‘I definitely think it’s time for a new arena’: Oklahoma’s Porter Moser endorses idea of new arena

Oklahoma head men’s basketball coach Porter Moser said, “I definitely think it’s time for a new arena for a lot of reasons.”

The Norman Transcript’s Mindy Ragan Wood reported last week that Cleveland County commissioners are pursuing a partnership with the University of Oklahoma’s athletic department and the OU Foundation to build a sports arena and “mixed-use development” in University North Park.

It’s the resurfacing of a development project proposal that was ultimately withdrawn from council consideration in July 2018 by the OU Foundation.

With a potential new arena once again a topic of conversation, The Oklahoman’s Berry Tramel asked Oklahoma head men’s basketball coach Porter Moser today how he felt about a new arena and if he supported the idea.

“Well, just to give a broad, general statement right now and I’ll probably go into more detail later, yeah, I definitely think it’s time for a new arena for a lot of reasons. And definitely been talking, you know, since I was hired with Joe [Castiglione]. He’s very much in those conversations and very aggressive with those conversations of what we want and done, but definitely. Lloyd Noble is I don’t know what it…is it 50 years old? It’s 50 years old. I mean, there’s people that’s had two arenas since then. Definitely it’s a huge part of what we want and the direction we want to go,” Moser said.

In the meantime, Moser’s focus remains on attracting and selling the fan base and students to come out to the Lloyd Noble Center to support this 2021-22 Oklahoma men’s basketball team.

“I’m doing what I can control right now and that’s trying to get those students in there and people in there and put a product on the floor where we’re playing our tails off that people want to root for us. And I’m going to keep doing that to connect with the students. I love our student body. I think they’re awesome. We all know it. We definitely need a new one,” Moser said.

As Moser indicated, this will be a topic he will readdress in the future once the season concludes.

“You know, like I said, I’ll dive into that more when the season’s over where I can really see the pros and cons of everything. I just know what we need,” Moser said.

Oklahoma men’s basketball is scratching and clawing late in the regular season to position itself for an NCAA Tournament berth. In Joe Lunardi’s latest Bracketology projection, he still has the Sooners in the “last four byes” section of his bracket.

After the 80-78 loss in overtime to Texas at home earlier this week, OU is now 14-12 overall and just 4-9 in Big 12 play. Despite leading a majority of the game and then putting together a valiant late-game comeback, OU lost at Kansas, 71-69, the game before Texas after Jordan Goldwire’s jumper to tie was just short to close regulation.

“It takes a lot. I mean, these guys mentally toughness. We’re right there. You’ve got to make some plays, some winning plays at the end. We made a bunch. We were down six or seven to get it to overtime. We had a chance to win it in regulation, didn’t get it done. Same thing at Kansas. We were down and found a way to have the ball to tie it or go [ahead], didn’t make the play. It takes a lot to get to that point. These guys are preparing like crazy. I think our staff, I think we’re game planning, we’re prepping, we’re scouting. The guys are really, really locked in. Just got to get over the hump, make some plays, some really winning plays down the stretch,” Oklahoma head men’s basketball coach Porter Moser said of the Sooners’ back-to-back close losses against Kansas and Texas.

The Sooners have lost nine of their past 11 games and head to Iowa State on Saturday at 1 p.m. for a massive bubble tilt.

Oklahoma women’s basketball downs West Virginia, 88-76, improves to 16-2

Madi Williams scored 23 points, Taylor Robertson added 22 points and No. 14/19 Oklahoma topped West Virginia, 88-76, to improve to 16-2.

The Oklahoma women’s basketball team kept rolling, rallying from a halftime deficit to top West Virginia, 88-76, to improve to 16-2 overall (5-1 Big 12).

Senior Madi Williams finished with a team-high 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting and senior Taylor Robertson knocked down 5-of-10 from three-point distance to deliver 22 points.

Trailing 46-44 at halftime, OU outscored West Virginia 28-12 in the third quarter to take control. After WVU’s Esmery Martinez made a jumper to pull the Mountaineers within one point at 58-57, the Sooners closed the third on a 14-1 run to open the game up.

“What a tough game. I mean, I think obviously West Virginia is a very good basketball team. They’re very physical. I thought they pounded it inside on us. I thought they exposed us in a lot of areas and I’m really proud of our team. I thought our first quarter was pretty good and I thought that the way we came out of halftime. There were some great performances on both sides today which I think is a great game for women’s basketball,” Oklahoma head women’s basketball coach Jennie Baranczyk said.

What exactly did spearhead that big third-quarter run for the Sooners?

“I think when we move and we play really good defense, we do a pretty nice job. I mean, we’re limited right now in terms of our inside play. We were down a point guard today, so I think we took care of the ball. I think sometimes it helps you on both ends. I’d have to go back and look, but I just think our overall energy and I thought the tempo of our game was a huge key in that third quarter,” Baranczyk said.

“I think we want to get up tempo. I mean, that’s a huge part of what we do period. Now, what I would’ve liked to have seen is not just fast break in the full court. I think in terms of up tempo, I love that in the full court. I also love it a little bit more in the half court. I think we got on our heels a little bit. Credit to West Virginia for that, especially in those second and third quarters, but, offensively, yeah, we want to be able to get out. It’s fun and I think we have a lot of people that can bring the ball up the floor. We have a lot of people that can do a lot of things. We want to be able to make reads and get up and down.”

It’s the best start for Oklahoma since the 2006-07 season. OU travels to Kansas State next where it will play the Wildcats at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Oklahoma up to No. 19 in USA TODAY Sports Women’s Basketball Coaches Poll

After wins over then-No. 13 Baylor and TCU, OU jumped six spots to No. 19 in the latest USA TODAY Sports Women’s Basketball Coaches Poll.

After a week that saw Oklahoma rally from three separate double-digit deficits to topple then-No. 13 Baylor, 83-77, and collect a 100-71 triumph over TCU, the Sooners jumped up six spots to No. 19 in the latest USA TODAY Sports Women’s Basketball Coaches Poll.

It’s the highest ranking of the season for OU. Oklahoma made its debut in the Coaches Poll on Jan. 4 when the Sooners debuted at No. 25 and that’s the same ranking OU had last week before wins over Baylor and TCU.

OU also saw a program-best jump of nine spots in the AP Top 25 poll where the Sooners currently are ranked No. 14.

OU has won 12 of its past 13 games—including a 99-91 overtime victory over then-No. 17 BYU on Dec. 10—and the Sooners are enjoying their best start to a season at 15-2 (4-1 Big 12) since the 2006-07 squad began 17-1.

Oklahoma’s Skylar Vann was named the Big 12 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week after averaging 21 points per game, 6.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals in the two wins over Baylor and TCU. Vann poured in 22 points off the bench versus Baylor.

“Their on-court chemistry you can see is really starting to come because they’re putting each other in their strengths. That’s been pretty fun to see,” Oklahoma head women’s basketball coach Jennie Baranczyk said after the TCU win.

Oklahoma travels to West Virginia on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. before a second road date this week at Kansas State at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Other Big 12 teams that join the Sooners in the Coaches Poll include No. 7 Iowa State, No. 14 Texas and No. 16 Baylor. Kansas State also received one point in the receiving votes category.

The top five is No. 1 South Carolina, No. 2 Louisville, No. 3 Stanford, No. 4 North Carolina State and No. 5 Indiana.

Oklahoma men’s basketball still sits just outside the USA TODAY Sports top-25

The USA TODAY Sports Ferris Mowers Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll still has OU in the receiving votes section entering a big week.

Oklahoma has been knocking on the door of the USA TODAY Sports Ferris Mowers Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll for some time.

The Sooners are still just on the outside looking in of the latest edition with 29 points in the receiving votes section. If ranked all the way out, that would place Oklahoma No. 28 nationally.

OU resided in the receiving votes category every week throughout the month of December. This week’s 29 points represent Oklahoma’s season-high tally. Previously, the Sooners’ best total came in the Dec. 20 Ferris Mowers Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll when OU received 21 points.

A chance to impress exists for Oklahoma this week. The Sooners travel to Waco to take on defending national champion and No. 1 Baylor on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. before playing host to No. 11 Iowa State on Saturday at 5 p.m. inside the Lloyd Noble Center.

After Baylor at No. 1, the rest of the top five looks like this: No. 2 Duke, No. 3 Purdue, No. 4 Gonzaga and No. 5 UCLA.

Kansas checks in at No. 6 and is followed by No. 7 Arizona, No. 8 USC, No. 9 Auburn and No. 10 Michigan State.

Texas at No. 16 and Texas Tech at No. 25 are the other two Big 12 schools that are ranked in the Ferris Mowers Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll.

As is expected in the rugged Big 12, the month of January is littered with challenging games for the Sooners.

Following this week, OU has a trip to No. 16 Texas, home dates with No. 6 Kansas and No. 1 Baylor and a road trip to West Virginia who join the Sooners in the receiving votes section.

Oklahoma Basketball: 3 thoughts from Porter Moser after OU’s 72-48 win over Alcorn State

Umoja Gibson led Oklahoma with 17 points on five made 3-pointers and the Sooners topped Alcorn State 72-48 to head into Big 12 play 10-2.

[mm-video type=video id=01fqmyx331xnnxrw2xdg playlist_id=01eqbz7cqqgxy50qwt player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fqmyx331xnnxrw2xdg/01fqmyx331xnnxrw2xdg-bc0f8d8e0ea04fdd90e2738ac80433eb.jpg]

Oklahoma closed out 2021 with a 72-48 win over Alcorn State. Senior guard Umoja Gibson led the Sooners in scoring with his 17 points. Gibson finished 5-of-9 from 3-point range.

The win means Oklahoma enters Big 12 play at 10-2 when OU hosts Kansas State at 7 p.m. on New Year’s Day. Here were three postgame thoughts from Oklahoma head men’s basketball coach Porter Moser.

Ethan Chargois and the bench played well

The redshirt senior transferred to OU from SMU. Chargois finished with eight points and a pair of rebounds in 15 minutes of action against Alcorn State.

“I thought Ethan played really well. He’s been getting minutes. I thought Bijan, C.J., Jakob, those guys have got to continue to get better and get deeper. What I did see is when they came in, I didn’t see a big drop-off defensively. That’s what I was really [looking for]. The last couple games–not the Arkansas game–but Arlington, when we started making subs, the defense went down. It was not the case tonight. I thought the subs continued to guard well,” Moser said.

Slow start offensively, but OU figured it out

Oklahoma didn’t get off to its typical start. Against Alcorn State, the Sooners misfired on their first seven 3-point tries. Finally, Chargois broke the ice from distance at the 10:36 mark of the first half to make the score 11-4 OU.

“I’ve got to look at it to be honest with you. Sometimes with a slow start, I’m like, man, ‘We didn’t get good shots.’ I’ve got to look at the tape, but I thought we moved it. We’re looking at our stats, we started out I think 0-for-7 from three and I thought we got a ton of good shots. So, I didn’t think we started out slow in terms of what you might think slow is. Like, man, they’re stagnant. We just started out missing a bunch of shots. I was kind of pleased with how we moved the ball a lot of the times,” Moser said.

The Sooners finished 9-of-21 on 3-pointers and wound up shooting a season-best 60 percent from the floor.

Being 10-2 entering Big 12 play

By and large, Moser is happy with his team’s start to the season.

“On some aspects, I’m pleased. I’m never satisfied. Did a lot of people think we’d be where we are today? No, but I think we kind’ve felt like we could move this team along if they’re defending and now the next phase is conference and we’ve got to step it up another level,” Moser said.

The Big 12 conference is home to the defending national champion in Baylor. It also currently boasts the lowest average NET ranking of any league  at 36.5 and all of the Big 12 teams are ranked within the top 80 of the NET rankings.

“This is the best basketball league in the country bar none this year, so we’ve got to take it up another level. I’m a big proponent of letting these guys have a couple days with their families. They’ve been going through Thanksgiving. And then we come back, we’ve got to really go back to work for an unbelievable conference season in the Big 12,” Moser said.

Oklahoma receiving votes in newest Ferris Mowers Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll

After convincing wins over then-No. 10 Arkansas and UT Arlington, OU is receiving votes in the newest Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll.

Oklahoma is still on the outside looking in of the newest Ferris Mowers Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

The Sooners received 21 points in the receiving votes category. That total is up from the 13 points Oklahoma received in the Dec. 13 poll and the seven points OU received in the Dec. 6 poll.

Defending national champion Baylor is the nation’s No. 1 team for the second consecutive week. The Bears received 800 points and are 10-0 after winning at Oregon over the weekend 78-70.

Duke is ranked No. 2 and Purdue is No. 3. Gonzaga and Arizona each received 673 points and are both ranked No. 4.

The rest of the top 10 looks like this: No. 6 UCLA, No. 7 Kansas, No. 8 Iowa State, No. 9 USC and No. 10 Michigan State.

Two other Big 12 teams are ranked in the Ferris Mowers Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll. Texas is ranked No. 17 and Texas Tech just snuck into the poll at No. 25.

West Virginia is also in the receiving votes category where the Mountaineers received 23 points.

Senior guard Umoja Gibson led the Sooners with a team-high 14 points and eight rebounds in Oklahoma’s 70-50 win over UT Arlington.

Afterwards, Oklahoma head men’s basketball coach Porter Moser praised his guard’s ability to accept coaching and Gibson’s work ethic.

“Everybody respects him because of how hard he works. He puts in so much time with his shot. I mean, he’s here like literally almost every single morning getting extra shots in. What I love about Mo is I challenged him after the Butler game to do more than shooting and I challenged him pretty aggressively.

“He took it to heart. Sometimes you can coach a really good player hard and try to tell them the truth and they don’t believe it. Even if he didn’t believe it, he went out and tried to prove that he’s a better defender, better rebounder, more all-around player. Man, he has done a lot of different things. His best couple defensive games the last couple games, his best rebounding games and he’s been more of a complete player. That’s a credit to him and his character,” Moser said.

Oklahoma returns to action on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. inside the Lloyd Noble Center when the Sooners host Alcorn State.

Oklahoma bounces back, hands No. 10 Arkansas first loss inside BOK Center 88-66

Oklahoma routed No. 10 Arkansas 88-66 behind 21 points from senior guard Elijah Harkless inside the BOK Center.

Oklahoma jumped out to a 13-0 lead and raced away from No. 10 Arkansas in the game’s final 9:55 from inside the BOK Center in Tulsa after the Razorbacks had made it a one-possession game.

Senior guard Elijah Harkless paved the way for Oklahoma, scoring a team-high 21 points, including eight in the first four minutes and change. Then, after Arkansas made it a one-score game at 57-54, OU finished the game with a flurry to win going away 88-66.

The Sooners bounced back emphatically from the loss earlier in the week to Butler where OU saw a 13-point lead evaporate.

“You know, I thought it started with our defense and obviously making some shots, but, you know, executing some things we wanted to do. I think that was a big part of it. Rebounding. We have a ton of respect for how they rebound the ball and we got outrebounded the last game against Butler and really had a tough 72 hours talking about what we needed to do to beat Arkansas and it started with rebounding. I thought we set the tone. We really challenged the guards for some rebounding. Elijah had 11, Jalen had eight. Even Mo had three in the first half. We just said we needed all hands on deck to rebound against an elite rebounding team. I think the guys came out from the jump with an edge and it came into the game. Sometimes you can come out with an edge and then you don’t transform it into the game and I thought our guys did for 40 minutes,” Oklahoma head coach Porter Moser said.

Moser said he felt the 3-pointer that Harkless hit against Butler to force overtime carried over into this game against Arkansas.

“What I loved that I’m really seeing is he hit that shot to go into overtime against Butler and he had been really struggling with his shot. He works his tail off on it. He’s in the gym nonstop. I think he just got his confidence back after that shot. He hit one in overtime. He hit some tonight. I think he’s got his confidence back. Defending, rebounding, I thought he was excellent,” Moser said of Harkless’ performance against the Hogs.

Harkless has shot just 26 percent from three-point distance thus far this season but he has connected on 4-of-9 3-pointers over the Sooners’ past two games.

“That’s something that I work on a lot. You know, I just kind of didn’t have a good start to the season, but I think opportunities will catch up to me because I put in the work every single day. Just kind of falling for it right now and I hope to continue it and keep showing everybody else that I can really shoot the ball. Coaches believe in me, my teammates believe in me, so I mean it’s kind of on me to believe in myself and make it happen,” Harkless said.

It was the first time Arkansas was held below 70 points in a game this season. Oklahoma held the Razorbacks to just 34 percent field goal shooting overall and just 29 percent from three-point range as Arkansas lost for the first time in its 2021-22 campaign.

The difference in four days time on the glass was stark for OU. After being out rebounded by 13 and surrendering 15 offensive rebounds against Butler, the Sooners bounced back by winning the rebound margin against Arkansas 36-29.

“I think it’s just finishing possessions defensively. I think we did a great job of just defending Butler on the initial kind of actions and shots, the first shot, but they got a lot of second chance opportunities that helped them win that game. I think coach made a big emphasis in practice, you know, coming into this game on just finishing possessions defensively and just rebounding honestly and that’s just something that we did really well tonight,” Harkless said.

All five Oklahoma starters finished with double-figure scoring. Harkless had 21, Tanner Groves scored 16, Jordan Goldwire added 14, Umoja Gibson finished with 12 and Jalen Hill chipped in with 11.

It’s the second top-15 win already for OU. The Sooners beat then-No. 12 Florida last week 74-67.

Oklahoma has two games left before starting Big 12 play on New Year’s Day against Kansas State. Up next, OU plays host to UT Arlington on Dec. 19 at 2 p.m. and then Alcorn State at 7 p.m. on Dec. 22.
