Trevor Lawrence fires back at Louisiana sportscaster’s comment

Over the weekend, Lawrence announced his engagement to his longtime girlfriend, via his Instagram.

The LSU Tigers capped off a perfect 2019 season with a 42-25 win over defending champion Clemson in the College Football Playoff championship game back in January.

Heisman-winning quarterback Joe Burrow was phenomenal, completing 31 of 49 passes for 463 yards and five touchdowns in LSU’s championship victory.

His counterpart, Clemson sophomore Trevor Lawrence, had the worst game of his college career, completing just 18 of 37 passes for 234 yards and no touchdowns.

Burrow would go on to become the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals, while Lawrence returned to Clemson for his junior season.

Over the weekend, Lawrence announced his engagement to his longtime girlfriend, via his Instagram.

It didn’t take long for one Baton Rouge sports reporter to have some fun with Lawrence’s life-changing news, poking fun at how Burrow outperformed Lawrence in January.

Matt Trent, of WBRZ Channel 2 in Baton Rouge, signed off his Saturday evening sports segment with the announcement of Lawrence’s engagement.

This is how it went.

Lawrence responded via Twitter on Monday.

“Hahaha I love when grown men try this hard to talk about me,” Lawrence said.

He deleted the tweet shortly thereafter. So, how long until college football begins?

Vegas Odds: Texas Longhorns Match Oklahoma For National Championship Odds

According to Vegas oddsmakers, the Texas Longhorns have the ninth-best odds to win the National Championship and that matches a rival.

Less than 72 hours removed from the National Championship game that saw the Louisiana State Tigers hoist the trophy as the best team in college football. As is the case with any championship, Vegas has already put together the odds for the next championship team.

The Texas Longhorns come in with the ninth-best odds according to Sports Betting Dime at +2500. Ironically enough that is the same exact odds as their rivals the Oklahoma Sooners have. The Longhorns are looking to best the Sooners for Big 12 supremacy and also looking for their first ever College Football Playoff appearance.

The best odds belong to the team that fell in the playoff championship game, the Clemson Tigers.

Texas fan’s rooting guide to the 2020 National Championship

After over five months of CFB, Clemson will face off against LSU in the National Championship. Who should Texas fans be rooting for tonight?

After roughly five months of Saturdays that were full of college football, the big game has finally arrived. Clemson will face off against Louisiana State in New Orleans for the 2020 National Championship. Both coming into the matchup with no losses, the excitement and expectations are being compared to the hype around the 2006 Rose Bowl between Texas and USC.

Defeating Oklahoma in the semi-final, LSU did Longhorn fans a favor by knocking the Sooners out of national championship contention early in the first quarter. Winning the game 63-28, the Tigers took care of business quickly and sat back and watched to see who their opponent would be.

In the other semi-final, Ohio State gave Clemson a run for their money early, having the chance to pull away from the Tigers like LSU did to Oklahoma. However, thanks to a couple of penalties before halftime, Clemson was able to storm back a win 29-23. Having the tougher path to this game, Clemson is battle-tested and ready for whatever LSU has to offer.

The Longhorns took on LSU earlier in the year, keeping them within a touchdown in early September. Besides Alabama and Auburn, nobody played them closer than Texas did. Both Sam Ehlinger and Joe Burrow had outstanding days, throwing for 401 and 471 yards respectively.

But who should Longhorn fans be cheering for in Monday’s game? Well, with LSU on the schedule for next season, having the opportunity to get a road victory against the defending national champions would be significant for Texas. The matchup against the Tigers will be important no matter what, but having a program like Texas versus the defending national champions is must-watch television.

If you mix that in with the fact that they took care of Oklahoma in the semi-final, Longhorn fans should be rooting for LSU in tonight’s national championship. Either way, it will be a fantastic game between two of the best teams in the history of college football.

You can catch the 2020 National Championship at 7:00 p.m. CST on ESPN.

Why you should bet on Clemson to win national championship

Previewing the NCAA Championship Game with the Clemson Tigers and LSU Tigers, sports betting odds and lines, with matchup analysis, picks and tips.

The Clemson Tigers are in the CFP brackets for a fifth straight year. On Monday night at the Superdome, HC Dabo Swinney and company will take on LSU in the National Championship Game, marking Clemson’s fourth final in five years. A win on Monday would be back-to-back titles and a third championship trophy in four years. If you are thinking about betting on the Clemson Tigers to do just that, here are a few reasons backing your decision.

1. Clemson’s Defense

Some pundits have decried the old “defense wins championships” as being outdated in modern, spread, RPO college football. That statement isn’t truly outdated, but an updated version would be “defense, along with offense, wins championships.” And that seems like common sense, if not exactly some Rosetta Stone of pigskin knowledge.

Good defenses… in fact, great defenses have been quite effective over the first five years of championship bracket ball. By one reliable analytic measure, three of five titles have been won be teams rated either first or second in defense. Only in 2014, when Ohio State beat Oregon, was the winning defense not a top-10 unit. And that year sided with defense being more important: OSU’s 14th-ranked defense beat Oregon’s top-ranked offense. The Ducks’ defense? No. 38.

The teams winning titles have been better on defense than they are on offense (like Clemson this year). The 2015 Alabama Crimson Tide ranked No. 1 on defense … and No. 24 on offense. Scores of games may be higher, but there can still be plenty of tremendous and crucial defensive plays turned in 38-35 game. On defense, the Clemson Tigers are former elite recruits who have received elite college coaching. They are especially proficient in situational defense, on third downs and in the red zone. They are better at such than any team LSU has faced this season.

2. Clemson’s Game Control

Other than the win over Ohio State, Clemson can’t claim statistical game comps to LSU’s victories over Florida, Auburn, Alabama and Georgia. But then, none of those teams hold a candle to the 2019 Buckeyes, which is a team that may have won the lion’s share of the brackets if they could be played 100 times on a loop. Clemson’s “poor-man’s comps” – routs of North Carolina, Florida State, Wake Forest and Virginia (all top 60s) – were just that commanding in the area of game control.

That ability to play at their pace, control the exchange of field position, get multi-score leads and boat-race opponents stems from RB Travis Etienne. His ability to move first-down markers and find pay dirt (8.0 yards per carry, 18 touchdowns), and the ability of DC Brent Venables and his troops to force three-and-outs at the front of drives or field-goal attempts at the end of them.

3. Five-and-a-Half Points

Clemson doesn’t have to win outright for you to win your point-spread bet! The Clemson Tigers are 12-2 against the spread over their last 14 neutral-site games and 8-2 over their last 10 games as an underdog. Odds last updated at 6:00 p.m. EST.

And that last note includes the 2019 title game when Clemson beat Alabama  44-16. All hail Charles K. McNeil, inventor of the point spread.
