiver. He has more speed than average, but moving the chains has been his game to date. Davis has a career high of 65 receptions (twice), reaching it in only 14 games a year ago. He won’t have someone of Brown’s pedigree to help alleviate pressure, though. There’s also the factor of a new head coach and offensive coordinator — both first-timers in their respective roles.

The offense will look similar to what the 49ers have employed under Kyle Shanahan — play-action passing, bootlegs, zone-rushing scheme, and creative ways to get the ball into the hands of the playmakers.

Davis is a WR3 in PPR and closer to a flex in stand scoring, because he doesn’t have a history of finding the end zone — something unlikely to change in 2021’s New York offense. There will be a few blowup performances, where he goes for 20-plus points, but he enters a much tougher situation in terms of defensive competition in his new division. The overall numbers may approach his 2020 line of 65-994-5, but that is over 16 games and is also best-case scenario.

Don’t get overly interested in drafting Davis. If he falls to you at a fair value in the middle rounds, consider him as a role player in your bid to winning a fantasy championship.

LB Joe Thomas leaving Cowboys to go play for Texans

Former Cowboys linebacker Joe Thomas agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Texans on Monday.

The Dallas Cowboys came into the 2021 free agency period desperate for help at the linebacker position after a lackluster year for the position group and now have lost one of their players from 2020. With three reserve linebackers all set to hit the open market, it was assured that Dallas would see attrition and the first domino fell early.

After three years as a member of the team, linebacker Joe Thomas will be leaving the club. He won’t be traveling far though, joining the Houston Texans.

The South Carolina State product went undrafted in 2014 before becoming a Green Bay Packer from 2015-17. Notably, Thomas had a 70-tackle season in 2016, a career-high year for the linebacker. After those three years, Thomas signed with the Cowboys in 2018.

Thomas was mainly a special teams player during his first year with Dallas before taking a bigger role as a rotational linebacker during the last two seasons. Thomas totaled 95 total tackles in Dallas and had a forced fumble in 2019.

With the loss of Thomas, the Cowboys now only have four linebackers on their current roster: Leighton Vander-Esch, Jaylon Smith, Francis Bernard, and Luke Gifford. Now, Dallas will look to find other options at the position, whether it be through free agency or the draft.

Report: Bills won’t tender Levi Wallace contract, return still possible

Buffalo Bills and CB Levi Wallace update during 2021 NFL free agency.

The Buffalo Bills are not going to tender restricted free agent cornerback Levi Wallace a contract this week.

However, ESPN’s Field Yates reports on Monday that the two sides are still looking to sign a contract:

The lowest amount the Bills could tender Wallace a contract is $2.13 million. Since Buffalo is reportedly not planning on doing that, he’ll become an unrestricted free agent on Wednesday when the free agent market officially opens. On Monday, the legal tampering window began.

In 2020, Wallace ended up splitting playing time with Josh Norman down the stretch at the No. 2 cornerback position. Norman is also an unrestricted free agent.

Without Wallace and Norman, the Bills only have 2020 seventh-round rookie Dane Jackson as a candidate for their starting job. Wallace, 25, signed with the Bills as an undrafted rookie following the 2018 NFL Draft.

In 12 games played, Wallace had 48 tackles, including one for loss, with eight passes defended and two interception last season.

Stay tuned to Bills Wire for the latest updates on Wallace and all-things Bills related as NFL free agency opens.
