Ohio State stays at No. 2 in final regular-season Amway Coaches Poll

The Ohio State Buckeyes held on to the No. 2 spot behind the LSU Tigers in the final regular-season Amway Coaches Poll of 2019.

The Ohio State Buckeyes stayed at the No. 2 spot in the final Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports of the 2019 regular season.

The margin to No. 1 LSU increased a little this week. Last week, the Buckeyes received 17 first-place votes and trailed LSU by only 29 points. The voters were apparently more impressed with LSU’s domination of Georgia than with Ohio State’s comeback win over Wisconsin, as the Buckeyes received only 14 first-place votes this week, and trail LSU by 43 points. One of Ohio State’s first-place votes went to No. 3 Clemson, which picked up five first-place votes.

Despite the lopsided loss, Georgia only fell one spot, from No. 4 to No. 5. Oklahoma, the clear choice for No. 4 of the CFP selection committee as well, came in at fourth in the poll.

Wisconsin fell one spot, from No. 10 to No. 11, for its loss. That drop was only due to Pac 12 champion Oregon jumping all the way to No. 6. The Badgers stayed ahead of No. 12 Penn State, which bodes well for Wisconsin’s Rose Bowl dreams–especially if the selection committee does the same.

No teams fell out of the rankings this week, as Virginia managed to hold on to the No. 25 spot even after being demolished by Clemson.

The Big Ten leads the way with six ranked teams, followed by the SEC with five. The Pac 12 and American Athletic Conferences each had three ranked teams, while the ACC, Big 12, and Mountain West each had two. One Sun Belt team (No. 20 Appalachian State) and one Independent (No. 14 Notre Dame) were also ranked.

Ohio State stays at No. 2 in Amway Coaches Poll, closes gap to LSU

The Ohio State Buckeyes stayed at No. 2 in the Amway Coaches Poll this week, but the gap to No. 1 LSU is shrinking.

The Ohio State Buckeyes stayed at No. 2 in the Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports after throttling Michigan this week, but the gap to No. 1 LSU is shrinking.

LSU, for its own part, easily blew out Texas A&M, but that wasn’t enough for some voters to keep the Tigers over the Buckeyes. Last week, Ohio State trailed LSU by 51 points and only received seven first-place votes. This week, the gap between the two teams shrunk to 29 points, and the Buckeyes received 17 first-place votes.

Clemson and Georgia remained at No. 3 and 4, respectively, while Utah joined the Top 5 for the first time since the final ranking of the 2008 season. (Utah did reach the Top 5 of the AP Poll for a short time in 2015, but never was that high in the Amway Coaches’ Poll.) Alabama, who held the No. 5 spot last week, fell to No. 9 after its loss to Auburn.

The Big Ten once again leads the poll with six ranked teams, while the SEC trails with five. The Pac 12 and AAC each have three teams ranked, while the Big 12, SEC, and Mountain West each have two. One Sun Belt team and independent Notre Dame are each ranked as well.

Michigan fell a surprising seven spots, from No. 11 to No. 18, after its loss to Ohio State. Oklahoma State and Virginia Tech fell out of the poll this week, while Virginia and Air Force moved in. By my unofficial count, this is the first time that two service academies have been ranked in a major poll since 1958.

The Wisconsin Badgers, Ohio State’s opponent in the Big Ten Championship Game, will enter the game ranked at No. 10.

Ohio State again at No. 2 in Amway Coaches Poll

The Ohio State Buckeyes again came in at No. 2 in the Amway Coaches’ Poll, behind top team LSU.

The Top 5 of the Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports remained unchanged this week, with the Ohio State Buckeyes still in the No. 2 spot behind the LSU Tigers. Clemson, Georgia, and Alabama round out the Top 5.

Ohio State’s win over current No. 12 Penn State was not enough to jump the Buckeyes over LSU, though Ohio State did gain a bit of ground on the Tigers. Last week, LSU’s lead was 65 points. This week, that gap shrunk a little, down to 51 points. The Buckeyes also picked up an extra first-place, up to seven from six last week. (Also, only 63 out of 65 voters submitted ballots this week.) Based on this, it’s hard to say if a win over No. 11 Michigan next week will be enough to get Ohio State up to No. 1. Ohio State was last ranked No. 1 in the Amway Coaches Poll during Week 10 of the 2015 season. The Buckeyes did spend one week at No. 1 in the CFP selection committee rankings this year.

Penn State fell from No. 9 to No. 12 with its loss to Ohio State. The Nittany Lions are one spot behind Michigan right now, even though they beat the Wolverines back in Week 8.

In a bit of a surprise, Utah jumped Oklahoma, like due to a combination of another dominant win and Oklahoma barely squeaking out another game. The Utes come in at No. 6, with Oklahoma at No. 7. Florida, Minnesota, and Baylor round out the Top 10.

The Big Ten leads the poll with six ranked teams, followed by the SEC with five. The Big 12, Pac 12, and AAC each have three ranked teams, while the ACC has two and the Sun Belt and Mountain West each have one. The 25th team is independent Notre Dame, who came in at No. 15 this week.

SMU, Texas A&M, and San Diego State dropped out of the rankings this week, while Virginia Tech, Navy, and USC moved in to replace them.
