Biggest Key To The Illinois Fighting Illini Offense

Establish the run again. The 2018 Illinois running game worked. It came up with over 2,900 yards, averaged close to six yards per carry, and it found a groove from the start with 200 yards or more in nine of the first ten games.

That was the only time in the last eight years that the program ran for 1,900 yards or more.

The 1,874 yards Illinois ran for last season were the second-most in a season since 2011, but it was still ugly. There were four 200-yard rushing days – the Illini won three of them – with the shootout loss to Nebraska the only time the ground game averaged over five yards per pop.

The offensive line is better, but the running backs have to emerge in a hurry. Statistically, the pass protection has to be there, too, with the numbers depending a bit on who takes the quarterback gig.

Big Ten Preview Keys To Every Team: Defense

Biggest Key To The Indiana Hoosiers Offense

It was this simple for the Hoosiers, at least last year – run well, win football games. Being able to run for any relatively arbitrary number wouldn’t have mattered in losses to Ohio State and Michigan, but IU was 8-0 last season when it ran for 100 yards, and 0-5 when it didn’t.

How much does 100 rushing yards matter to the Hoosiers? November 3rd, 2012. That was the last time they won when going under the mark, beating Iowa 24-21. They’re 0-23 since then when the ground game doesn’t hit triple-digits.

For a team that finished seventh in the nation in time of possession, run well, rely on your accurate passer to move the chains, control the tempo.

Biggest Key To The Illinois Fighting Illini Defense

Stop the run. Lost a bit in the shocking win over Wisconsin was the job done all day by the Illini D, holding Jonathan Taylor and company to just 156 yards on the ground.

Illinois needed an epic comeback against Michigan State – getting gouged for 275 yards on the ground – and went 1-4 on the season when allowing 200 rushing yards ore more. Since beating Rutgers in the middle of the 2016 season, Illinois is 1-22 when giving up two bills.

Fortunately, Nebraska is the only team on the first half of the slate that has any semblance of a ground game.

Biggest Key To The Indiana Hoosiers Defense

More big plays would be nice. Helped by an offense that kept the chains moving and stayed on the field, the defense was able to do just enough to stay in most games. There’s enough experience returning, though, to start turning games around.

The pass rush was okay, but hardly anything special, especially in Big Ten play. The Hoosiers failed to generate more than one sack in five of the last nine games, and 14 of the 27 sacks overall came against Ball State, Eastern Illinois, UConn and Rutgers.

Partly because of the lack of steady pressure, the interceptions didn’t come with just seven on the season and three in the first nine games.

Illinois Fighting Illini

– The Illinois offense wasn’t exactly a smoothly run organization. The running game was okay at times, and the passing attack came through late when it had to in a few huge upsets, but for the most part, it was a struggle.

The Illini finished 112th in the nation in total offense, but it made the yards count with a not-awful 26.7 points per game. However, the O almost never had the ball – long, sustained drives were a rumor – and the attack fell flat late in the season.

There’s hope for a boost, though, with four starters back on what should be a good line, a deep group of quarterbacks to play around with, and with almost all of the key targets back.

– It’s been one of the stranger disappointments in the Lovie Smith era. He’s an elite defensive football coach who crafted some killers in the NFL, and yet he hasn’t been anything special at Illinois. It’s his D – he’s the coordinator – and it’s been great at forcing takeaways and getting into the backfield – but it’s been blasted too easily against the run and it’s been way too inconsistent overall.

Fortunately, the linebackers are great and the secondary is going to be a plus. Now the thump has to come from the interior.

Indiana Hoosiers

– The offense quietly started to work really, really well. It might not have been able to keep up enough to overcome the occasional defensive issues, and the firepower wasn’t there to do anything against the Ohio States and Michigans of the world, but at least the attack was able to keep things moving.

The running game needs to be stronger, but the passing attack was the second-best in the Big Ten. With the potential of eight starters returning – along with some parts that missed time last year – the league’s No. 3 offense should be every bit as strong under rising star QB Michael Penix.

– The defense couldn’t handle the better offenses, and it struggled too often late in the year, but it was hardly awful. It allowed 352 yards and 32 points per game, was serviceable at getting into the backfield, and it didn’t have any one glaring issue other than not being able to pick off enough passes.

The D line needs to be better at getting to the quarterback, but there’s a nice blend of bulk and experience across the front four.

Big Ten To Play Conference Only Football Schedule. 5 Things To Know

Big Ten to go with a conference-only schedule. 5 Things To Know.

The Big Ten will move to a conference-only schedule if it decides it’s able to get a college football season going.

This will go for all fall sports, but mostly it’s all about the football season in what would be a fascinating run of – likely – ten games for the season.

What are the five big things that matter, schedule-wise?

West Illinois | Iowa | Minnesota
Nebraska | Northwestern | Purdue | Wisconsin

5. It’s going to be a ten game season

This is where the fights are going to begin.

Assuming this all happens like it’s being reported, instead of being a normal 12-game regular season with a Big Ten Championship, the non-conference games will go away and the league will likely play just a ten-game season.

But here’s the problem – that means each team misses three other Big Ten teams, and the disparity is about to be a really big deal.

As it stands right now, Minnesota, Northwestern, Purdue and Wisconsin miss Ohio State, In a ten-game schedule, which one has to deal with the Buckeyes?

Iowa, Minnesota, Northwestern and Wisconsin were supposed to miss Rutgers. Which one gets dealt the relative free space card?

This also opens up another key part of this – the timing.

Wisconsin and Indiana are supposed to start the season on September 4th. Purdue and Nebraska, and Northwestern and Michigan State are supposed to play on September 5th. Does knocking off two extra games mean these are all moved to later, so the Big Ten can start things off in late September?

Doing the schedule this way might buy the conference a few more weeks to get going.

4. The big loser? The Pac-12

The Pac-12 was just about to get the big boys in their houses, and now that’s gone – at least for this year.

Michigan was going to go to Seattle to deal with Washington as it begins the Jimmy Lake era, and in one of the biggest games of the season, Ohio State was scheduled to play at Oregon on September 12th.

The ACC also loses big, too, with the Penn State game at Virginia Tech now off, and with the Syracuse-Rutgers game on September 12th done.

BYU will now have to scramble, too, with no September 26th game against Minnesota, and with no trip to Michigan State on September 12th.

But what really stinks is …

3. No Lambeau Field vs. Notre Dame

Wisconsin already lost its date with Northwestern at Wrigley Field – actually, the game is still on, but it’s instead being played in Ryan Field, Northwestern’s home stadium.

Now the Badgers don’t get to play Notre Dame in Green Bay on October 3rd.

For a Wisconsin team that was supposed to go to Michigan a week earlier and face Minnesota right after, not playing a really, really good Fighting Irish team in a game like that is a plus.

The Badgers also get to sidestep the potential landmine of Appalachian State – that as supposed to be played on September 19th.

2. Now, the College Football Playoff committee will have to go to work

With no non-conference games to work off of – considering all the high-profile games were going to shape the national perspective of the league – it’s going to be all about just how good the Big Ten teams look playing each other.

Ohio State is still the odds-on favorite to win this thing, but it has to go to Penn State and Michigan State. At the moment, it’s supposed to miss Wisconsin and Minnesota, but one of them might be on the table.

Penn State gets Ohio State at home, and it missed Wisconsin and Minnesota – for now. The one road date of note is at Michigan, but overall, the schedule looks nice.

Wisconsin has to go to Michigan, but no Notre Dame means the overall schedule makes the West there for the taking again. It will have to get by the regular season finale at Iowa.

So for the College Football Playoff world, the model probably still holds. Win the conference, do it by going unbeaten or with one loss, and you’re in the tournament.

1. And now the dominos are about to fall

Get ready for the ACC and Pac-12 to be next with a conference-only slate.

The Big 12 is set up for this – every team plays everyone else, anyway – and the SEC has been dreaming of this shot to go all SEC all the time and cut out the rest of the world.

Remember, this is just for 2020 – if we get a football season.

It’s not for forever, and things will go back to normal – if possible – for next year. But this allows the Big Ten, and the rest of the conferences, to go by their own sets of rules, protocols, and guidelines.

So for one year, if this can be done safely … LET’S GO.

It’s going to be a blast.

2020 Preseason CFN Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year

QB Justin Fields, Jr. Ohio State
Was he really worth all the hype?

The guy who was right there with Trevor Lawrence as everyone’s No. 1A or 1B top recruit of 2018 played behind Jake Fromm at Georgia in his one year, and he was just off enough in the Ohio State spring game to raise a few doubts, and …

67% passing, 41 touchdown passes, three interceptions – with two in the CFP loss to Clemson – and with 484 rushing yards and ten scores. He was banged around a bit, but he always kept coming back and he always kept producing. And now there’s absolutely no questioning how good he is as the main man for another Buckeye team good enough to at least get to the playoff.

He’s going to be everyone’s No. 1A or 1B – along with Lawrence – on everyone’s 2021 NFL Draft list.

Speaking of top recruits in the 2018 class …

2020 Preseason CFN Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year

LB Micah Parsons, Jr. Penn State
Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields – those were the two franchise quarterbacks everyone wanted.

But there was no doubt who the best linebacker recruit in the nation was.

Not every five-star super-recruit lives up to the unfair and unrealistic hype, but Parsons has been every bit as good as the expectations in his first two seasons. He finished third in the conference last season with 109 tackles to go along with five sacks, 14 tackles for loss, and doing it all while growing into a better factor in pass coverage.

This year, the 6-3, 245-pound junior will take over Chase Young’s role as the national superstar defender from the Big Ten.
